Depending on the vehicle, hardware, software version and European market, the functions can help with steering, route navigation, lane changes and parking. The driver must continue watching the road, monitoring the system and remaining ready to take over immediately.
Tesla’s terminology and a country’s legal approval are separate questions. A feature can appear in Tesla’s product information while a particular vehicle configuration still depends on national approval, type approval and local availability.

What Tesla means by “Assisted Driving”
Tesla uses Assisted Driving as an umbrella label for software that performs parts of the driving task while a human remains in control. It is not the name of one identical package fitted to every Tesla. Tesla says the available functions can vary with the market region, manufacture date, vehicle configuration, purchased options, vehicle hardware and software version.
On Tesla’s UK-facing Assisted Driving information page, the named tasks include:

- Steering assistance: helping keep the vehicle positioned in its lane or on a planned path.
- Navigation assistance: following a route and making driving decisions within the system’s permitted scope.
- Lane changes: assisting with a lane change when the vehicle and market support that function.
- Parking: helping manoeuvre into or out of a parking space where the relevant feature is enabled.
Those capabilities do not transfer responsibility from the driver to the car. Tesla’s European owner-manual language says the driver must stay alert, watch the road and be prepared to take immediate action. The manual also states: “None of these features make Model S fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.”
Why the word “assisted” matters
In ordinary language, “assisted” means the system contributes to a task while the person remains responsible for the result. That is also the logic used in Europe’s regulatory framework for driver-control assistance.
UN Regulation 171 defines Driver Control Assistance Systems as support for the driver rather than a complete takeover of driving. Paragraph 1 says: “ADAS are aimed to assist the drivers, who always remain responsible for vehicle control and shall permanently monitor the environment and vehicle/system performance.” The wording has two practical consequences:
- You must supervise both the road and the system’s behaviour.
- You must be able to intervene whenever the system makes an incorrect, incomplete or unsafe decision.
The European Commission places this type of system in the level 2 assisted-driving category. Level 2 is distinct from level 3 automated driving and level 4 fully driverless operation. A Tesla carrying out several tasks at once can therefore still be a supervised assistance system rather than an autonomous vehicle.
Is Tesla Full Self-Driving actually self-driving in Europe?
Tesla uses the software name Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on some support pages. The parenthetical word is significant: Supervised describes the operating condition. It does not mean the vehicle can legally or safely be left to drive without an attentive human.

The name does not establish that every Tesla has the same functions, that every function works on every road, or that the package is approved in every European country. Before relying on a feature, check the exact vehicle, its installed hardware, the current software release and the country in which it will be used.
What the driver must do while assistance is active
Keep continuous attention on the road
Do not treat an engaged system as permission to read, use a phone, watch a screen or turn around to deal with passengers. The required supervision is continuous, not occasional. Looking away for a moment can leave too little time to correct a missed hazard, an unexpected road user or a system error.

Monitor the vehicle and the environment
Supervision includes checking that the vehicle is following the intended lane and route, responding appropriately to traffic signs and signals, and noticing hazards the sensors or software may not classify correctly. Construction zones, temporary markings, unusual junctions, poor weather, cyclists, motorcycles and emergency scenes can all demand earlier human intervention.
Be ready to take over immediately
Your hands, seating position and attention must allow an immediate steering, braking or acceleration input. A takeover alert is not a scheduled hand-off; it is a warning that the system may have reached a limit or detected a condition requiring you to act.
Do not test the boundaries on public roads
Never test whether the vehicle can manage a bend, junction, roundabout or lane change by deliberately withholding help. If the system behaves unexpectedly, disengage it safely and resume manual control.

Can you take your hands off the wheel?
No. The Assisted Driving name does not authorise hands-off driving. Tesla’s systems may use steering-wheel input and, on equipped vehicles, driver-monitoring signals to check that supervision is taking place. Those checks are not a replacement for looking at the road or maintaining control.
A driver-monitoring warning can escalate if you ignore prompts. The safest response is to keep an appropriate grip, watch the road ahead and take over smoothly when the system requests it or when conditions become uncertain. Do not attach devices, weights or other objects intended to defeat a supervision check; doing so undermines the safety function and can create a false impression that the system is operating within its design limits.
Availability in Europe: product listing versus legal approval
Tesla’s UK-facing Assisted Driving page says availability is limited to selected markets and lists these European countries: the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Croatia. Tesla’s subscription support information separately warns that eligibility depends on vehicle configuration and location, and that not all features are available in all markets.
This is a product-availability statement, not a complete legal determination for every model, road or use. A country may appear on a general list while a particular vehicle is ineligible, a function is disabled or local operating conditions restrict use.
The Netherlands Vehicle Authority (RDW) issued a dated explanation on 10 April 2026 saying it had granted type approval for Tesla’s FSD Supervised driver-assistance system. RDW said that approval was valid at that time only in the Netherlands and that further application and a vote by EU member states were needed for EU-wide admission. That statement predates October 2026; the material available for this article does not establish whether those later steps were completed.

