That does not mean their batteries lost 36% of their capacity: the figure compares reported range with EPA estimates, a different measure from battery degradation or the miles a driver can cover on a particular trip.
What the three-year Tesla range figure means
Futurism reported on May 30, 2024, that an analysis by Recurrent covering nearly 13,000 electric cars found Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles at three years of ownership achieved 64% of their EPA-rated range. Futurism also reported that vehicles at zero miles were around 70% of EPA-rated range. The precise result is therefore a comparison with EPA ratings, not a direct measurement that Tesla batteries shed 36% of their capacity. Futurism’s account
Futurism gave an example attributed to InsideEVs: a new 2023 Model 3 with a 315-mile EPA estimate would correspond to about 230 miles under the reported comparison. That is an illustrative calculation reported second-hand, not an independently verified range for every 2023 Model 3 or a prediction of how far one will travel in real conditions.
EPA range, dashboard range and real-world range are different
An EPA rating is a standardized estimate, not a promise of the distance a car will cover on every charge. Recurrent describes EPA range testing as laboratory testing at room temperature and speeds not exceeding 60 mph, with manufacturer-determined adjustments. Recurrent co-founder and CEO Scott Case put the limitation this way in a quote from a Recurrent white paper reported by Futurism: “The basic EPA testing protocol gets it wrong for all EVs, as it is performed in a laboratory at room temperature without exceeding 60 mph and allows for manufacturer-determined adjustments.” Futurism’s report and quotation

- ✅ Perfect Fit & Compatibility: BCI Group Size 48 (H6), 12V 70Ah, 760CCA, 120RC. Dimensions: 10.94" L x 6.89" W x 7.48" H. Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). Ensure proper fit by comparing the size, terminal position, and CCA with your original battery. This ensures compatibility and avoids any fitment issues for your vehicle.
- ✅ Reliable Starting Power in All Conditions: Delivers 760 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) for reliable engine starts, even in freezing weather. This automotive battery is built to perform consistently within a wide temperature range from -22°F to 158°F, withstanding short-term extremes from -40°F to 75°F, ensuring maximum performance no matter the weather.
- ✅ Advanced AGM Technology for High Performance: Specially designed for vehicles with start-stop technology and those requiring greater power, this AGM battery delivers up to 2X the cycle life of conventional batteries. With its high-density negative paste, it ensures improved conductivity, longer battery life, and faster recharge times. Maintenance-free design—no need to add liquid or water.
- ✅ Durable & Safe Design: This group 48 battery is 18X more vibration-resistant than standard batteries, ensuring a longer service life and reliable performance. Its leak-proof, non-spillable design offers enhanced safety, and the absence of free acid guarantees stable performance, preventing acid leakage and internal corrosion. Ideal for tough conditions.
- ✅ Not for Deep Cycle Applications: Please note that this is a starting battery and is not designed for deep-cycle applications such as solar or marine use. It is ideal for vehicles with higher electrical accessory loads or those that need a high CCA starting battery with enhanced cyclic performance. Verify that the battery type and specifications match your vehicle's requirements.
A Tesla’s dashboard range display is another measure. Recurrent says the top-line dashboard figure does not account for temperature, driving efficiency or modifications made after the car was sold. A navigation estimate, by contrast, accounts for temperature and driving conditions. The actual distance between charges depends on the trip and can change with speed, temperature and climate-control use. Recurrent’s explanation of Tesla range measures
For context on its separate Tesla Real-World Range feature, Recurrent said in July 2023 that it used distance between charging sessions and local temperatures, drawing on more than 360,000 charging cycles from over 12,000 Teslas. That describes the feature’s data and approach; it is not the same statistic as the 64% figure Futurism attributed to Recurrent.

Why another Tesla degradation figure is not a direct rebuttal
Futurism also reported that former Tesla investor-relations executive Martin Viecha disputed the comparison, noting that EPA figures differ from Tesla’s own. In the same account, Futurism said Tesla study outputs showed about 20% battery degradation after 150,000 miles. The underlying Tesla study was not available in the material cited, so this number should be understood as Futurism’s account of those outputs, not as a directly reviewed Tesla publication. Futurism’s account of the counterpoint
That mileage-based battery-degradation figure and Recurrent’s reported share of EPA-rated range describe different things. One concerns battery degradation after a stated distance; the other compares reported vehicle range with EPA ratings by vehicle age. They cannot be treated as competing measurements of the same 36% loss.

How to assess a range claim for a Tesla
- Check the measure: Is the number an EPA rating, the dashboard display, a navigation estimate or observed distance between charges?
- Check the comparison: Is it about battery capacity, miles of range or range as a share of an EPA estimate?
- Check the vehicle: Note the model, age and mileage rather than applying a group result to every Tesla.
- Check conditions: Speed, temperature and climate-control use can affect actual driving range.
Readers looking for a condition-aware view can consult Recurrent’s Tesla Real-World Range feature. Its published description explains the use of charging-session distances and local temperatures, but does not establish that every Tesla will match a particular estimate.
