In practical terms, the jury assessed the design submitted for consideration: its research process, material choices, usability intentions, sustainability considerations and market positioning. An award does not constitute a long-term ownership study, a laboratory comparison with competing vehicles or a guarantee that every feature is fitted to every J5 EV sold worldwide.

The jury wording reproduced in Jaecoo Australia’s announcement says:
“The Jury recognises the Jaecoo J5 EV for its research-led approach that addresses a genuine gap in the Australian electric vehicle market through pet-friendly design innovation. The project demonstrates strong consideration of user needs, with world-first TÜV SÜD certified cabin materials that deliver durability and practicality for modern households. The Jury commends the composed exterior design and thoughtful material selection that supports comfort and usability, while the accessible price point broadens EV ownership without compromising quality. The integration of sustainability considerations and the clean, uncluttered interior further reinforce the vehicle’s responsible design intent and practical appeal for Australian families.”
That is the jury assessment as published by the manufacturer, not an independent test result. It explains why the interior received recognition, but it should not be read as evidence of superior reliability, resale value, crash performance, charging performance or customer satisfaction.

Why the cabin was designed around pets
The award project says the team began with consumer research and treated pets as part of the household rather than as an occasional passenger. The design brief focused on muddy paws, scratching, shedding and the repeated loading and unloading that can make a family vehicle difficult to keep clean. Pet-related accessories were intended to fit into the vehicle’s broader design system instead of appearing as improvised add-ons.

The project reports that 75% of surveyed respondents said pets influence major household decisions, including vehicle choice. The award page does not state the survey sample, field dates or methodology, so this should be treated as a finding from that project’s survey, not as a representative statistic for all Australian households.
Jaecoo Australia’s Chief Commercial Officer, Roy Munoz, described the intent this way in the announcement: “The J5 EV started with a simple question: what do families actually need from an electric car? For a lot of households, the answer includes their furry friends. So, we built a cabin that can handle muddy paws and everyday life, at a price that puts EV ownership within reach of more people.” His statement describes the product’s design goal; it is not an independent usability finding.
Interior features identified by the award project
Summit seat material and clean-up
For the Summit model, the project describes a synthetic seat material certified by TÜV SÜD. The project materials characterize it as scratch-resistant, antibacterial and easy to clean. Those properties are attributed to the submitted design information; the award itself does not report a separate, long-term abrasion, stain-removal or hygiene test conducted by the writer.

For a pet owner, the significance is straightforward: a smooth, wipeable surface can reduce the effort required after wet walks or spilled food, while resistance to scratching addresses a common source of interior wear. Buyers should still inspect the actual upholstery, seams, bolsters and rear-seat surfaces on the local vehicle, because the project specifically identifies the Summit model and trim names can differ between markets.

Storage arranged for daily items
The project lists more than 20 storage spaces. Examples include a phone tray, two cupholders and concealed storage inside the centre armrest. A high storage count matters only if the spaces are reachable, sized for the objects people carry and shaped so items do not move around while driving. During a showroom visit, check whether a phone fits with its case, whether bottles can be removed without blocking adjacent controls and whether the covered compartment is large enough for charging cables or pet leads.
Boot capacity that changes with the rear seats
The award entry gives two cargo figures:

Litres alone do not show how easily a dog crate, stroller, shopping bags or a hard-sided carrier will fit. Bring the largest item you routinely carry and measure it against the opening, not just the internal volume quoted in a specification sheet.
Front-window glass intended to reduce cabin noise
The project describes “silent glass” for the front windows as a way to create a quieter cabin. This is a design feature and an intended benefit, not a published decibel measurement. Road surface, tyres, weather, speed and the acoustic contribution of the rear seats can all change the experience. A proper evaluation requires a drive on the roads you use, with the ventilation system and audio switched off for part of the route.

The project lists an 8.8-inch instrument display and a 13.2-inch central display, together with voice command. It also names configurable ambient lighting, a fixed panoramic roof and heated and ventilated front seats. The award material does not establish that every item is standard across every trim or market. Confirm the local specification, software language, phone-integration method and whether the comfort functions are available on the exact vehicle you are considering.

