Before discussing an EV brake problem with a dealer, check the vehicle’s 17-character VIN and ask for the exact campaign number, current status, remedy, repair availability and written instructions for driving meanwhile. A recall or investigation affecting a model line does not prove that your particular vehicle is included.
If braking feels impaired, stop driving when safe and contact the manufacturer or dealer for vehicle-specific safety directions. A dealer’s informal reassurance does not override an active “do not drive” notice from the manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Investigation, recall and service campaign: know which status you are discussing
Owners often use “recall” for every brake-related announcement, but the legal and practical statuses differ. Ask the advisor to identify the status in the manufacturer’s system and, when applicable, in NHTSA records.
Open or closed investigation
NHTSA reviews consumer complaints, crash information, manufacturer reports and other data. It may open an investigation to determine whether an alleged safety defect exists. An investigation can close without a defect finding, or it can lead to a recall recommendation. An open investigation is therefore not the same as an order to repair every vehicle in a model line.

Safety recall
A safety recall follows a manufacturer or NHTSA determination that a vehicle presents a safety risk or fails a safety standard. The manufacturer must provide a remedy, normally at no charge, for vehicles covered by the campaign. The remedy may be ready immediately, released in stages, or temporarily unavailable because parts, software or procedures are still being prepared.
Service bulletin or other campaign
A technical service bulletin gives dealer technicians a procedure for diagnosing or repairing a known condition. It may not be a safety recall and may not apply to every VIN. Ask whether the work is a recall repair, a service bulletin procedure, a warranty repair or another campaign, and ask who pays.

Start with a VIN-specific check
Find the 17-character VIN on the dashboard near the windshield, the driver-door label or registration documents. Enter it into NHTSA’s recall lookup before the appointment. The result is vehicle-specific and can show unrepaired recalls and related information. It does not establish that every vehicle of the same model or year is affected.

Questions to establish applicability
- Does this campaign apply to my exact VIN, not merely to this model or model year?
- What production dates, drivetrain configuration or software version define the affected population?
- Is the campaign open, completed, superseded or closed for this VIN?
- Are there multiple brake-related campaigns or updates on this vehicle?
Questions that reveal the actual brake defect and remedy
A campaign number alone does not tell you what the vehicle will do differently. Ask the advisor to explain the failure mechanism in plain language and to identify symptoms that require immediate attention.
Defect and symptoms
- What component or software function can fail?
- Could the condition affect service braking, regenerative braking, anti-lock braking, stability control, adaptive cruise control or a warning system?
- What warning lights, messages, pedal changes, noises or changes in stopping distance should I watch for?
- Does the condition occur only under particular conditions, such as downhill travel, low battery state, cold weather or use of a driver-assistance feature?
Remedy and readiness
- Is the remedy a software calibration, over-the-air update, inspection, adjustment, replacement part or another procedure?
- Has the remedy been released for my VIN, and can the dealer perform it today?
- How long will the vehicle be unavailable?
- If a part or software package is not available, when will the dealer provide the next status update?
- Will any related diagnostic work be performed during the same visit?
Do not assume that a brake recall requires a physical part. Some defects are corrected with control-module software. Conversely, a software update cannot correct a mechanical defect unless the official remedy says it can.
Can you drive the EV while waiting?
There is no universal answer. The safe interim action depends on the exact campaign, vehicle configuration and risk described in the official notice. Ask for written manufacturer or NHTSA instructions rather than relying on a general statement that the vehicle “seems fine.”

Ask for specific operating limits
- May I drive normally, or should I avoid highways, towing, steep descents or a driver-assistance feature?
- Should regenerative braking be disabled or avoided?
- Must the vehicle be parked until repaired?
- What should I do if a warning appears while driving?
- Is roadside assistance or transport available if the remedy is not ready?
NHTSA’s July 17, 2025 alert illustrates why campaign-specific instructions matter. For listed 2020–2026 Volvo plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles covered by recall 25V-392, the agency told owners with unrepaired vehicles not to use regenerative braking until the remedy was completed. The alert warned that the defect could cause complete loss of braking while going downhill and described a serious incident. That instruction applies to the vehicles and recall identified in the alert; it must not be transferred to another EV without an equivalent official direction.

