HF means “High Fidelity.” Lancia used the initials for its Hi.Fi. Club, whose members were known for loyalty to the marque. On the Delta, “HF Integrale” identifies the all-wheel-drive performance evolution that followed the 1986 Delta HF 4WD. The 1988 Integrale was not merely a new badge: it brought wider wheel arches, larger front air intakes, a six-speed gearbox and a weight reduction of about 23 kg compared with the preceding version.
The name therefore combines two ideas: HF is Lancia’s historic performance-and-owner-community designation, while Integrale marks the later stage of the Delta’s all-wheel-drive development. The 1989 HF Integrale 16V was a further evolution, identifiable by its four-valve-per-cylinder engine and bonnet hump.

What does HF mean on a Lancia Delta Integrale?
HF is the abbreviation for “High Fidelity.” The initials originated with Lancia’s Hi.Fi. Club, established in 1960 for especially loyal Lancia customers. Delta Historic’s history describes HF as the abbreviation for “High Fidelity” and connects it directly with that club: Delta Historic, “History”.

It was a Lancia identity that became strongly associated with sporting models. When the Delta acquired the HF designation, the badge signaled the performance-oriented version of the hatchback rather than a separate model family unrelated to the regular Delta.

“Integrale” is the second part of the name. In this context it identifies the later all-wheel-drive Delta performance version that followed the Delta HF 4WD. It is not a translation of HF and it does not replace the High Fidelity meaning. Read together, “HF Integrale” means a high-performance Delta in the HF lineage, using the Integrale specification of the all-wheel-drive car.
Why the name can be confusing
Several Delta versions carry related names, and “original” can refer to different points in the sequence. The first all-wheel-drive Delta was the Delta HF 4WD, presented in 1986. The Delta HF Integrale arrived in 1988 as its next version. The HF Integrale 16V followed in 1989. Thus, the HF 4WD is the original all-wheel-drive Delta in this sequence, while the Integrale is its successor, not an alternative spelling for the same car.
How the Delta HF 4WD and HF Integrale fit into the timeline
1986: the Delta HF 4WD
Lancia’s own historical account dates the first all-wheel-drive Delta, the HF 4WD, to 1986. That date establishes the starting point for the road-and-rally lineage that later became identified with the Integrale name. The HF 4WD’s place in the sequence matters: it is the predecessor against which the 1988 Integrale’s body, transmission and mass changes are described.
1988: the HF Integrale
Lancia introduced the HF Integrale in 1988. The visual change was immediately noticeable. The car received widened wheel arches to accommodate wider tires and larger front air intakes than the preceding version. Those changes are why an Integrale generally looks more muscular than an HF 4WD even before you examine its mechanical details.

The 1988 car also gained a six-speed gearbox. Lancia’s history records a weight reduction of about 23 kg compared with the preceding version. That figure is a comparison with the immediately earlier model, not a universal weight claim for every Delta or every later Integrale variant; equipment and specification can vary between cars.
1989: the HF Integrale 16V
The next major step was the HF Integrale 16V in 1989. “16V” means four valves per cylinder, rather than the two-valve-per-cylinder arrangement implied by the earlier engine description. The larger engine dimensions required a distinctive bonnet hump. That raised section is one of the easiest visual clues for separating a 16V from the original 1988 HF Integrale, although a badge or body panel alone should not be treated as proof of a car’s exact specification.
HF 4WD versus HF Integrale: the differences at a glance
| Point | Delta HF 4WD | Delta HF Integrale |
|---|---|---|
| Position in the sequence | First all-wheel-drive Delta, presented in 1986 | Next all-wheel-drive performance version, introduced in 1988 |
| Bodywork | Earlier Delta body shape | Widened wheel arches for wider tires and larger front air intakes |
| Gearbox | The cited Lancia history does not state a predecessor gearbox specification | Six-speed gearbox |
| Weight | The cited Lancia history does not state a comparison figure for the HF 4WD | About 23 kg lighter than the preceding version, according to Lancia’s historical account |
| Name | HF 4WD | HF Integrale, the later designation in the all-wheel-drive HF lineage |
| Later development | Predecessor to the Integrale | Developed further as the 1989 HF Integrale 16V |
The table also shows what cannot be concluded from the available historical specification. The predecessor’s exact gearbox and weight are not stated in the cited passage, so it would be misleading to fill those cells with estimates or figures from an unrelated edition.
What changed on the 1988 Integrale?
Wider arches and tires
The widened wheel arches are functional as well as visual. Lancia describes them as providing room for wider tires. This is the clearest exterior distinction between the earlier HF 4WD body and the 1988 Integrale body. On a surviving car, look for the broader arch treatment rather than assuming that an HF badge alone proves Integrale specification.