| Question | What the available evidence establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Is the feature listed by Tesla? | Tesla lists Assisted Driving functions and selected European markets on its UK-facing page. | That every Tesla in a listed country has every function. |
| Is the vehicle technically eligible? | Tesla says configuration, location, hardware and software affect eligibility. | Eligibility for a different model, build date or software version. |
| Is it approved nationally? | RDW reported Dutch type approval on 10 April 2026. | Current approval status in every other European country. |
| Is it autonomous? | UN Regulation 171 and Tesla’s manual treat the driver as responsible. | Permission to stop supervising or leave the driver’s seat. |
How to check whether your Tesla has a feature
- Identify the exact car. Record the model, manufacture date, trim, installed computer or hardware generation and any options shown in the vehicle’s software menus.
- Check the car’s software version. Open the vehicle’s software screen and note the installed release. Feature behaviour can change with an update, so do not rely on a demonstration from another version.
- Read the in-car description and owner manual. Confirm what the feature does, where it can operate and what supervision actions Tesla requires.
- Check the location setting and country rules. Tesla’s subscription support information says location affects eligibility. A feature enabled in one country may be unavailable or restricted after crossing a border.
- Confirm the activation state. Look for the feature’s status in the vehicle interface rather than assuming that a package name means every function is active.
- Use the current Tesla support information for your market. Treat a generic country list as an initial indication, then verify the exact vehicle and function before subscribing or planning a trip.
Who is responsible if the system makes a mistake?
The driver remains responsible for vehicle control while an Assisted Driving function is active. RDW described FSD Supervised this way on 10 April 2026: “A vehicle with FSD Supervised is not self-driving. It is a driver controlled assistance system, which means that the driver remains responsible and must always remain in control.”
That responsibility means you must intervene before a foreseeable hazard becomes a collision, even if the software created the situation. Keep your attention on the road, follow traffic law and use the system only within the conditions described for your vehicle. An insurance, police or court assessment after an incident can involve facts that are separate from Tesla’s marketing name, including driver behaviour, road conditions, vehicle data and applicable national law.

Names alone do not tell you how a system behaves. Compare the underlying functions and operating obligations instead.
| Comparison point | What to establish | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tasks | Does the system steer, control speed, navigate, change lanes or park? | A broader task list does not remove the need for supervision. |
| Supervision | Must the driver watch the road and remain ready to intervene? | Continuous supervision distinguishes assistance from unattended driving. |
| Vehicle requirements | Which model, hardware generation, options and software version are required? | Two cars with similar names may have different capabilities. |
| Geography and approval | Is the function available and legally admitted in the country of use? | Product availability and national approval are separate checks. |
| Evidence for safety claims | Who measured the result, where, when and against what comparison? | A marketing figure may not predict a European driver’s outcome. |
“Autopilot” is another Tesla label for driver assistance, not a statement that the vehicle is autonomous. “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” similarly describes a software offering that operates under supervision. The useful question is always: what can this specific vehicle do on this specific road, and what must I do while it is active?

Practical situations drivers commonly misunderstand
Joining a motorway
Assistance may help with steering or a lane change if the vehicle and market support it, but you remain responsible for checking mirrors, blind spots, speed, traffic gaps and signs. Take over if the entry lane ends, markings are unclear or traffic behaves unpredictably.
Roadworks and temporary markings
Temporary lanes, cones and shifted lines can confuse automated perception. Reduce speed, monitor the path closely and disengage assistance when the normal lane structure is unclear.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Urban junctions and cyclists
Complex intersections, parked vehicles and vulnerable road users require active observation. Do not assume that a route display or steering input means the system has identified every person, bicycle or right-of-way rule.
Parking manoeuvres
A parking function can control parts of a low-speed manoeuvre, but you still need to watch for pedestrians, posts, kerbs, doors and vehicles entering the path. Be ready to stop immediately.
What to verify before paying for or using a subscription
- Whether the subscription is offered in your country and for your vehicle.
- Which individual functions are included rather than assuming the package name covers all features.
- Whether the required hardware is installed and supported by the current software.
- What driver-monitoring and takeover requirements apply.
- Whether cross-border travel changes availability or legal permission.
- Whether the feature description is current for your model and software release.
A subscription changes access to software; it does not change the driver’s legal duty to supervise the vehicle. Nor does a package name guarantee that a function will operate on every road, in every weather condition or in every country.
The bottom line for European Tesla drivers
Read “Assisted Driving” literally: Tesla is assisting a driver. Steering, navigation, lane changes and parking can be useful capabilities, but they remain supervised functions. Keep watching the road, stay ready to take over and treat every availability or approval claim as specific to your vehicle, software version and country. Tesla’s country list, the RDW’s dated Dutch approval statement and Europe’s driver-control rules should be checked together—not substituted for one another.
