At $23,500 Canadian, Would You Buy This 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton W12?

A listed 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton W12 pairs a 420-hp engine and extensive luxury equipment with 224,000 km. The asking price is intriguing, but the car’s records and inspection should decide the deal.

Maybe—but only after a specialist inspection and a close look at its service history. AutoTrader.ca surfaced a Canadian listing for a 2005 four-seat Volkswagen Phaeton W12 at $23,500 CAD with 224,000 km. Those figures describe a listing snapshot, not a confirmed sale, appraisal, or verified match to the specific car in the headline. The Phaeton’s equipment and power make a striking case for its original luxury ambitions; they do not tell us whether this particular high-mileage example is a sound buy.

What does $23,500 CAD buy?

The price and mileage come from an AutoTrader.ca listing surfaced in 2026 for a 2005 Phaeton 4 Sitzer. The listing snapshot does not establish the car’s present availability, condition, sale price, or identity as the exact vehicle described in the headline. Treat the asking price as a prompt to investigate, not as a market valuation.

For context, Consumer Guide Auto listed the 2005 W12 sedan at $96,100 U.S., effective March 11, 2005, and separately noted a $3,000 gas-guzzler tax. That is historical U.S. pricing when new, not a measure of what a Canadian example is worth today. It does, however, show how far upmarket Volkswagen positioned the Phaeton.

Why was the Phaeton a luxury car?

Volkswagen’s North American 2005 brochure specifies a 6.0-litre W12 producing 420 hp at 6,000 rpm, paired with a five-speed automatic. The Canadian guide also lists permanent 4Motion all-wheel drive with a Torsen centre differential and adjustable air suspension. The resulting proposition was a large, powerful sedan built around comfort as much as performance.

Cabin and comfort equipment

The brochure describes four-zone Climatronic climate control, leather seating, and W12-standard 18-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat and 16-way adjustment for the front passenger seat. AutoTrader.ca’s Canadian guide lists additional W12 equipment including infrared/heat-reflecting glass, a power-opening trunk, rear climate controls, walnut trim, a 12-speaker audio system, massage-capable power front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. Equipment can vary; confirm what is actually present and working in the car being considered.

The brochure’s line, “It’s the most Volkswagen you can get without a prescription,” is Volkswagen’s own tongue-in-cheek marketing—not an independent assessment. The underlying point is easier to verify: the W12 combined a high-output engine, all-wheel drive, adjustable suspension, and extensive comfort features in one sedan.

Four seats or five?

AutoTrader.ca says the Phaeton could be configured for five passengers or optioned as a four-passenger car with a rear console. The listing’s “4 Sitzer” description indicates a four-seat configuration, but check the individual car rather than assuming every Phaeton has the same rear layout.

Keep the horsepower figures in their markets

For a North American 2005 Phaeton W12, Volkswagen’s brochure gives 420 hp. Volkswagen España’s September 12, 2005 announcement describes a later European update that raised output from 420 to 450 metric horsepower and torque from 550 to 560 Nm. That European update is not evidence that a North American 2005 car has the later specification. Check the vehicle’s market, build details, and documentation before quoting figures for an individual car.

What should you check before buying?

The listing and model specifications cannot establish the condition, maintenance record, or likely ownership costs of this particular car. At 224,000 km, make your decision on the actual vehicle’s documentation and inspection rather than the equipment list or original sticker price.

  1. Match the car to its records. Review service invoices and maintenance history, and verify that the car’s identity, market, and stated configuration agree with its documentation.
  2. Arrange an inspection by a shop familiar with the Phaeton. Ask for a written assessment of the engine, transmission, all-wheel-drive system, adjustable air suspension, and comfort and climate-control equipment. The inspection should report findings on this car; complexity alone is not proof of a particular fault or failure rate.
  3. Test the equipment the seller says is included. Check the seats and their adjustments, heating and massage functions where fitted, rear climate controls, trunk operation, audio system, and other advertised features. Confirm four- or five-seat configuration in person.
  4. Confirm wheel and tire fitment before budgeting for tires. Consumer Guide lists 255/45HR18 tires for the W12, but a particular car may have different wheels. Read its tire placard and verify the fitted wheel size before ordering replacements.
  5. Compare the asking price with the inspection findings and records. Neither the historical U.S. new-car price nor one Canadian listing establishes fair value for this example.

So, would you buy it?

The Phaeton W12’s documented specification makes the offer tempting: a 420-hp North American W12, permanent all-wheel drive, adjustable air suspension, and a cabin with serious comfort equipment. But the price and mileage alone cannot tell you whether this example deserves your money. I’d consider it only if its records are convincing, the features check out, and an inspection by a Phaeton-qualified specialist supports the asking price. Without those checks, the luxury is a promise—not evidence of a good purchase.
