What to Check Before Booking a Car That Hasn’t Launched Yet

A pre-launch reservation may secure only a place in a queue. Use this checklist to verify refund rights, cancellation steps, delivery uncertainty, price changes, specifications, seller identity and total cost before paying.

Do not treat a pre-launch car reservation as a normal vehicle order. Before paying, obtain the complete reservation agreement, identify the legal seller, confirm exactly what the payment secures, and get written answers on refunds, cancellation, delivery delays, specification changes and the total price. A reservation may secure only a place in a future process—not a particular vehicle, production slot, price or delivery date.

Read the contract rather than relying on a configurator, advertisement or salesperson’s description. The following checklist is consumer guidance, not legal advice; rights depend on the transaction, vehicle, seller and jurisdiction.

What a pre-launch reservation actually means

“Booking” can describe several different transactions. You might be paying a refundable reservation fee to join a queue, placing a dealer deposit on an identified vehicle, signing a binding purchase contract, or entering a financing agreement. Those arrangements have very different consequences. The document you sign—not the label used in an advertisement or conversation—determines what you have committed to.

A reservation is often not a vehicle purchase

Rivian’s published reservation terms provide a useful example of the distinction. They describe the reservation as a deposit toward a future purchase and state that it does not lock in pricing, a firm production slot, a firm delivery date or a specific configuration. The same terms say the reservation is not a vehicle sale agreement. Another manufacturer may offer stronger or weaker commitments, so use this only as an illustration of what to look for.

Identify what you receive in return

Write down the precise benefit promised: a place in a queue, priority ordering, access to a configuration window, a right to place a later order, or simply a refundable expression of interest. If the agreement never defines the benefit, assume that the payment does not guarantee one. Ask whether your position can be transferred, whether it expires, and whether the seller may change the program before you order.

Read the agreement before sending money

Request the full terms as a downloadable or printable document before entering card details. Save the version, date, web address shown on the document and every attachment. A changing online page is not a reliable record of what you accepted.

  • Contracting party: Record the company’s complete legal name, business address, customer-service contact and any dealer license information shown. Confirm whether the money goes to the automaker, an authorized dealer or a third-party platform.
  • Vehicle description: Check the model, body style, trim, battery or engine choice, options, market and model year. If the vehicle is still being developed, note which items are expressly provisional.
  • Payment classification: Determine whether the amount is called a reservation fee, dealer deposit, order deposit, down payment or something else. The term used by a salesperson does not override the written agreement.
  • Governing terms: Look for governing law, dispute procedures, arbitration language, tax treatment and any incorporation of separate terms by hyperlink.
  • Version control: Ask how the seller will notify you of amendments and whether changes apply to existing reservations. Keep screenshots or PDFs of the terms accepted.

Is the reservation fee refundable?

Refundability comes from the applicable agreement and law. Never infer it from words such as “deposit,” “fully flexible” or “priority access.” Find the exact cancellation method, any deadline, the amount returned, deductions permitted and the expected processing time.

Questions the refund clause must answer

  • Can you cancel at any time, or only before a specified ordering or production event?
  • Must cancellation be submitted through an online account, email, written notice, telephone call or an authorized dealer?
  • What information is required to authenticate the request?
  • Is the refund the entire payment, or can taxes, card fees, administration charges or exchange costs be withheld?
  • How many business days may the seller take to process it, and how will you know the refund was accepted?
  • Does converting the reservation into an order make the payment nonrefundable?

Rivian’s example states that its reservation can be cancelled under its stated support process for a full fee refund and gives an approximate refund period. That is a company-specific promise, not a universal rule. Save the cancellation confirmation, transaction reference and bank statement until the money arrives.

Can the seller cancel?

Read the seller’s cancellation rights as carefully as your own. The agreement may allow cancellation for low demand, a discontinued model, suspected fraud, regulatory problems or inability to supply the vehicle. Check whether the seller must return the entire fee, how quickly it must do so and whether it can substitute another model instead. Rivian’s terms, for example, reserve a cancellation right while stating that the fee will be refunded.

What happens if the car is delayed?

Pre-launch schedules are forecasts unless the contract makes them firm. Treat “estimated,” “target,” “anticipated,” “expected” and “projected” as different from a guaranteed delivery date. Look for a latest date by which the seller must deliver or give you a cancellation right.

Inspect the timing language

  • Is there a stated production window or only a quarter, year or “soon”?
  • Does the date apply to factory completion, shipment to a port, arrival at a dealer or handover to you?
  • Can the seller extend the estimate repeatedly by notice, or is there a final outside date?
  • Are delays caused by parts shortages, certification, transport, software or force majeure treated differently?
  • What happens to your payment while you wait, and can you cancel without a penalty?

Do not assume that general merchandise-shipping rules automatically set a deadline for a vehicle reservation. Federal Trade Commission merchandise-order guidance discusses shipment timing and refunds, but a vehicle reservation can be governed by its own contract and motor-vehicle rules. Obtain local advice if a substantial amount is at stake or the agreement is unclear.

Ask for a delay procedure

Before paying, ask how notices will be delivered, how often status updates will be issued and whether you can move to another configuration. A useful clause identifies the event that starts the clock, the final delivery date, your cancellation method and the refund deadline. If the seller will not put those points in writing, price the reservation as money you may have to leave tied up indefinitely.

Does a reservation guarantee your price?

Often it does not. Separate four numbers: the advertised starting price, the price shown when you reserve, the price when you configure or order, and the amount due at delivery. Ask which number, if any, is contractual.

