The thread does not provide a lease, payment record, calculation, or named source for the $1,251.66 figure, so it cannot establish that this was the car’s monthly cost.
Where the headline comes from
The wording comes from an AnandTech Forums thread started December 1, 2010. Its opening post says “Just kidding,” then raises allegations about a government-leased vehicle associated with then-Representative John Conyers of Michigan. The headline’s reference to taxpayers paying a specific monthly amount is therefore best read as a provocative forum title, not proof of a bill or lease rate.
What the forum post alleges
The thread says Conyers’s son used the vehicle over Thanksgiving, that it was left in downtown Detroit and broken into, and that $30,000 worth of government property was stolen. It also refers to the vehicle as a Cadillac Escalade. These are claims relayed in the forum discussion; the page does not independently document the vehicle, the circumstances, an inventory of missing property, or the loss amount.
What it says about Conyers and vehicle rules
A participant reproduces a statement attributed to Conyers: “I have just learned about the inappropriate use of a congressional vehicle by my son over the Thanksgiving holiday,” followed by, “I am sorry it happened and will make sure that it does not happen again.” The forum attributes the statement to Tuesday, but the original statement is not available in the source reviewed here.

The same post attributes this explanation to Kyle Anderson, described as a spokesman for the House’s administrative committee: “Family members are allowed to drive the cars, but only when shuttling representatives to official business.” The thread does not provide an official rule citation, so this should be treated as a quotation relayed by a forum participant rather than an independently confirmed description of the applicable vehicle policy.
What can—and cannot—be concluded about the cost
- Established: The $1,251.66 amount appears in the title of the 2010 forum thread.
- Not established: The thread supplies no payment record, lease document, calculation, or identified primary source tying that number to an actual monthly payment.
- Also unverified in this source: The claimed $30,000 loss, the vehicle-use details, and the Escalade identification.
As a result, the title cannot support a reliable claim about what taxpayers paid each month for the vehicle. Establishing the cost or confirming the reported events would require contemporaneous reporting or official records beyond this forum thread.
