The headline “94% of Germans won’t buy Tesla” overstates what the figure can show. It came from a non-representative t-online reader poll: on March 11, 2025, more than 94% of respondents said they would not buy a Tesla. T-online later reported that the result had swung dramatically, disclosed suspected manipulation and stopped the poll.
What did the 94% figure measure?
T-online asked readers, “Würden Sie noch einen Tesla kaufen?”—“Would you still buy a Tesla?” In the result reported for March 11, 2025, more than 94% selected “Auf gar keinen Fall” (“Under no circumstances”), while about 3% selected “Ja, kein Problem” (“Yes, no problem”). T-online said roughly 100,000 readers had voted during the poll’s first week. t-online’s March 18 report described the early result.
Those numbers describe people who chose to take part in an online reader poll. T-online later explicitly said the poll was not representative. It did not establish that respondents were all in Germany, were all considering a car purchase, or reflected the views of German adults or car buyers generally.
Why did the poll’s result change?
By March 18, 2025, the displayed result was very different: about 70% of respondents said they would buy a Tesla, while 29.2% selected “Under no circumstances.” T-online’s March 19 follow-up said 467,500 votes had been cast by 9 p.m. on March 18. The March 11 and March 18 figures are snapshots from a rapidly changing poll, not one consistent estimate. T-online’s follow-up documented the shift.

T-online said an internal review found that 253,000 votes came from two IP addresses in the United States, suggesting possible manipulation. The outlet stopped the poll and removed it from the relevant articles. That is t-online’s reported finding and suspicion; it does not identify who cast those votes or establish that every vote associated with those addresses came from a unique person.
Does the poll show that Germans have turned against Tesla?
No. A voluntary reader poll cannot establish national buying intentions, and the later swing and suspected manipulation make these particular results especially unsuitable for that purpose. The 94% figure should be described as the March 11 result among respondents to a non-representative t-online poll—not as the share of Germans who would reject Tesla.

The poll also cannot explain why people chose their answers. T-online’s March 18 article discussed competition and Elon Musk’s political activity as context for Tesla’s difficulties, but the poll did not isolate either factor or demonstrate that it caused respondents’ choices. Nor does the poll measure current demand: its reported results are from March 2025.

A defensible estimate of national buying intent would require a representative survey with a defined population, transparent recruitment and methods for checking responses. Actual demand is a separate question that calls for reliable, dated vehicle-registration or sales data. The t-online poll supplies neither a representative population estimate nor a reliable measure of current Tesla sales in Germany.
