Short answer: buy the Lotus Emira if your priority is a new, compact, mid-engine sports car with a Cayman-like format. Choose the Porsche Macan Electric or Taycan if you specifically want a Porsche EV now and can accept an SUV or a much larger four-door. Consider a Toyota GR Supra, BMW Z4, Mazda MX-5 or MG Cyberster only when front-engine layout, open-top driving or electric-roadster character matters more than matching the Cayman’s proportions. If you can wait, Porsche has described an all-electric sports car for the 718 segment, but it has announced no launch date.
The right replacement depends on what you are actually replacing: mid-engine balance, a low two-seat coupe, gasoline power, the Porsche badge, open-air driving, electric operation, track use, daily practicality or purchase budget. No single car reproduces all of those traits.

Why the Cayman is becoming harder to replace new
Porsche’s gasoline 718 Boxster and Cayman are being phased out. Porsche AG reported 2,789 combined Boxster and Cayman deliveries in the first half of 2026 and attributed the decline to the model series being phased out. That does not mean existing cars have disappeared: used 718 inventory can still offer the exact mid-engine coupe or roadster format, subject to local supply, condition and pricing.

For a new-car buyer, the change creates three separate choices. You can buy the closest currently available gasoline sports car, switch to a Porsche electric vehicle in a different body style, or wait for Porsche’s next 718-segment sports car. Treat those as different ownership decisions rather than as interchangeable Cayman substitutes.

Why it belongs at the top of the list
Lotus describes the Emira as a “mid-engine premium sports car,” making it the most direct new-car answer for someone who values a compact, low-slung, two-seat sports-car layout. It remains gasoline-powered, so it does not solve a requirement for zero-tailpipe-emission driving or home charging.
What the published V6 specification says
In a June 5, 2025 announcement, Lotus specified the Emira V6 with 400 hp, a six-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential as standard, and an automatic transmission as an option. Lotus quoted 0–62 mph in 4.3 seconds for that announced V6 specification. Those figures apply to the described V6 version, not automatically to every Emira trim or market configuration.
What to verify before ordering
- Confirm that the exact V6 or four-cylinder trim you want is still orderable in your country; the cited announcement describes 2026 variants and availability can change.
- Check transmission, suspension and equipment specifications on the local configurator rather than assuming every market receives the same combination.
- Compare dealer proximity, warranty terms, insurance and maintenance support with a used 718. No comparative long-term reliability or ownership-cost result has been established here.
Choose the Emira when the physical recipe matters most: mid-engine placement, two-seat sports-car proportions, gasoline response and the option of a manual gearbox. Do not choose it merely because its acceleration number resembles a Cayman; published figures are not a complete handling or ride comparison.

Porsche Macan Electric: the practical Porsche option
The Macan Electric is an SUV, not a Cayman-shaped coupe. It is the better fit when you want Porsche’s electric powertrain in a vehicle that can carry people and cargo more easily than a two-seat sports car.
Porsche USA’s live 2027 configurator lists these U.S. starting MSRPs:

Porsche lists 0–60 mph in 5.4 seconds for the base model. It also states that charging from 10% to as much as 80% can take up to 21 minutes at an appropriate high-power DC station under optimal battery and ambient conditions. “Up to” is important: charging speed varies with the station, battery temperature, state of charge and other conditions, so it is not a guaranteed stop time.

A September 2025 Porsche model-year update said 2026 Macan Electric variants were available to order, U.S. deliveries would start in spring 2026, and all-wheel-drive Macan 4, 4S and Turbo versions gained a 5,500-pound towing capacity. Those statements are dated; use the live configurator and a local dealer for current inventory, equipment and delivery timing.
Porsche Taycan: an electric grand-touring family car
The Taycan gives you a Porsche EV in sedan and wagon-style body formats, but it is substantially larger and more accommodating than a Cayman. It makes sense when high performance, four-door usability or a long-distance grand-touring role outranks compact two-seat proportions.
Porsche USA lists these 2027 U.S. starting MSRPs:

The quoted acceleration figures are launch-control claims, and every listed price excludes options and fees. The gap between a Cayman and a Taycan is therefore not just propulsion: it includes size, seating, cargo capacity and a much higher starting price.

