Before authorizing Rivian collision work, verify that the actual facility is currently Rivian Certified for your repair scope, ask which vehicle-specific procedures, approved tools and parts it will use, and confirm whether high-voltage isolation, diagnostic scans or Driver+ calibration are required. Get the repair plan, supplements, schedule changes and handoff records in writing.
Rivian says third-party repairs are possible, but recommends Rivian Service Centers or Mobile Service. It points owners to certified locations for collision repairs, diagnostics and calibrations. Your vehicle’s model, production date, impact and repair scope determine the applicable procedure.

Why the shop’s Rivian qualification matters
A Rivian is not repaired under one universal collision recipe. Rivian’s May 7, 2024 repair position statement for U.S. R1T, R1S and EDV vehicles from model years 2022 onward says procedures can change and can vary by model and production date. The correct facility therefore needs access to the current procedure for your particular vehicle, not merely general electric-vehicle experience.
Rivian’s stated standard is specific: “To ensure proper operation, safety, and durability of the Rivian vehicle, all collision repairs should be performed by a Rivian Certified Technician, with Rivian approved tooling, at a Rivian Certified Collision Center.” That is Rivian’s repair position, not a statement that every insurer or jurisdiction must pay for every specified operation.

Certification also has different categories. An application used for the Rivian Certified Collision Network distinguishes structural passenger-vehicle work from commercial-vehicle work, diagnostics and calibration, and business-to-business repairs. The category held by a facility must match the work your vehicle needs.

The application describes categories; it does not prove that a particular shop is currently active or certified. Verify the location through Rivian’s current network information or by contacting Rivian, and ask the shop to identify the certification and scope in writing.
Questions to ask before choosing the facility
“Is this location currently Rivian Certified, and what certification applies to my repair?”
Ask about the exact street location, not only the company name. A business may have multiple facilities with different capabilities. Have the estimator describe whether the job involves structural work, aluminum or composite components, diagnostic operations, calibration or commercial-vehicle construction. If the shop cannot state its current category, pause before signing an authorization.
“Will a Rivian Certified Technician use the current procedure for my model, year and production configuration?”
Ask how the technician will identify the applicable procedure and how updates are checked. Rivian says its repair procedures may be revised and may differ by production date. A satisfactory answer names the source of the procedure and ties it to your vehicle identification number or configuration rather than relying on a generic body-repair manual.

“Which tools and parts are listed in the written plan?”
Rivian’s general repair guidance calls for Rivian-approved tooling and Rivian Original Equipment Parts. It says Rivian does not support aftermarket, optional OEM, alternative, reverse-engineered, used, salvaged or externally remanufactured parts. Ask the estimator to list proposed parts, their status and any special tools or fixtures. If a component is unavailable or an alternative is proposed, ask the shop to stop and explain the safety, operation, warranty and scheduling implications before installing it.
This is a way to compare the written plan with Rivian’s stated position. It is not a prediction about what your insurance policy covers, nor is it a universal legal rule requiring one payment decision.
“Does this damage call for high-voltage de-energizing?”
Rivian warns repair personnel to consult the applicable service procedure to determine whether the high-voltage system must be de-energized before work. Ask how the facility will make that determination, who is qualified to perform it and how the step will be recorded. Do not attempt to disable the battery system yourself or ask a general technician to improvise a procedure.

Pre-repair and post-repair scans
Rivian’s general guidance calls for diagnostic scans before and after all repairs. Ask the shop to state which scan equipment and software it will use, what the pre-repair scan found, and how post-repair results will be reviewed. Request copies of both records. A scan can identify stored faults that are not visible in the exterior damage estimate and can document whether faults were cleared or remain after work.

Driver+ and other calibration
Rivian’s Driver+ calibration position statement, dated November 14, 2024, addresses repairs involving Driver+ components on the R1T and R1S. Ask whether the damaged area or any removed, replaced or disturbed component requires calibration before return, who will perform it and what record you will receive.
Do not accept either extreme: not every collision automatically requires every calibration, but a shop should not dismiss calibration without checking the affected components and current Rivian procedure. If the facility cannot perform the operation, ask whether it will coordinate with a Rivian Calibration Diagnostics Center or another qualified location, who transports the vehicle and how responsibility for the final result is assigned.
Make the estimate and supplement process explicit
Ask what the initial estimate includes
Request an itemized estimate that separates parts, labor, structural operations, paint or refinishing, scans, calibration, sublet work and applicable taxes or fees. Ask which operations are confirmed and which depend on teardown findings. Have the estimator identify parts that are ordered, pending approval or unavailable.