How those choices could affect everyday usability
Living with a dog or other pet
The strongest design story is the attempt to treat pet use as a normal operating condition. Seat material selected for cleaning and scratch resistance can make frequent trips less stressful, while integrated storage can keep leads, wipes and bowls from occupying the main seating area. The design does not eliminate the need for a correctly secured harness, crate or barrier; safe restraint remains the owner’s responsibility.
Check the rear-seat angle, door opening and floor height before purchase. A large dog may need more headroom than the cargo volume suggests, and a carrier that fits through the boot opening may still be awkward to lift over the sill. Look for exposed fasteners, narrow gaps and fabric sections that could trap hair, because these details often determine cleaning time more than a headline material description.
Family errands and mixed cargo
The combination of multiple small compartments and a configurable boot is aimed at households that alternate between passengers, groceries, sports equipment and pet gear. The useful question is not how many litres are available in isolation, but whether the cabin lets you separate fragile items, wet equipment and loose objects without blocking visibility or access to the charging cable.
Ask the dealer to demonstrate the rear-seat release from the boot and from the passenger area. Check whether the release handles are obvious, whether the load floor can be lifted with one hand and whether the rear seats return to their original position without needing a second person.

Using the displays and controls
A large central screen can present navigation, vehicle settings and media in one place, while a separate instrument display keeps speed and driving information in the driver’s line of sight. Voice command may reduce the number of taps required for common actions, but usefulness depends on recognition accuracy, supported functions and whether the system works with local accents and connected phones.
During a test drive, set the climate temperature, change the audio source, adjust a driving setting and answer a navigation prompt. Note whether the car allows those actions through physical controls, the screen or voice, and whether the driver can complete them without looking away from the road for too long.
Comfort over longer trips
Heated and ventilated front seats can help in extreme temperatures, and a fixed panoramic roof can increase the sense of space. Neither feature automatically proves that the seating position, cushioning or glare control will suit every driver. Test the steering-wheel reach, thigh support, lumbar adjustment and rear-seat comfort for the people who will use the vehicle most often.
What the award does not prove
- It does not establish that the J5 EV is more usable than a particular competing SUV.
- It does not provide independent measurements of cabin noise, material life, stain resistance or antibacterial performance.
- It does not show how the interior will look after years of claws, sand, moisture and ultraviolet exposure.
- It does not confirm that the listed displays, roof, lighting or seat ventilation are standard on every trim or available in every country.
- It does not turn the 75% survey result into a population-wide Australian statistic because the project page gives no sample or methodology.
- It does not replace a physical inspection, a test drive or confirmation of the local warranty and service arrangements.
A practical inspection checklist for buyers
- Confirm the exact specification. Ask for the local trim name, equipment list and build date. Match the seat material, screens, roof and comfort features to the vehicle being offered, not to a general brochure image.
- Inspect the surfaces pets will touch. Run a hand over the rear bench, door cards and boot lining. Look for seams that could collect hair, exposed plastics likely to scratch and floor coverings that can be removed for cleaning.
- Test the storage layout with your own objects. Bring a phone, drink bottle, sunglasses, charging lead and pet supplies. Open each compartment while seated and check that lids and cupholders do not interfere with the gear selector or armrest.
- Measure the cargo opening. Take the dimensions of your crate, stroller or largest regular load. Check the sill height, wheel-arch intrusion and the shape of the folded-seat area rather than relying only on the litre figures.
- Drive on representative roads. Include coarse asphalt, a motorway and a residential street. Listen with the windows closed and the audio off, then repeat with a passenger in the rear. This gives you a more useful impression than the phrase “silent glass” alone.
- Operate the interface before committing. Pair a phone, try voice commands, adjust climate settings and use the navigation system. Verify that the functions you use most are available without navigating through distracting menus.
- Check restraint and cleaning arrangements. Confirm where a harness clips, how a barrier would mount and whether a removable cover or mat is approved for the vehicle. Do not assume a third-party accessory fits simply because it is advertised for a similar SUV.
- Record what is included in writing. Ask the dealer to identify standard equipment, optional equipment and market-specific exclusions on the order or quote. This prevents an award-project feature from being mistaken for a guaranteed specification.
How to compare the J5 EV fairly with another vehicle
If you are cross-shopping, compare observable evidence rather than award prestige. Use the same pet carrier and luggage in both vehicles; measure the boot opening and loading height; inspect seat materials and trim applicability; test the screens and voice controls on the same route; and listen for noise under comparable conditions. Ask each manufacturer for the basis of any durability, cleaning or acoustic claim.
The available award sources do not provide a like-for-like competitor test or independent long-term ownership data. A conclusion that the J5 EV is “better” should therefore be limited to the specific criteria you can verify, such as easier access to a storage bin or a more suitable cargo shape for your equipment.
Bottom line
The Good Design Award gives the J5 EV’s interior a clear design narrative: research-led decisions aimed at ordinary households, with pet use treated as a central requirement. The Summit’s described seat material, extensive storage, two-stage boot capacity, quieter front-window glass and listed comfort technology make that narrative concrete. The award is meaningful evidence of how the submitted cabin was conceived and judged, but it is not a substitute for checking the local trim, testing the vehicle yourself or waiting for independent evidence of long-term durability and comparative usability.
