As reported on October 12, 2026, Tesla paused new Canadian orders for the Model 3 Premium, reportedly because of import-quota constraints, with a possible reopening in March 2027. That does not establish a pause across every Model 3 trim, cancel existing orders, or remove every inventory car. Canadian shoppers should verify their exact trim and province on Tesla’s live order and inventory pages before changing plans.
Can I still order a Tesla Model 3 in Canada?
The answer depends on the configuration. Tesla Canada’s public site still displays the Model 3 and an order link, while Tesla-focused outlets TeslaNorth and Drive Tesla Canada reported that new orders for the Model 3 Premium had been paused on October 12, 2026.

The available reporting identifies the Premium version specifically. It does not establish whether the Performance trim is affected, whether previously placed orders are being held, or whether cars already in Canadian inventory can still be purchased. Treat “Model 3 orders” as shorthand for the reported Premium-order pause, not proof that every Model 3 transaction is unavailable.
What to check before assuming you cannot buy one
- Open Tesla Canada’s live Model 3 order page and select the exact trim, drivetrain and delivery location you want.
- Check Tesla’s new-vehicle inventory for nearby locations; inventory availability can differ from the ability to place a factory order.
- Check pre-owned inventory if a used vehicle meets your requirements.
- Contact or visit a Tesla store if the online page gives an unclear result. Tesla Support Canada says a buyer can place an order online or visit a Tesla store.
A visible order button is not conclusive by itself. Confirm that the configuration can actually be submitted, that a delivery location is accepted and that the resulting page provides a current price and delivery estimate.

Why did Tesla pause Model 3 Premium orders?
The reported explanation is an import quota. TeslaNorth attributed a banner on Tesla’s Canadian design page to Tesla’s import quota and reported an expected reopening in March 2027. Drive Tesla Canada also reported the pause and the quota explanation. The captured material does not include Tesla’s own banner text, so the explanation should be treated as reporting attributed to those outlets rather than as an independently verified Tesla statement.
March 2027 is an expectation, not a guaranteed reopening date. A quota position, production plan, regulatory decision or vehicle allocation could change before then. Do not make a non-refundable move, sell your current vehicle or let another purchase deadline expire solely because that month was mentioned.
How Canada’s China-origin EV quota works
Global Affairs Canada says Canada’s first-year quota for electric vehicles originating in China is 49,000 vehicles. The measure took effect on March 1, 2026. For the first six months, eligible original equipment manufacturers could obtain shipment-specific import permits on a first-come, first-served basis while the government consulted on a longer-term allocation and administration system beginning September 1.
Quota imports carry a 6.1% tariff rate. The federal consultation material also describes annual quota growth of 6.5% and a rising reserved share in later years for electric vehicles with a Free On Board price of $35,000 or less. Those policy features describe Canada’s framework; they are not a Tesla-specific allocation or a current Canadian retail-price rule for the Model 3.

Does the 49,000-vehicle figure tell us Tesla’s remaining capacity?
No. The 49,000 vehicles are a national quota, not Tesla’s personal allotment. The sources available for this article do not publish Tesla’s allocation, how many quota vehicles Tesla has used, or how much capacity remains for the company.
Drive Tesla Canada reported that government data appeared to show capacity remaining nationally. That observation does not resolve Tesla’s position: national capacity could remain while Tesla’s own allocation, permit timing, shipment schedule or internal inventory plan prevents new Premium orders. Conversely, a reported company pause does not prove that the entire Canadian quota has been exhausted.
For a buyer, the practical consequence is to separate three questions: whether Canada has unused national quota, whether Tesla can import the configuration you selected, and whether Tesla has a vehicle available for your delivery location. Public quota totals answer only the first question.

Can I still buy a Model 3 from inventory?
Possibly, but availability must be checked in real time. Tesla Support Canada directs shoppers seeking more immediate delivery to local inventory. An inventory vehicle may have been imported or allocated before the reported factory-order pause, yet the available sources do not verify that any particular Model 3 Premium configuration remains in stock.
Search by location rather than relying on a national result. Record the stock number or vehicle identifier, trim, drivetrain, colour, wheel choice and listed price before contacting the store. Confirm that the car is physically available for sale in your province, not merely shown as an incoming or otherwise restricted listing.
Questions to ask about an inventory vehicle
- Is the vehicle new or pre-owned, and what is its model year?
- Does its configuration match the Premium version you intended to factory-order?
- Is the displayed price current for your province, and which taxes or official fees are excluded?
- What delivery date can the store currently support, rather than the generic estimate shown for factory orders?
- Would selecting this car change any financing, registration or trade-in assumptions in your purchase plan?
These checks matter because an inventory car can solve an order-queue problem while still being a materially different vehicle from the configuration you priced online.

