Short answer: Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can attempt many demanding driving tasks, including following a route, changing lanes, negotiating turns and intersections, entering and leaving highways, and parking. It is still a driver-assistance system, not an autonomous vehicle. Tesla requires a fully attentive driver who can take over immediately, and warns that the car can make unexpected mistakes even when conditions look normal.
What Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is
Full Self-Driving (Supervised), usually shortened to FSD (Supervised), is Tesla’s name for a suite of driver-assistance functions. When enabled on a compatible vehicle, Tesla says the system can control steering, acceleration and braking for portions of a trip while attempting to follow a destination route.

The word “Supervised” is the critical part of the name. Tesla’s own documentation says the feature does not make a vehicle fully autonomous and does not replace the driver. The person in the driver’s seat remains responsible for monitoring the road, deciding whether each maneuver is safe and taking control whenever necessary. Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual puts it this way: “Always remember that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) (also known as Autosteer on City Streets) does not make Model Y autonomous and requires a fully attentive driver who is ready to take immediate action at all times.”
That means FSD can perform substantial parts of a drive, but it is not permission to sleep, read, use a phone, or treat the vehicle as a robot taxi. The driver’s legal and practical duty to operate the vehicle safely does not change because the software is steering or braking.

What Tesla says FSD can attempt
Tesla’s current support description lists a broad set of driving tasks. These are intended functions, not guarantees that every maneuver will be completed correctly on every road. The exact feature set can differ by vehicle and market.

These capabilities are Tesla’s description of what FSD (Supervised) is designed to attempt. They should not be read as a promise of reliable completion in every neighborhood, weather condition, construction layout or traffic interaction. Tesla’s support page specifically notes that availability and behavior vary by vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim and model year.
Why “supervised” changes the answer
FSD can automate control inputs, but it does not transfer responsibility away from the driver. Tesla expects the driver to pay attention to the road and remain able to respond without delay. The system may request driver attention, but a prompt is not a substitute for continuous observation.

Tesla’s Model Y manual warns drivers not to assume when the vehicle will stop or proceed at an intersection. It says the driver must decide whether stopping or continuing is safe and appropriate. A green light, a navigation instruction or the vehicle’s initial movement does not guarantee that crossing traffic, pedestrians or an unusual road layout have been handled correctly.

The same principle applies when the vehicle appears to be driving smoothly. A quiet residential street can still contain a blocked lane, a cyclist emerging from behind a parked car or a temporary sign that the system has not interpreted as expected. Supervision means watching for those situations before the software commits to a maneuver, not merely waiting for an alert.
Situations where Tesla warns intervention may be needed
Tesla’s Model S FSD limitations guidance gives examples of conditions that can reduce performance or require immediate driver action. The list is illustrative rather than exhaustive.

Tesla also states that Model S “may quickly and suddenly make unexpected maneuvers or mistakes that require immediate driver intervention.” That warning matters even when the road appears ordinary. A driver who is looking away, reaching for a device or mentally treating the trip as autonomous may not have enough time to correct the car.

It does not make the car autonomous
Tesla’s definition is unambiguous: FSD (Supervised) does not turn the vehicle into a fully autonomous car. The driver must remain attentive and ready to take immediate action. Calling the vehicle “self-driving” without that qualification creates a misleading impression about responsibility and capability.

It does not guarantee a safe or correct decision
The feature can select an inappropriate speed, lane, gap or path. It can misread a temporary layout, fail to anticipate another road user or react unexpectedly. Tesla’s manuals describe only some of the circumstances in which intervention may be required; the examples are not a complete catalog of failures.
It does not work identically on every Tesla
A feature shown in one owner’s vehicle may be unavailable or behave differently in another. Tesla says hardware, software version, region, model, trim, model year and vehicle configuration all affect availability and operation. The Model S “About Self-Driving” guidance and other manuals also caution that a vehicle might not be equipped with FSD (Supervised) or might not operate exactly as described.
Before relying on a specific function, check the documentation and controls for the exact vehicle, software release and country. Do not infer that a menu, parking behavior or road capability shown online applies to every model or year.

Using FSD responsibly is less about memorizing a list of supported maneuvers than maintaining a disciplined takeover posture.

- Confirm compatibility. Verify that the vehicle actually has FSD (Supervised), that the relevant software is installed and that the feature is available in your region and configuration.
- Set up before moving. Adjust the seat, mirrors and route while stopped. Keep your hands and attention available for driving rather than for a secondary task.
- Scan beyond the vehicle’s immediate path. Look through intersections, around parked vehicles and toward merging traffic for hazards the system may not anticipate.
- Expect ordinary-looking roads to produce errors. Stay especially alert around vulnerable road users, temporary markings, narrow clearances and unusual right-of-way situations.
- Take over early. If the planned maneuver looks wrong, do not wait for the system to correct itself or for a warning. Apply the appropriate steering, braking or other control immediately.
- Stop using the feature when conditions exceed your confidence. Poor visibility, confusing construction or a road layout you cannot clearly evaluate is a reason to resume manual control.
Do not use a device intended to defeat the vehicle’s driver-monitoring or occupancy-detection systems. Tesla’s manuals warn against attempts to circumvent those safeguards.

On its support page, Tesla reports “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions,” citing its Vehicle Safety Report. Tesla does not state the comparison year on that page, and the material does not provide the study period, control group or detailed methodology needed to independently evaluate the comparison. Those numbers should therefore be treated as Tesla’s company claims, not as independently established findings.
A safety statistic also cannot remove the supervision requirement. Even if a fleet-level comparison is favorable, an individual drive can still involve a missed hazard or an unexpected maneuver. The relevant question for a driver is whether they can continuously monitor the road and intervene competently, not whether an aggregate company figure guarantees a particular trip.

Is Tesla Full Self-Driving really self-driving?
In the ordinary meaning of “self-driving”—a vehicle that can take responsibility for the trip without an attentive human—no. Tesla itself says FSD (Supervised) is not autonomous and requires a driver who is attentive and ready to act. In the narrower sense of software that can perform many steering, braking and navigation tasks, it can automate a substantial portion of a drive on supported vehicles and roads.

The most accurate description is supervised driver assistance with a wide task set. It may handle route-following, turns, lane changes, highway transitions, roundabouts, object avoidance, parking and summoning functions, but the human remains the fallback and the decision-maker. That distinction is not a legal footnote; it determines how the vehicle must be used every second it is active.
Bottom line for owners and shoppers
FSD (Supervised) can reduce the amount of routine steering and pedal work on a compatible Tesla, and it can attempt complex maneuvers that go well beyond conventional lane keeping. Its limits are equally important: performance varies by vehicle and market, difficult interactions can require immediate intervention, visibility and construction can degrade results, and Tesla warns that unexpected mistakes can occur without warning.
If you use or evaluate the feature, judge it by the supervision it demands rather than by its name. Read the manual for the exact vehicle, verify which functions are actually available, keep your attention on the road and be prepared to take control at any moment.
