There is no single spark plug or gap that fits every lawn mower. The correct choice depends on the engine, so find the engine model and code, then match them to the engine maker’s operator’s manual or official parts chart. A plug that threads into the engine is not necessarily the right plug.
How to find the right spark plug for your mower
- Identify the engine. Look for its model and code, then use those details—not just the mower’s brand—to find the matching operator’s manual or parts chart. The mower manufacturer’s support guidance may point to the relevant specifications; for example, Husqvarna directs riding-mower owners to the manual’s product specifications.
- Match the specified plug. Check the plug type or part number listed for that engine. Briggs & Stratton’s chart includes different plug applications and, in some cases, date or engine-family restrictions. Verify those details before buying.
- Check the gap specification. The gap is the distance between the spark plug’s center and ground electrodes. Use a feeler gauge or spark plug gap tool to check it against the value specified for your engine.
Briggs & Stratton warns that a plug can screw into an engine and still be incorrect: “Although several different spark plugs may screw into the engine, using the incorrect one will result in performance problems and possible internal engine damage.” Its chart, updated April 6, 2026, lists .030 inches for several applications, but also lists other values and model restrictions. That figure is not a universal mower setting. Consult the Briggs & Stratton spark plug chart only when it matches your engine.
Why the spark plug gap is engine-specific
A plug’s gap affects how it sparks, but the required setting is determined by the engine and plug application. Husqvarna advises: “Always use the recommended spark plug type and gap setting for your specific lawn mower.” Find that setting in the matching manual or official chart rather than relying on a common value found online.
Some plugs have platinum, iridium, or twin-tip fine electrodes that can be damaged if adjusted. Before changing a gap, check the plug and engine maker’s instructions. If adjustment is not permitted, do not try to force the electrodes into specification; confirm that the plug itself is the correct one.

When to inspect or replace the plug
Symptoms that justify an inspection
Low power, hard starting, and poor idling are reasons to inspect a spark plug, according to Husqvarna. Dirt or damage can contribute to poor running, but those symptoms do not prove that the plug is the cause. Check the plug and use the engine maker’s troubleshooting guidance before replacing parts.
Replacement intervals vary by manufacturer
Follow the maintenance schedule for your engine. The manufacturers’ recommendations below are examples, not a universal interval:

How to inspect or change a mower spark plug safely
- Check the engine manual for its removal, installation, and tightening instructions.
- Disconnect the spark plug lead and clear debris from around the plug before removing it.
- Use a spark plug socket or wrench to remove the plug. Check its condition and verify its part number and gap against the engine specification.
- If installing a replacement, use the specified plug and follow the engine maker’s tightening instructions. Do not guess at the tightening setting.
- Reconnect the lead and follow the manual’s instructions for returning the mower to service.
Briggs & Stratton’s spark plug replacement guidance covers disconnection, clearing debris, and the tools used. For Husqvarna gap guidance, see its spark plug gap instructions.

- Engine model and code, not only the mower make or model.
- The specified spark plug type or part number.
- The specified electrode gap and any date-code or engine-family restriction in the chart.
- Whether the plug has fine electrodes that should not be regapped.
Briggs & Stratton’s spark plug and gap chart and plug identification guidance can help identify applications for its engines. If your engine is from another maker, use that manufacturer’s manual or parts chart instead.
