The rarest supercars of the 1990s shared one defining trait: scarcity. But that scarcity came about in different ways—some were deliberately limited road cars, while others were built in connection with racing homologation. Those categories overlap in spirit, but they are not the same thing, and the available production figures do not support a definitive ranking of every supercar from the decade.
Scarcity was the common thread—not a single recipe
The Louwman Museum’s “Supercars of the 90s” exhibition groups together production models, limited editions, homologation cars and prototypes. Its definition combines limited production with at least 500 hp and a top speed well over 300 km/h, but the cars in its exhibition did not all become rare for the same reason. The museum’s exhibition overview includes both road cars made in small numbers and street versions connected directly to racing.
That distinction matters. A limited edition is a road car produced in a restricted run; a homologation special is a road-going car connected to the requirements or purpose of racing. A low count alone does not tell you which story applies.
How the production figures compare
| Car | Reported production | What the figure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| McLaren F1 | 106 examples, according to McLaren; publication year not specified on the page | A marque-reported limited production run. McLaren’s model page calls it a limited production run. |
| Bugatti EB110 | Bugatti reports approximately 128 or approximately 134, depending on the page; Gooding & Company reports 136 completed | The sources use differing totals and category descriptions. The discrepancy is detailed below. |
| Jaguar XJ220 | 281 cars, produced from 1992 to 1994, according to the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust; publication year not specified | The production car used a TWR V6 and rear-wheel drive, unlike the original concept’s prototype four-wheel-drive layout. The heritage trust’s vehicle record describes the production model. |
| Ferrari F50 | 349 built, including 55 for the US market, according to Gooding & Company; page publication date not established | An auction-house figure that also identifies a regional allocation—not a figure attributed here to Ferrari. Gooding’s catalogue entry gives the count. |
These are useful examples, not a like-for-like leaderboard: the EB110 totals vary with the categories included, and the F50 number comes from an auction-house catalogue rather than the manufacturer. A production count is meaningful only alongside its source and counting scope.

Why the EB110 count is unsettled
Bugatti’s figures do not agree across its own accounts. Its EB110 Legend page gives approximately 128 vehicles: 96 GT and 32 Super Sport, with two works race cars included in the total. A 2021 anniversary article instead reports approximately 134: 95 EB110s and 39 Super Sport vehicles, including prototypes and two factory race cars. Bugatti’s EB110 Legend account and its 2021 anniversary article present those differing totals.
Gooding & Company reports 136 EB110s completed, including 30 production Super Sport models. That is a separate auction-house figure with its own stated scope, not a correction that resolves Bugatti’s inconsistent totals. Gooding’s EB110 catalogue entry gives that number. The available accounts do not establish why the figures differ, so none should be presented as a definitive count without its attribution and qualifications.

Some were rare because they were built for racing’s demands
The Mercedes CLK GTR street version and Porsche 911 GT1 street version are identified by the Louwman Museum as homologation specials. Their rarity reflects a different relationship between road and race car than a limited-run road model such as the McLaren F1. The museum’s exhibition page lists these examples but does not establish production totals for them, so a numerical comparison is not warranted.
The market downturn added pressure
The Louwman Museum says a financial crisis around 1992–93 made wealthy enthusiasts more cautious, orders for supercars collapsed, and some new sports-car brands failed or projects ended early. Bugatti likewise describes a collapse in the supercar market and falling demand before its Campogalliano plant closed in 1995. These accounts help explain the period’s difficult market, but they do not make the downturn the sole reason every model was scarce: some runs were deliberately limited, and some road cars were tied to racing purposes.

What the counts can—and cannot—show
The McLaren F1’s 106 examples and Jaguar XJ220’s 281 cars offer relatively clear model-level figures from their respective marque and heritage sources. The EB110 illustrates why even an apparently simple production total may depend on whether a source includes prototypes and factory race cars. Homologation cars add another complication: their purpose helps explain why they exist, but the museum listing alone does not supply a production count.
So the title’s “one thing in common” is best understood as a pattern among notable cars, not a rule for every vehicle called a 1990s supercar. Scarcity was the shared thread; the route to scarcity varied from model to model.