Ask how hidden damage changes will be handled
Collision damage often becomes clearer after disassembly. Ask: “If teardown finds additional damage, how will you show the change to the estimate and repair plan, and how will you coordinate the insurer supplement?” Establish whether the shop will provide photographs, measurements or diagnostic findings with the supplement and whether work pauses while approval is obtained. Get your authorization threshold in writing; do not rely on an informal promise that the insurer will approve every addition.

Ask how schedule changes are communicated
Have the shop explain who contacts you, how often updates are sent and what triggers a revised completion date. A shop-authored collision guide identifies insurer approval, ordering, shipping and backorders as common reasons for changes. Treat that as practical communication advice, not a guaranteed timetable. Ask which parts or approvals are still outstanding and when the next update will arrive.
Compare two or more shops on the same questions
Use one written checklist for every facility so a low estimate does not hide missing operations. Compare the following items:

Choose the facility that can answer specifically and document its answers. A polished reception area or a low initial price does not establish Rivian certification or prove that required diagnostic work is included.

- Confirm the vehicle and scope. Make sure the estimate identifies the correct model, model year, vehicle identification number and the areas to be repaired.
- Confirm the procedure source. Ask the estimator to note that the current Rivian procedure for your vehicle will govern the work.
- Confirm parts and tools. Have the written plan identify Rivian Original Equipment Parts and approved tooling, or explain any proposed deviation before work begins.
- Confirm high-voltage handling. Ask whether the applicable procedure requires de-energizing and how qualified personnel will document it.
- Confirm diagnostics. Require pre-repair and post-repair scans and ask how you will receive the results.
- Confirm Driver+ responsibility. Ask whether calibration applies, who performs it and what happens if the shop must use another qualified facility.
- Confirm communication. Establish your contact person, update frequency, supplement approval process and how parts delays will be reported.

- Pre-repair and post-repair diagnostic scan results.
- Driver+ or other calibration documentation when the affected repair required it.
- The final parts list, including any parts supplied by another facility.
- A description of structural, electrical, paint, alignment and sublet operations included in the final bill.
- Any revised estimate, insurer supplement and customer approvals.
- The identity of another facility if scanning, calibration or a specialized operation was outsourced.
Ask directly whether any warning messages, pending work, restricted functions or known limitations remain. Do not drive away until the shop explains unresolved items and states who will correct them. Keep the records with your vehicle history; they can help a future technician understand prior repairs.
Warning signs that warrant a second opinion
- The facility cannot identify its current Rivian certification or says a corporate affiliation automatically covers every location.
- The estimator proposes a generic procedure without checking model, production date or configuration.
- The parts list is vague, uses terms such as “equivalent” without identifying the part, or changes from Rivian’s stated parts position without discussion.
- The shop says scans are unnecessary, will be done only if a warning appears, or cannot provide post-repair results.
- The estimator promises that every collision either requires or never requires Driver+ calibration without examining the affected components.
- Teardown supplements, insurer approvals and schedule changes are handled only by verbal promises.
- The facility cannot explain who is responsible for work sent to another shop or what records you will receive.
A warning sign is not proof that the repair will fail, but it is a reason to obtain a written explanation or consult another certified facility before authorizing work.
Keep Rivian’s guidance separate from insurance decisions
Rivian’s recommendation for certified technicians, approved tooling and Original Equipment Parts describes the manufacturer’s position on proper operation, safety and durability. Your insurance policy, local law and claim agreement may address parts, labor rates and approvals differently. Ask the insurer and shop to identify disagreements in writing, then decide whether to authorize the proposed operation with a clear record of who accepts the consequence.

Do not let an insurer’s preliminary estimate substitute for the shop’s vehicle-specific plan. Conversely, do not assume that a shop’s preferred part or process is approved by Rivian merely because it appears on an estimate.
Use this short script on the phone
“Is this exact location currently Rivian Certified, and what certification covers my repair? Will a Rivian Certified Technician use the current procedure for my model, production date and configuration? Please list the Rivian-approved tools and parts in the estimate. Does the procedure require high-voltage de-energizing? Will you perform and document scans before and after repair? Do the affected components require Driver+ calibration, and who will complete it? How will you show teardown supplements, parts delays and schedule changes? At handoff, will I receive the final invoice, scan results, calibration record if applicable, parts list and any outsourced-work records?”
Clear answers to those questions let you compare facilities on capability and accountability rather than on the first quoted price alone.