What price should Canadian buyers use?
Tesla’s Canada homepage showed a $42,132 starting price for a Model 3 Premium RWD available in Ontario. That display was current as of May 1, 2026, and the page warned that prices may change. It was an Ontario figure, not a live quote for every province or every configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe same listing said the displayed amount included freight, pre-delivery inspection, taxes and an air-conditioning/tire fee, while excluding HST and licensing fees. Because those inclusions and exclusions appeared on a dated, location-specific page, use them as context rather than as a final out-the-door total. Recheck the current configuration page and the purchase documents for your own province.
Do not infer that the import quota changes the retail price by exactly 6.1%. The 6.1% figure is the tariff rate for quota imports described by Global Affairs Canada; it is not a published Tesla price adjustment, and the sources do not show how Tesla’s logistics, allocation or pricing decisions pass through to a customer’s bill.

How reliable is a Tesla delivery date during the pause?
Tesla’s purchase agreement says estimated delivery dates are estimates. Actual timing can depend on the selected configuration and manufacturing availability. It also says taxes and official fees depend on the buyer’s location and are calculated closer to delivery.
That language applies even when an online order can be submitted. A date shown during checkout is therefore a planning estimate, not a guaranteed handover appointment. If you need a vehicle by a fixed date, compare the date Tesla can confirm for a specific inventory car with the less certain timing of a future Premium factory order.

What about an order I already placed?
The reported material does not establish that existing orders are cancelled, delayed, reconfigured or protected from the pause. It also does not establish whether the Performance trim is affected. Check the order record for your exact vehicle and delivery location, then ask Tesla for the current status of that order rather than applying a general headline to it.
Keep copies of the configuration, price sheet, estimated delivery window and any messages in your Tesla account. If the configuration, price or estimated date changes, evaluate the revised documents; Tesla’s agreement makes clear that final taxes and official fees are location-dependent and that delivery timing can change with configuration and manufacturing availability.
Should you wait for orders to reopen or buy something else?
There is no universal answer because the pause creates a timing decision, not a published comparison with a particular competing model. Use the same vehicle specification and the same ownership horizon when comparing options.
Waiting is more defensible when
- You specifically need the Premium configuration and can tolerate an uncertain date beyond the reported March 2027 estimate.
- Your current vehicle remains reliable and you do not face a fixed replacement deadline.
- You are willing to monitor Tesla’s order page and inventory rather than treating the reported month as a promise.
Buying an available vehicle is more defensible when
- You need transportation by a firm date.
- A confirmed inventory vehicle matches the equipment and range you actually require.
- The complete provincial price, including applicable taxes, licensing and official fees, fits your budget.
Use these four comparison tests
- Confirmed availability: Is the exact trim and equipment physically available, or only theoretically orderable?
- Timing risk: What date is supported for the specific vehicle, and what part remains an estimate?
- Total cost: Compare the final provincial price, not a national starting figure or a pre-tax headline.
- Configuration equivalence: Make sure the vehicles have the same drivetrain, equipment and condition before calling one a substitute for another.
A practical checklist for Canadian shoppers
- Check the live Tesla Canada Model 3 page for your exact trim and province.
- Check new and pre-owned local inventory the same day; listings can change independently of factory-order status.
- Save the displayed configuration and price, including the date and delivery location.
- Ask Tesla whether your selected Premium configuration, or an existing order, is affected; do not assume the reported pause applies to every trim.
- Request the current estimated delivery window for the actual vehicle you would buy.
- Review the purchase agreement and final price sheet for location-specific taxes and official fees.
- If waiting, set a reminder to recheck the order page before March 2027 and again when your purchase deadline approaches.
What Canadian buyers should take away
The reported event is a targeted interruption of new Model 3 Premium orders, attributed to Tesla’s import-quota position, not confirmed proof that every Model 3 is unavailable. Canada’s 49,000-vehicle China-origin EV quota and 6.1% tariff explain the regulatory backdrop but do not reveal Tesla’s allocation or guarantee when orders will return. Your most reliable next step is configuration-specific: verify the live order page, inspect local inventory, and base any purchase decision on the final provincial price and the delivery timing Tesla gives for that particular vehicle.
