The 2026 Ram 1500’s 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Ram lists a maximum tow rating of 11,320 pounds and a maximum payload of 1,650 pounds for specified configurations, but those two headline numbers do not describe every HEMI-equipped truck or apply simultaneously to one vehicle. Axle ratio, drivetrain, cab, bed, GVWR, options, passengers, cargo and trailer tongue weight determine what your particular Ram 1500 can legally and safely carry or tow.
What the 5.7-liter HEMI contributes
The HEMI is an engine option available on select 2026 Ram 1500 models. Ram lists the 5.7-liter V8 at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. Those are engine-output specifications, not a standalone towing or payload rating. A truck with the same engine can have a different certified capacity because its axle ratio, four-wheel-drive hardware, cab, bed, suspension, tires, cooling equipment, hitch and GVWR may differ.

That distinction matters when shopping used or comparing dealer listings. “5.7 HEMI” identifies the powertrain, while the door-jamb label, build sheet and the applicable Ram capacity table identify the limits of the finished truck. Treat the engine as one part of the capability package rather than as a guarantee that every HEMI Ram 1500 can tow the maximum advertised trailer.

The 11,320-pound and 1,650-pound numbers are manufacturer-published guide figures, not independent test results. To use either figure, your truck must match the relevant row in the 2026 table. If the axle ratio, cab, bed, drivetrain or other required equipment does not match, the number may not apply.
How much can a Ram 1500 HEMI tow?
There is no single answer for all HEMI-equipped 2026 Ram 1500s. The correct answer is the maximum trailer weight shown for your exact configuration, and then the lowest limit imposed by the truck, hitch, receiver, trailer or law. Ram’s table shows HEMI towing rows that vary with axle ratio and other configuration details; its listed high point is 11,320 pounds for a specified 3.92 axle-ratio configuration.
Identify the row that applies to your truck
- Confirm the model year and engine. Verify that the truck is a 2026 Ram 1500 with the 5.7-liter HEMI, rather than a different engine or model year whose table can differ.
- Read the axle ratio. The 3.92 ratio appears in the guide’s highest HEMI towing configuration, but a truck with another ratio must use that ratio’s row.
- Record drivetrain. A 4×2 and a 4×4 can have different curb weights and ratings. Use the row for the actual drivetrain.
- Match cab and bed. Quad Cab, Crew Cab and bed-length combinations change weight distribution and available ratings. Do not substitute a similar-looking body style.
- Check the truck’s GVWR and equipment. The certification label and build information establish the truck’s own weight limits. Factory options and dealer-installed equipment consume capacity.
- Compare all hardware limits. The receiver, hitch ball mount, tires, axles and trailer must each be rated for the intended load. The smallest rating controls.
If you cannot match every required detail to a table row, do not use 11,320 pounds as an assumed capacity. Ask a Ram dealer for the vehicle-specific build data and consult the current owner’s manual and hitch instructions.

What is the payload of a Ram 1500 with the HEMI?
Ram lists a maximum HEMI payload of 1,650 pounds for a specified 2026 configuration. Payload is the total weight carried by the truck itself: occupants, luggage, tools, accessories, cargo in the bed and the trailer’s tongue weight. It is not simply the amount of cargo you can place in the bed after attaching a trailer.
Use the payload label, not the brochure maximum
Look for the certification label on the driver-side door or door pillar. It states the allowable combined weight of occupants and cargo for that individual truck as built. A heavily optioned truck can have less available payload than a lightly equipped truck of the same trim and engine because options add weight before anyone gets inside.
Ram’s 2026 capability information cautions that options, equipment, passengers and cargo affect payload and towing weights. That warning includes items such as a topper, winch, running boards, larger wheels, toolboxes, recovery gear and aftermarket suspension parts. Weigh the loaded truck when accuracy matters instead of relying on an online listing or a generic trim-level number.

Why tow rating and payload are different limits
Towing capacity describes the trailer weight the truck is rated to pull under specified conditions. Payload describes the weight placed on the truck. A trailer uses both limits at once: its tongue presses down on the hitch and becomes part of the truck’s payload, while the trailer’s total weight counts against the tow rating.