Check price-change rights

  • Can the manufacturer change the base price before you place a binding order?
  • Can taxes, destination charges, documentation fees or mandatory equipment change?
  • Are introductory discounts, credits or incentives guaranteed, and what conditions apply?
  • Does accepting a new price require your affirmative consent, or can silence be treated as acceptance?
  • If you reject a higher price, do you receive a full refund and retain your place in line?

Rivian’s reservation terms explicitly disclaim locked-in pricing. That demonstrates why a displayed price is not enough; your own agreement may differ.

What can change in the vehicle’s specifications?

A concept vehicle can be shown months before final engineering, certification and production tooling are complete. Review language allowing changes to range, battery capacity, power, charging performance, dimensions, seating, cargo space, safety equipment, software, colors and standard or optional features.

Define a material change

Ask the seller to explain which changes trigger notice, a new price or a cancellation right. A minor color revision is different from losing a promised driver-assistance function or receiving materially less range. If the contract uses broad language such as “specifications may change,” find out whether you can reject the revised vehicle without losing your payment.

Rivian’s terms say development may be incomplete and specifications may change, including after features are announced. Treat every unfinalized specification as conditional unless the agreement says otherwise. Keep the original specification sheet so you can compare the production vehicle with what was represented when you paid.

Check the advertisement and vehicle availability

An advertisement is not proof that a production vehicle exists or is available for immediate delivery. The FTC’s automobile pricing transparency guidance says a dealer should plainly disclose when an advertised vehicle is not physically on the lot. Its stated principle is: “The key is transparency: consumers must not be led to believe the car is available on the lot if the car is not.”

Distinguish a concept image from a real vehicle

Ask whether images show a computer rendering, a prototype, a pre-production vehicle or the exact trim you can buy. The FTC says a representative photo should be truly representative—matching the vehicle’s make, model, condition and other material characteristics—and a reasonable consumer should understand when the picture is illustrative rather than the exact car. A concept rendering cannot by itself promise the final equipment, appearance or performance.

Get the availability statement in writing

  • Is the vehicle physically built, in production, in transit or not yet scheduled?
  • Which country and facility will produce it?
  • Has the relevant trim been certified for sale in your market?
  • Will the dealer accept a deposit for a vehicle it cannot yet identify by vehicle identification number?

Calculate the total price, not just the reservation amount

Request a written, itemized total for the transaction you expect to complete. Include the base vehicle, mandatory equipment, destination or delivery charges, documentation fees, taxes, registration, finance charges and every optional item. Also ask what happens to the reservation payment: is it credited against the total, applied only to a specific configuration or refunded before a separate order deposit is taken?

The FTC’s pricing FAQ says an advertised price should be one any consumer can pay, apart from government-required charges, and discusses the need for clear discount terms. That guidance does not eliminate local differences or determine the price of a future factory order. Require the seller to identify any discount eligibility rules, residency restrictions, trade-in assumptions, financing conditions and expiration dates.

Verify who holds your money and which law applies

Confirm the recipient’s legal identity before paying. A payment page using a familiar logo may still belong to a dealer, marketing company or platform with different refund obligations. Match the payee on your card statement to the contracting party and use a payment method that produces a durable receipt.

Jurisdiction-specific protections

Consumer rules vary by location. Florida law, for example, contains a written-receipt requirement for certain prospective-customer dealer deposits. The receipt provisions address the amount paid, the period the dealer may hold it and conditions for refund. That statute applies to the defined Florida situation; it is not a nationwide rule and cannot establish your rights in another state or country. If the amount or wording is consequential, consult a qualified local consumer or motor-vehicle lawyer.

Use “not stated” when a contract does not answer a question. An omitted promise is not the same as a guarantee.

A step-by-step prepayment process

  1. Collect documents. Download the reservation agreement, privacy notice, pricing sheet, configuration summary and any dealer addendum.
  2. Mark every obligation. Highlight payment deadlines, nonrefundable events, arbitration, governing law, amendment clauses and seller cancellation rights.
  3. Build a one-page commitment summary. Record the fee, refund deadline, cancellation channel, delivery estimate, outside date, price status and specification-change remedy.
  4. Send written questions. Ask the seller to answer unresolved points by email or in an amended agreement. Do not rely on a phone promise.
  5. Verify identity and payment. Check the legal entity, address, authorized-dealer status and payee name. Keep the receipt and transaction reference.
  6. Set reminders. Schedule checks before any cancellation deadline, configuration lock, price change or claimed delivery date.
  7. Reconfirm before converting to an order. Request the final build sheet and total price. Compare it with the original promise and decide whether the new contract is acceptable.
  8. Document cancellation if needed. Use the specified channel, save the confirmation and monitor the refund until it posts.

Red flags that justify walking away

  • The seller will not provide the agreement before payment.
  • The payee, contracting company and advertised brand do not match and no explanation is supplied.
  • “Refundable” appears in marketing but not in the contract.
  • There is no cancellation method, outside delivery date or remedy for a delay.
  • The seller can change price and specifications while you have no refund right.
  • A discount depends on financing, trade-in or eligibility conditions that are not itemized.
  • The advertisement presents a concept image as though a finished vehicle is on the lot.
  • You are pressured to pay immediately to preserve an undefined “priority” position.

What am I actually committing to?

Answer that question in plain language before you submit payment. If you cannot state what the fee buys, when you may cancel, how much you will receive back, what price can change, what delivery delay permits and which company owes you the refund, you do not yet understand the commitment. A carefully documented reservation can be a reasonable way to express interest; an undefined payment transfers risk to you without proving that a vehicle, price or date is secured.
