Joby delivered its first aircraft to the UAE and flew it in Dubai in June 2025, but those flights were tests—not passenger service. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) says the commercial launch is targeted for the end of 2026. That is a goal, not confirmation that the service has opened.
Has Joby delivered an aircraft to Dubai?
Yes. Joby announced on June 30, 2025, that it had delivered its first aircraft to the UAE and completed piloted flights in Dubai, including vertical takeoff and landing followed by wingborne flight. The company described the work as part of commercial market readiness and said it anticipated carrying its first passengers in 2026. Joby’s announcement does not mean passenger operations began at that time.

When will Joby air taxis launch in Dubai?
The latest surfaced RTA update puts the target at the end of 2026. The authority describes Dubai as progressing toward commercial launch; it does not confirm that the service is already operating or guarantee that the target date will be met. Regulatory qualification is still part of the work. The RTA says the UAE is pursuing qualification using FAA-validated data, while the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) remains engaged with the FAA during the final stages of U.S. type certification. The RTA station update and its project and flight update describe progress, not completed approval for passenger service.
What has happened so far?
| Milestone | Status and significance |
|---|---|
| February 12, 2024: project agreement | The RTA, Joby, GCAA, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA), and Skyports Infrastructure set out a framework for establishing the service. The RTA’s role includes governance and transport integration; Joby is the intended aircraft operator; Skyports is responsible for station infrastructure. |
| June 30, 2025: first aircraft delivery and Dubai flights | Joby reported delivery of its first aircraft to the UAE and piloted flights in Dubai as market-readiness work. |
| November 2025: further piloted flight | The RTA reported a 17-minute point-to-point flight from Joby’s Margham test facility to Al Maktoum International Airport. |
| Summer flight campaign | The RTA reported 21 piloted flights during a campaign intended to check aircraft performance in desert heat. |
| DXB-area station and launch target | The RTA describes the station as completed and technically positioned to receive eVTOL flights, while targeting commercial launch by the end of 2026. |
The milestones show why “nears launch” needs qualification: aircraft delivery, piloted testing, and station readiness are meaningful steps, but they are not the same as regulatory clearance and scheduled passenger operations.

Where will Dubai’s air taxis fly from?
The planned initial network has four stations, near Dubai International Airport (DXB), Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, and Palm Jumeirah, according to the RTA’s station update. These are planned locations; the announcement does not provide a passenger timetable or confirm that all four are accepting passengers.
What is planned at the DXB station?
The RTA describes the DXB-area facility as a four-storey, 3,100-square-metre station with two landing pads and charging infrastructure. Its stated capacity is up to 170,000 passengers annually. That is a facility capacity figure, not a ridership forecast or evidence of actual passenger numbers. The RTA identifies Skyports Infrastructure as the station infrastructure partner.

Published estimates differ slightly. The RTA gives about 10 minutes from DXB to Palm Jumeirah, while Joby’s June 30, 2025 announcement gives about 12 minutes. Both compare the flight with roughly 45 minutes by car. These are attributed route-time estimates, not a published operating schedule; actual service times have not been established in the cited announcements. RTA estimate; Joby estimate.
What aircraft is Joby bringing to Dubai?
The aircraft is Joby’s S4, an electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) design. In its February 2024 announcement, the RTA described it as a six-rotor aircraft designed to carry a pilot and four passengers, with a stated maximum distance of 161 km and top speed of 321 km/h. These are published design specifications, not measured performance on a commercial Dubai route. The RTA’s description is in its February 2024 project announcement.
Who is responsible for the service?
- Joby Aviation: aircraft developer and intended air taxi operator, with UAE responsibilities that include aircraft operations and passenger management.
- Dubai’s RTA: governance of the service and integration with the wider transport network.
- Skyports Infrastructure: design, development, and operation of the stations.
- GCAA and DCAA: aviation authorities involved in the regulatory and qualification framework.
The arrangement was announced by the RTA on February 12, 2024, in its agreement announcement. The responsibilities describe the project structure; they do not mean every operational approval has been granted.