In practical terms, you cannot take the maximum tow figure and the maximum payload figure, combine them and assume one truck can achieve both at the same time. The vehicle’s available payload must still cover the tongue weight and everything else in the cab and bed.
An illustrative loading calculation
Suppose a trailer weighs 8,000 pounds and places 800 pounds on the hitch. That 800 pounds is an example based on a 10-percent tongue-weight assumption; actual tongue weight depends on trailer design and loading. If the truck’s door label allows 1,650 pounds of occupants and cargo, 800 pounds of tongue weight leaves 850 pounds for people, luggage and truck-mounted equipment. Four 180-pound adults would use 720 pounds, leaving only 130 pounds for other cargo. This arithmetic is illustrative, not a substitute for the ratings of your truck and trailer.

Axle ratings matter as well. A load can remain below the truck’s total GVWR while overloading the rear axle if too much weight is concentrated behind it. Verify the front and rear GAWR on the certification label and distribute trailer cargo according to the trailer manufacturer’s instructions.

Ram’s 2024 guide uses a 10-percent conventional-hitch tongue-weight assumption in its chart. That is a chart convention, not a universal instruction that every trailer must impose exactly 10 percent. Your trailer maker, hitch instructions and local requirements may specify a different range.

Because this is prior-year guidance, verify the current 2026 owner’s manual, receiver label and trailer instructions before installing or selecting equipment. A weight-distributing hitch does not increase the truck’s GVWR, axle ratings or the receiver’s maximum rating; it helps manage weight distribution when the complete setup is approved for it.

Before connecting a heavy trailer
- Confirm the receiver’s maximum trailer and tongue ratings in the required hitch mode.
- Use a ball mount, coupler and safety chains rated for the trailer’s actual loaded weight.
- Set the trailer brake controller and verify that all trailer lights and breakaway equipment work.
- Load the trailer so its tongue weight stays within the trailer maker’s recommended range, with heavy cargo secured low and near the axle group.
- Recheck tire pressures, wheel-lug torque and cargo tie-downs before every trip.
Does the HEMI increase the Ram 1500’s towing capacity?
The HEMI can provide the power and torque needed for higher-rated configurations, but installing or choosing the engine does not automatically raise a truck’s certified capacity. Capacity is certified for the entire configuration. A HEMI Ram 1500 with a different axle ratio, 4×4 system, cab, bed or option package can have a lower rating than the configuration associated with the 11,320-pound guide maximum.
Engine output also does not override a lower payload rating. You may have enough horsepower to move a trailer yet exceed the truck’s GVWR, rear-axle rating, tire capacity or receiver rating. Those are separate constraints and remain binding even when acceleration feels effortless.

A practical purchase checklist
- Write down the trailer’s loaded gross weight, not its empty shipping weight.
- Obtain the truck’s door-label payload and axle ratings before negotiating.
- Estimate tongue weight using the trailer maker’s guidance, then include passengers, fuel, tools and accessories.
- Confirm that the remaining payload covers tongue weight and that the trailer weight fits the exact Ram table row.
- Have the loaded combination weighed at a certified scale if the margin is small.
Common mistakes with HEMI towing numbers
- Using the 11,320-pound maximum for every HEMI. It belongs to a specified configuration, not to the engine in isolation.
- Treating 1,650 pounds as a universal payload. It is a maximum for a listed configuration; the door label governs your truck.
- Ignoring passengers and tongue weight. Both consume payload before bed cargo is added.
- Adding maximum tow and maximum payload together. Ram identifies these as mutually exclusive ratings in its 2024 guide.
- Assuming a weight-distributing hitch creates capacity. It can manage weight distribution when approved, but it cannot raise GVWR, axle or receiver limits.
- Relying on an empty trailer weight. Water, propane, batteries, gear and cargo can substantially increase the trailer’s actual weight.
What to verify for a specific 2026 truck
For a defensible answer, record the VIN or build sheet, engine, axle ratio, drivetrain, cab, bed, GVWR, front and rear GAWR, tire ratings, receiver rating and the door-label payload. Then compare those facts with the 2026 Ram towing table and the current owner’s manual. If the truck has been modified, include every permanent accessory and have the loaded combination weighed.
The HEMI’s 395 hp and 410 lb-ft explain why it is a useful towing powertrain, but the safe trailer and cargo limits come from the complete truck-and-trailer combination. Use the exact configuration row, keep tongue weight inside the available payload and let the lowest certified limit set your load.
