MotoGP will add a separate 15-minute Sprint qualifying session on Fridays from 2027. It will set the grid for Saturday’s Sprint only; Saturday’s Grand Prix qualifying will continue to determine the grid for Sunday’s race. The result is two qualifying processes and two separate race grids.
What is MotoGP’s new Sprint qualifying session?
It is a 15-minute Friday session, open to all riders, that will determine the starting order for Saturday’s Sprint. MotoGP announced the 2027 format as confirmed by the Grand Prix Commission. The session does not set the Sunday Grand Prix grid.
How the 2027 MotoGP weekend is scheduled
| Day | Sessions | What they determine |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | FP1: 45 minutes; FP2: 30 minutes; Sprint qualifying: 15 minutes, with all riders | Sprint qualifying sets Saturday’s Sprint grid. |
| Saturday | FP3: 20 minutes; Grand Prix Q1: 15 minutes, with all riders; Grand Prix Q2: 15 minutes, with the top 12 from Q1; then the Sprint | Grand Prix Q1 and Q2 set Sunday’s Grand Prix grid. The Sprint uses Friday’s qualifying order. |
| Sunday | Moto3 and Moto2 races precede the MotoGP Grand Prix. A 10-minute pitlane opening provides time for multiple sighting laps before the race. | The MotoGP Grand Prix starts from the grid set by Saturday’s Grand Prix qualifying. |
These are MotoGP’s published schedule specifications for the announced 2027 format, not measured results from a performance study.
How the two qualifying sessions differ
| Sprint qualifying | Grand Prix qualifying | |
|---|---|---|
| When | Friday | Saturday |
| Duration | 15 minutes | Q1 and Q2 are 15 minutes each |
| Who takes part | All riders | All riders start in Q1; the top 12 advance to Q2 |
| Grid set | Saturday Sprint | Sunday Grand Prix |
What changes from the current Sprint format?
Under MotoGP’s existing Sprint explainer, Saturday qualifying sets the starting positions for both the Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix, while the Sprint result does not affect the Sunday grid. In the announced 2027 arrangement, Friday Sprint qualifying sets a dedicated Sprint grid, and Saturday’s Grand Prix Q1 and Q2 separately establish the Sunday grid. The qualifying result for each race therefore comes from its own session.

When does the new format begin?
The separate Sprint qualifying session is announced for 2027. MotoGP’s announcement surfaced on 7 October 2026; its URL uses an older dated path, but the article text describes the 2027 format and says Grand Prix Commission decisions confirm it. As with any announced sporting format, later official amendments could change the schedule.
