After a rough, dusty drive, let the Miata cool and perform a visual check of the tires and wheels, lower body and underbody, signs of leaks or impact, and the engine air filter. Check tire pressure only when the tires are cold, using the pressure on the car’s tire-information placard. Treat this as a sensible post-drive inspection, not a substitute for Mazda’s model-year maintenance schedule or a diagnosis of hidden damage.
Why a rough, dusty road deserves a post-drive check
A dirt road does not automatically damage a Miata, but potholes, sharp edges, washboard surfaces, deep ruts and abrupt transitions can load the suspension, wheels and underbody in ways ordinary pavement does not. Mazda’s 2023 MX-5 Miata Owner’s Manual warns that the suspension and underbody can be damaged when the vehicle is driven on rough or uneven roads, or over speed bumps at excessive speed. The same warning is especially relevant to the MX-5’s low-profile tires and wheels, which have less sidewall cushioning against a sharp impact.

Dust creates a different concern. A light coating after an ordinary unpaved-road trip is usually a cleaning issue. Very dusty or sandy operation can load the engine air filter faster, and Mazda’s manuals direct owners to clean it more often and replace it if necessary. The correct response depends on how severe and recurring the use is, the car’s model year and engine, and what you actually find during the inspection.
Do this first: a safe, quick inspection sequence
- Park on a stable, level surface. Avoid stopping beneath loose rock, on a soft shoulder or where the car could roll. Set the parking brake and switch off the engine.
- Let the tires and exhaust cool. You can perform a visual walk-around sooner, but pressure readings are meaningful only with cold tires.
- Walk around the entire car in good light. A flashlight helps reveal cuts, packed mud and fresh scrapes in wheel arches and beneath the bumpers.
- Do not crawl underneath a car supported only by a jack. If you need access below the vehicle, use properly rated stands and a safe procedure, or have a qualified technician inspect it.
- Record anything new. Note a warning light, new vibration, pulling, steering change, scrape, fluid spot or unusual noise so you can describe it accurately to a shop.
Check the tires and wheels before driving again
Look for impact damage
Inspect each tire’s tread and sidewall, including the inside-facing sidewall if you can see it without putting yourself in danger. Look for cuts, punctures, exposed cords, tears, embedded stones or a bulge. A bulge or localized lump can indicate internal damage even when the tire still holds air. Also inspect the wheel rim for a fresh dent, crack, chipped edge or a section that no longer appears round.

Pay particular attention to the wheels that struck potholes or rocks. Damage may be easier to spot after the dust has been rinsed away, so clean the area gently if visibility is poor. Do not assume a tire is safe because it is not flat; a slow leak or internal belt damage can appear later.
Measure pressure when the tires are cold
Mazda’s 2025 MX-5 Owner’s Manual directs owners to inspect tire pressure monthly when the tires are cold and to maintain the pressure specified on the vehicle tire-information placard. The placard, rather than a generic internet number, is the controlling value for that particular car. It is commonly located on the driver-door area, but use the label on your vehicle.
Use a reliable gauge before the next drive, or after the tires have returned to ambient temperature. Compare all four readings with the placard and check the spare if your car is equipped with one. Do not reduce pressure based solely on a hot reading after the drive; heat raises pressure temporarily. If one tire is materially lower than the others, inspect for a puncture and have it repaired or replaced according to tire-industry practice.

Know when a tire check becomes a repair issue

Inspect the lower body and visible underbody
Look from a safe position
You do not need to dismantle anything for a useful first check. Crouch beside the car and look behind the front and rear bumpers, along the rocker panels, inside the wheel housings and toward the mufflers. Look for fresh shiny scrape marks, crushed or hanging shields, bent brackets, torn plastic, displaced trim and rocks or mud packed into gaps.
Check the ground beneath the engine, transmission area and rear axle for fresh fluid spots. A dusty road can hide a small leak until a wet mark appears on a clean surface, so compare what you see with the color and location of any previous driveway marks. Do not identify a fluid by color alone or attempt a repair based on a glance; the purpose of this check is to catch a new symptom early.
Separate a visual check from a diagnosis
A visual inspection can reveal obvious impact damage, but it cannot confirm that suspension geometry, ball joints, wheel bearings or fasteners are undamaged. Mazda’s scheduled inspection lists include chassis items such as suspension components, ball joints, wheel-bearing axial play and fasteners. If the car now pulls to one side, the steering wheel is off-center, the ride height appears different, or you hear a new knock, clunk, grinding or scraping sound, arrange a qualified inspection rather than waiting for the next routine service.

Stop driving and seek professional help for a warning light, a rapidly worsening noise, a visible leak, a damaged brake or suspension part, or any handling change that makes the car feel unstable. A tow is safer than testing a suspected structural or wheel failure on the road.

When an early inspection makes sense
Dust exposure is most important when the road was very dusty or sandy, another vehicle created a persistent cloud, or this type of driving happens repeatedly. Mazda’s 2020 MX-5 Owner’s Manual states that when the vehicle is operated in very dusty or sandy areas, the air filter should be cleaned more often and replaced if necessary. That wording calls for condition-based attention, not an automatic replacement after every unpaved trip.
How to inspect it without contaminating the intake
- Park with the engine off and allow the surrounding components to cool.
- Open the air-filter housing using the procedure in the owner’s manual for your model year and engine.
- Lift the filter carefully so loose dust does not fall into the clean side of the housing or intake.
- Examine the filter media, pleats and sealing edge. Heavy loading, a visibly blocked surface or damage to the seal justifies service.
- Clean or replace it only as the manual permits. Use a replacement matched to the exact model year and engine.
- Close and secure the housing before starting the engine. Never operate the Miata without its air filter installed.
Do not generalize a replacement interval across all Miata generations. Intake designs, engines and maintenance tables vary, and a filter that looks dusty is not automatically unusable. If you are unsure whether the element can be cleaned, ask a Mazda-qualified technician or follow the exact manual procedure rather than improvising with compressed air or household tools.

Understand Mazda’s severe-service schedule
Dusty driving and driving on rough or muddy roads are listed as severe driving conditions in Mazda’s 2026 MX-5 scheduled-maintenance guidance for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. When a listed condition applies, that guidance directs owners to follow Schedule 2. The table and interval applicable to your car depend on the vehicle year, market and maintenance configuration.

The severe-service designation is about the pattern of use, not a claim that every single outing causes damage. Keep the owner’s manual for your specific Miata available when deciding whether the car belongs on the severe schedule and which parts or intervals apply.
Clean dust, mud and road-treatment residue intelligently
Cleaning is useful when material has accumulated in the wheel housings, beneath the bumpers or around visible underbody parts. Mazda guidance cited in the 2019 MX-5 material discusses road chemicals and dust-control solvents and advises keeping drain holes clear. Removing residue helps you see new damage and prevents packed material from obscuring leaks, scrapes or fasteners.

Rinse the wheel housings and accessible underbody surfaces with a method appropriate for the car and local wastewater rules. Clear blocked drain holes gently; do not push debris deeper into a cavity. A wash is not mandatory after every ordinary dusty outing, and aggressive pressure directed at electrical connectors, seals or fragile trim can create a new problem. Clean first when buildup interferes with inspection or contains corrosive road treatment.
Model-year and market details matter
“Miata” covers multiple MX-5 generations, engines, transmissions and regional specifications. Tire pressures, filter design, access panels, maintenance intervals and severe-service tables can differ.