Gasoline sports cars when the Porsche badge or mid-engine layout is optional
Toyota GR Supra
Toyota’s comparison page lists the 2026 GR Supra 3.0 from $58,300 in the United States. It is a front-engine coupe, not a mid-engine car and not an EV. That makes it a candidate for buyers who want a two-seat sports coupe and gasoline power at a lower stated entry price, while accepting a different chassis layout and brand experience. Verify model-year timing, inventory and dealer terms before treating the figure as an out-the-door budget.
BMW Z4
The same Toyota comparison lists a 2026 BMW Z4 sDrive30i from $56,100 in the United States. The Z4 is an open-top, front-engine roadster rather than a Cayman-style fixed-roof mid-engine coupe. The available material does not provide a matched technical comparison with the Cayman, so the price should not be read as evidence of equal performance or handling. Consider it when a retractable roof and two-seat touring matter more than the Cayman format.
Mazda MX-5
The MX-5 surfaced as a 2026 model in Mazda Mexico specifications, but U.S. trim, pricing and availability were not verified. It is relevant for shoppers who want a lightweight, open-top two-seat sports car and are willing to prioritize simplicity and roadster character over Porsche-level power, size or badge prestige. Confirm the exact market and specification before making a purchase plan.

Electric open-top option: MG Cyberster
MG Australia markets the Cyberster as an all-electric sports convertible. That addresses two Cayman-replacement desires at once—electric operation and open-air driving—but it is region-specific evidence. The Australian page warns that its information may not be a definitive specification guide or an offer for sale. Check whether the Cyberster is officially sold, supported and orderable in your country before treating it as a practical alternative.
Should you wait for an electric 718?
At Porsche’s 2025 annual press conference, CEO Oliver Blume said: “In the medium term, our customers can also look forward to an all-electric sports car in the 718 segment. It’s going to be even more dynamic, powerful and purist.” This confirms a strategic outlook for an all-electric 718-segment sports car, not a retail timetable.
Porsche has not supplied, in that statement, a launch date, final name, price, specifications or order-opening schedule. “Medium term” should therefore not be converted into a promised model year. Waiting is rational only if you can keep your current vehicle and accept that timing and configuration remain unknown. If you need a car now, choose from currently orderable vehicles or search used 718 inventory instead.

A purchase checklist before you commit
- Define the non-negotiable. Write down whether it is mid-engine balance, a fixed-roof coupe, manual gasoline driving, an EV powertrain, open-top motoring, rear-seat space, cargo room or a Porsche badge.
- Set a same-market budget. Compare the same country and model year. U.S. starting MSRPs above exclude options, taxes, registration, delivery and dealer charges, so calculate an out-the-door ceiling rather than relying on the headline number.
- Confirm physical fit. Check seat count, luggage capacity, roof operation, ground clearance, garage dimensions and towing needs. An SUV or four-door can solve daily duties that a two-seat sports car cannot.
- Audit EV readiness. For an electric choice, verify home electrical capacity, charging access, route charging and winter conditions. The published 21-minute Macan estimate assumes an appropriate high-power station and optimal conditions.
- Verify supply locally. Ask a dealer whether the exact trim is orderable, in stock or subject to a wait. The Cyberster information is Australian, while the cited Porsche and Toyota prices are U.S. figures.
- Compare the ownership path. Obtain insurance quotes, warranty details, service intervals and financing terms. Comparative long-term reliability, depreciation, maintenance and resale results are not established by the available specifications.
- Drive the finalists separately. A specification sheet cannot establish which car handles best. Evaluate visibility, ride, entry and exit, steering, brake feel, power delivery and noise in the roads where you will actually use the car.
Bottom line for each type of Cayman shopper
- Closest new sports-car shape: start with the Lotus Emira, especially if a mid-engine layout and available manual transmission matter.
- Porsche EV for everyday utility: choose the Macan Electric if an SUV is acceptable.
- Porsche EV with more passenger and cargo room: consider the Taycan and accept its size and price step.
- Lower-priced gasoline coupe: investigate the GR Supra, knowing it is front-engine.
- Open-air driving: look at the Z4 or MX-5, with local specification checks.
- Electric convertible: investigate the Cyberster only after confirming it is sold and supported where you live.
