For normal road driving, inflate a Rivian R2 with the 20-inch all-terrain package to 42 psi when cold, unless the tire-pressure placard on your driver-door jamb specifies a different value for your exact vehicle. For off-road sand or rock, secondary reporting of the R2 manual identifies 32 psi as the recommended minimum for that 20-inch all-terrain setup. Check the placard and current manual, carry a reliable gauge and inflator, and restore road pressure before returning to pavement.

The practical rule is simple: use the cold placard pressure for pavement, and treat any air-down number as a terrain-specific setting rather than a universal R2 specification.

Why the driver-door placard overrides guesses
Rivian calibrates the recommended pressure for a particular wheel, tire, vehicle weight and loading condition. The placard on the driver-door jamb is therefore more useful than a number printed on a tire sidewall or copied from another R2. Read the placard on your own vehicle every time you change wheel size or tire type.

“Cold” means the vehicle has been parked long enough for the tires to return close to ambient temperature. Check before driving, or after only a very short, slow movement. Driving creates heat and raises the gauge reading; bleeding a warm tire down to the cold target can leave it underinflated after it cools.

The sidewall maximum is not the R2 recommendation
Owner discussion about the R2 distinguishes a 51-psi tire maximum from the vehicle’s approximately 42-psi road setting. The maximum molded into a sidewall is a limit for the tire under specified conditions, not the pressure Rivian selected for ride, handling, load capacity and contact-patch behavior. Never substitute the sidewall maximum for the door-placard value.
Load and temperature change what you observe
Passengers, cargo, ambient temperature, sun exposure and sustained speed all affect measured pressure. These factors do not authorize inventing a new target: use the placard’s cold number, check all tires with the same gauge and investigate a tire that repeatedly loses pressure.
Which R2 tire package are you running?
The off-road figure discussed here is specific to the R2’s 20-inch all-terrain package. Rivian’s launch-package description identifies the package and contrasts it with a 21-inch all-season configuration.

Rivian describes the taller all-terrain sidewall as providing additional flexibility and, when appropriate, allowing lower pressure for sand and rock with more rubber between the trail and the rim. That benefit depends on speed, load, surface and bead security; it is not permission to drive at one low pressure everywhere.
How low can you air down the 20-inch all-terrain tires?
Secondary reporting that cites page 226 of the R2 manual says 32 psi is the recommended minimum for the 20-inch all-terrain setup. The same owner report mentions 25 psi as an absolute minimum and 33 psi for that owner’s all-season tires. Because the accessible June 2026 U.S. R2 Owner’s Guide copy does not expose a searchable pressure table, treat these as reported figures to verify, not as a replacement for the placard or the current manual supplied with your vehicle.
Use 32 psi as a starting boundary, not a promise of traction
At 32 psi, the sidewall can conform more readily to irregular rock and spread the contact patch in loose material. Whether that is appropriate depends on the route. Sharp rocks, deep ruts, heavy cargo, a steep side slope or a high ambient temperature can increase the chance of impact or debeading. Conversely, soft sand may benefit from a lower-pressure strategy in some vehicles, but the reported R2 guidance does not establish a lower value that is safe for every load and terrain.

Why the 25-psi report needs caution
The 25-psi figure is an owner’s description of an absolute minimum, not a directly confirmed factory table value. Do not treat it as a target, and do not assume it applies to the 21-inch package, replacement tires, a heavily loaded vehicle or high-speed travel. If your placard or current manual gives a different limit, follow those vehicle-specific instructions.
Speed and distance matter after airing down
Lower pressure is an off-road maneuvering choice. Drive slowly, avoid abrupt steering and braking, and inspect the sidewalls after difficult sections. A pressure that is tolerable for a short technical obstacle can be unsuitable for a long transit, a fast gravel road or a hot day.
Step-by-step: setting pressure before a trail
- Identify the package. Confirm that the vehicle has the 20-inch all-terrain wheels and the 255/60R20 factory-size tire reference. If it has 21-inch all-season tires or a different replacement, use that package’s placard and do not copy the 20-inch setting.
- Read the placard. Record the cold road pressure for the front and rear positions. If the values differ, keep them separate rather than averaging them.
- Check cold pressures. Use a digital tire-pressure gauge before driving. Measure every mounted tire and inspect for cuts, bulges, embedded objects or a visibly damaged valve.
- Bring recovery equipment. Carry a digital tire-pressure gauge and a portable 12V tire inflator capable of restoring all tires at the end of the route. A deflator can make controlled adjustments easier, but it does not replace a gauge.
- Choose a conservative off-road setting. For the 20-inch all-terrain package, the reported manual-based reference is 32 psi as the recommended minimum. If conditions are unfamiliar, begin higher and reduce in small, measured steps rather than immediately approaching a reported lower limit.
- Recheck after each adjustment. Measure all four tires after the vehicle has settled. Confirm that the bead remains seated and that no tire has lost pressure faster than the others.
- Drive to the conditions. Keep speed low enough to avoid heat buildup and tire deflection impacts. Increase pressure again if the sidewalls are folding excessively, steering feels vague or the route becomes faster and smoother.
How to air back up before pavement
Reinflation is part of the trail procedure, not an optional cleanup step. Stop on a stable surface before joining a public road, set each tire to the vehicle’s cold placard target as closely as practical, and check again after the tires have cooled. A portable 12V inflator may take time with large all-terrain casings, so start early rather than at the last turn onto pavement.

Do not rely solely on the dashboard pressure display while adjusting. Use a hand gauge at each valve, then confirm that the vehicle’s tire-pressure monitoring system no longer shows an abnormal reading. If a warning remains after pressures are corrected, inspect for a leak or damage instead of assuming the system is merely slow.

Record the value printed on your vehicle rather than treating a forum post as a universal specification.

Replacing the factory all-terrain tire
The factory-size reference for the 20-inch all-terrain package is the BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A 255/60R20. Before buying a replacement, verify that the tire’s size, load rating, speed rating and wheel fitment match the requirements on your R2 and its placard. Inventory and approved fitment can vary by region, so a tire with the same nominal size is not automatically an appropriate substitute.
Compare candidates on the issues that affect pressure decisions: sidewall height and rim protection, loose-surface traction, on-road efficiency and handling, ease of airing down and restoring pressure, and availability in 255/60R20. After changing tire model or construction, recheck the placard and the manufacturer’s fitment information; never assume the old tire’s maximum or an internet pressure chart is correct for the new one.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Using the sidewall maximum: Treat it as a tire limit, not the R2’s operating target. Use the driver-door placard.
- Checking after a highway drive: Heat inflates the reading. Measure cold and avoid bleeding a hot tire to the cold target.
- Applying 32 psi to every R2: That reported value is for the 20-inch all-terrain setup. Confirm wheel and tire package first.
- Using an all-season number on an all-terrain tire: The owner report’s 33-psi all-season figure is not a general R2 setting.
- Going straight to the reported 25-psi floor: It is secondary reporting, not a verified universal factory limit. Start conservatively and consider load, terrain and speed.
- Driving back to pavement while aired down: Reinflation is required before normal road speeds and handling are resumed.
- Ignoring a pressure imbalance: A tire that repeatedly drops below the others may have a puncture, valve problem or bead leak; inspect it before continuing.
A practical decision rule
For a road trip, set the exact cold placard pressure and leave it there. For a planned sand or rock section with the 20-inch all-terrain tires, begin at the reported 32-psi minimum only after confirming the manual and considering load, speed and terrain. Measure rather than guess, change pressure gradually, and air back to the placard setting before pavement. That approach preserves the R2’s intended road handling while using the all-terrain sidewall’s flexibility where it is useful.