Larger front air intakes
The Integrale’s front end received larger air intakes. Together with the arches, they create the familiar broad-shouldered appearance associated with the model. These openings are part of the factory distinction identified in Lancia’s history, not merely aftermarket styling cues.
Six-speed transmission
A six-speed gearbox is one of the mechanical changes Lancia explicitly identifies for the Integrale. The available historical comparison does not provide the HF 4WD’s gearbox details, so the useful conclusion is simply that the 1988 successor was specified with six forward ratios. A seller’s description should still be checked against documentation for the individual car.
Approximately 23 kg less mass
Lancia reports that the HF Integrale reduced weight by about 23 kg versus the preceding version. “About” matters: it is a rounded historical figure, and it describes the change between those versions rather than a guaranteed curb weight for every market or equipment configuration. It does, however, show that the Integrale revision involved more than cosmetic widening.
Why the HF Integrale became inseparable from rally history
The badge gained much of its reputation through the Delta’s World Rally Championship results. Lancia’s manufacturer history reports six World Rally Constructors’ Championships across 1987–1991 for the Delta HF generations. It separately reports four World Rally Drivers’ Championships in 1987–1989 and 1991. These are different championship categories: the first counts manufacturers’ titles, while the second counts drivers’ titles. The drivers’ total is four, not six, and the listed years do not include 1990.

The same Lancia account records 46 overall victories in rallies valid for the various World Championship editions. That is a tally of rally wins across the relevant Delta HF generations, not a claim that every victory came from one single body style or one model year. The historical source is Lancia/Stellantis Media: “Lancia synonymous with rally in the world.”
Constructors’ and drivers’ titles are not interchangeable
A constructors’ championship rewards the manufacturer’s results, while a drivers’ championship rewards an individual driver’s season. Because the Delta HF family appears in both counts, casual summaries sometimes collapse them into one number. Keeping the categories separate is important when explaining what the HF Integrale name represents: it belongs to a family with a documented competition record, but the six and four figures describe different achievements.
How to identify an HF Integrale when viewing a car
Names in advertisements are not always consistent, especially when a later car has been modified or a seller uses “Integrale” as a general nickname. Use the historical sequence and physical clues together.

- Inspect the body. The 1988 Integrale should have the widened arches and larger front air intakes identified by Lancia. An earlier-looking body may indicate an HF 4WD or a body conversion rather than an untouched Integrale.
- Check the transmission description. The Integrale specification is associated with a six-speed gearbox. Ask for photographs of the transmission identification and service records instead of relying only on an advert headline.
- Look at the bonnet. A bonnet hump is the characteristic clue for the 1989 HF Integrale 16V because its four-valve-per-cylinder engine needed additional space. Its absence points away from the factory 16V specification, although replacement panels and modifications can complicate identification.
- Match the paperwork to the physical car. Registration documents, chassis records and period invoices are more reliable than a badge fitted after the fact. The HF name explains the lineage; it does not authenticate an individual vehicle.
Common misunderstandings about the name
“HF” does not mean four-wheel drive
HF expands to “High Fidelity” and carries the Hi.Fi. Club association. Four-wheel drive is represented by the 4WD designation on the earlier car and by the Integrale name in the later sequence. Treating HF as a drivetrain abbreviation obscures the history of the badge.

The Integrale is not the same as the HF 4WD
The two cars are related, but the 1988 Integrale followed the 1986 HF 4WD and introduced identifiable body and mechanical changes. Calling every early all-wheel-drive Delta an Integrale erases that distinction.
“16V” is not another name for the first Integrale
The 16V is the 1989 development. Its four-valve-per-cylinder engine and bonnet hump distinguish it from the original 1988 HF Integrale. A discussion that uses “Integrale” broadly should still identify whether it means the 1988 version or the 16V evolution.
Rally success does not provide a production specification
Championship totals explain why the name is famous, but they do not establish the equipment, condition or authenticity of a road car. A competition result is context, not a substitute for a vehicle inspection.

What the badge tells you—and what it does not
On a correctly identified Delta, “HF Integrale” tells you that the car belongs to Lancia’s HF performance lineage and to the post-HF 4WD all-wheel-drive evolution introduced in 1988. It points toward the widened body, larger front intakes, six-speed gearbox and approximately 23 kg reduction recorded for that version.
It does not, by itself, tell you the exact model year, whether the car is a 16V, which market specification it carries, whether its parts remain original or how much it is worth today. The 1989 16V needs separate identification, and an individual car’s history must be verified independently.
Bottom line: decode the name in two parts
Read the badge from left to right. HF means “High Fidelity,” the historic Lancia designation linked to the Hi.Fi. Club. Integrale identifies the 1988 all-wheel-drive successor to the 1986 Delta HF 4WD. Its widened arches, larger air intakes, six-speed gearbox and roughly 23 kg weight reduction mark the engineering step forward. The 1989 HF Integrale 16V then added four valves per cylinder and the bonnet hump needed for the larger engine dimensions.
That distinction keeps the timeline, the hardware and the rally record accurate: HF 4WD is the starting point, HF Integrale is the 1988 evolution, and HF Integrale 16V is the 1989 development.
