SpaceX and Tesla’s planned Terafab is a semiconductor manufacturing initiative, not a car or battery factory. SpaceX says it is intended to bring chip design, logic- and memory-chip fabrication, and advanced packaging together to produce computing hardware for Tesla robots and vehicles and SpaceX’s orbital computing infrastructure. Its stated goal of one terawatt of annual compute production capacity is a long-term target—not output from an operating factory.
What will Terafab make?
Terafab is intended to make semiconductors and packaged computing hardware. In a June 5, 2026 filing, SpaceX described a manufacturing scope spanning chip design, fabrication of logic and memory chips, and advanced packaging. The filing does not identify specific chip models or give a product catalogue. SpaceX’s SEC filing describes a framework for future development rather than a completed production program.
Logic and memory chips
Logic chips carry out computing tasks; memory chips store data used by those tasks. Advanced packaging brings chips and related components together into finished hardware. Taken together, the stated scope covers several stages of making computing products, rather than only assembling vehicles or batteries.
Computing capacity is the stated output goal
SpaceX named a long-term goal of one terawatt of annual compute production capacity. That is a company target, not a measurement of current production, a confirmed plant capacity, or evidence that chips are already being made at that scale. The filing does not explain the target as a number of chips or finished devices.

Who would use the chips?
SpaceX describes two broad intended uses: computing at the edge, including inference tasks in Tesla products, and computing infrastructure in space for SpaceX. These are planned applications, not confirmation that Terafab chips are commercially shipping or installed in those products.
Tesla robots and vehicles
The companies describe edge-computing and inference chips primarily for Tesla’s Optimus robots and vehicles. SpaceX’s public update also identifies Optimus and self-driving Cybercabs as intended applications. Inference is the process of running a trained AI model to produce outputs, such as interpreting sensor input or selecting an action.

Tesla’s second-quarter 2026 filing says the company is expanding its manufacturing scope to include semiconductor and solar fabrication, while acknowledging uncertainty around manufacturing plans. That supports the company’s broader interest in semiconductor production; it does not establish that Terafab is built or supplying chips. Tesla’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 does not, by itself, confirm a completed Terafab facility.
SpaceX’s orbital computing infrastructure
SpaceX says the project is also intended to supply chips optimized for orbital compute infrastructure, including planned space-based data centers. The company’s update describes high-power chips for that purpose. This states an intended design use; it does not establish that the data centers or Terafab products are in operation. SpaceX’s Terafab update outlines the proposed applications.

Is Terafab already being built, and where?
The available company disclosures do not establish a confirmed full-facility site, construction start, production start, or production ramp. SpaceX says the companies have a general framework for future development, but project-specific timelines, milestones, and capital expenditures remain undetermined. As the filing puts it: “Any specific projects undertaken pursuant to this framework will be subject to separate negotiations and agreements (including any development timelines, milestones and capital expenditures) and have not yet been determined.”
Tesla’s Giga Texas page documents engineering and manufacturing activity at that campus, but does not confirm Giga Texas as the site of the full Terafab facility. Tesla’s Giga Texas page is facility context, not a Terafab site announcement.

Will Terafab replace outside chip suppliers?
No such replacement is established. SpaceX says it expects to continue obtaining a significant portion of its compute hardware from third-party suppliers. Terafab is therefore described as an additional manufacturing effort, not a commitment to end external sourcing.