The same alert said that, as of July 15, 2025, about 1,000 of 11,469 affected vehicles had not downloaded the over-the-air remedy. Those are historical counts, not a current completion rate.
If braking feels impaired
Stop driving as soon as it is safe. Do not attempt universal mechanical troubleshooting or continue testing the vehicle in traffic. Contact the manufacturer, dealer or roadside provider and describe exactly what you felt, heard or saw, including warning messages and conditions.
What an EV brake recall may look like in practice
Software calibration example: recall 25V-012
GM’s Part 573 report for recall 25V-012 covered certain 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV all-wheel-drive vehicles. An incorrect brake-control-module calibration could prevent adaptive cruise control from applying the service brakes as designed. The reported remedy was a brake-system-control-module software update.
GM reported five field complaints and no known accidents or injuries when it submitted the filing. Those figures describe the filing at that time; they do not predict the risk for another model, another campaign or a later date. The example also shows why asking “What exactly will you fix?” matters: the remedy was a calibration update, not a general replacement of brake hardware.

Bring a complete record to the appointment
Prepare a short timeline so the advisor can connect your symptom with the campaign record.
- VIN and current mileage.
- Date, location and driving conditions for each event.
- Warning-light symbols and the exact text of dashboard messages.
- Whether the issue involved the brake pedal, stopping distance, regenerative braking or a driver-assistance feature.
- Photos, video or diagnostic messages captured safely while the vehicle was stationary.
- Previous repair orders, software-update notices and roadside-assistance records.
Never photograph or type on a phone while driving. If the symptom is intermittent, tell the advisor how often it occurs and whether switching drive modes, restarting the vehicle or charging changes it; do not perform risky tests to reproduce a failure.

Before accepting the vehicle, ask the service department to document the campaign number, VIN, repair date, mileage and remedy performed. The repair order should identify the software version or part installed when applicable and state whether the campaign is complete.
Verify completion
- Ask the advisor to show that the campaign status changed to completed in the service system.
- Confirm that all warning messages related to the campaign were cleared only after the prescribed repair and diagnostic checks.
- Ask whether any post-repair operating restriction remains.
- Keep the repair order, campaign letter and any software-update confirmation with your vehicle records.
If the remedy was an over-the-air update, ask how the vehicle confirms installation and whether it must remain parked, connected or powered for a specified period. Do not treat a download notification alone as proof that every required inspection or dealer procedure is complete.

If the dealer says there is no recall but braking remains abnormal
A “no recall” result does not invalidate a genuine braking concern. It may mean the VIN is outside the campaign, the issue is under investigation, the database has not yet updated, or the symptom has another cause.
Ask for a documented diagnostic path
- Describe the symptom precisely and request that it be written on the repair order.
- Ask the dealer to scan for diagnostic trouble codes, check applicable technical bulletins and verify software levels.
- Request the test results and the reason for any “could not duplicate” conclusion.
- If the issue persists, arrange a follow-up visit and ask what evidence would change the diagnosis.
- Escalate to the manufacturer’s customer-care case team, providing the VIN and every repair-order number.
A dealer’s inability to reproduce a symptom is not the same as proving the vehicle is safe under all conditions. If braking feels impaired, stop driving when safe and obtain vehicle-specific guidance.
Report the unresolved concern
Report persistent or safety-critical braking problems to NHTSA through its vehicle-safety complaint channel. NHTSA reviews complaints and other information; the agency states, “There is no set number” of complaints required to open an investigation. Include the VIN, dates, mileage, symptoms, warning messages, dealer findings and copies of repair records. A complaint does not guarantee a recall, but it adds documented information to the agency’s safety review.
Use campaign numbers and dates correctly
Ask whether the number is an NHTSA recall number, such as 25V-392 or 25V-012, or an internal manufacturer campaign number. Ask when the notice was issued, whether the remedy has changed and whether the campaign is open for your VIN. NHTSA search results distinguish the date a recall was published from the date the safety issue was reported; investigation listings can also be searched by opening or closing date.
Do not rank one EV brake recall as “more severe” than another based only on headlines. Compare the exact defect description, affected vehicles, failure conditions, remedy and official interim-driving instruction.
A concise dealer script
You can use this wording at the service desk:
“Please check this 17-character VIN for every open safety recall, investigation-related campaign and service bulletin involving braking or driver assistance. What is the NHTSA or manufacturer campaign number? Does it apply to this VIN? Please explain the defect, symptoms, official remedy, whether the remedy is ready, and whether I may drive before repair. If driving is restricted, I need the manufacturer’s written instruction. Please give me a repair order showing the campaign status and work completed.”
Why keeping records matters
NHTSA reported 1,073 vehicle and equipment safety recalls in 2024 and more than 29.3 million vehicles recalled that year, according to its October 30, 2025 consumer alert. Those nationwide totals show why owners should rely on the exact VIN and campaign record rather than a model-wide assumption. Your repair order, complaint confirmation and manufacturer case number create a traceable record if the symptom continues or the campaign changes.
