The McLaren F1 LM was a five-car commemorative road-car series, created to celebrate the F1 GTR’s victory at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was distinct from both the standard F1 road car and the competition GTR—but the available official histories do not establish a full set of LM-specific technical differences, so exact power, weight and equipment claims should be treated cautiously.
What the F1 LM was—and what it commemorated
McLaren’s F1 LM was a limited road-car series marking the F1 GTR’s success at Le Mans in 1995. The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), which organizes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, describes it as a “five-unit limited series” and links the number to the five GTRs that finished the race. ACO’s account of the F1 GTR at Le Mans is dated 1 March 2017.
The GTR won on McLaren’s first participation at Le Mans. Four other McLaren GTRs also finished, and three of the five finishers placed in the top five. The LM was therefore a road-going tribute to a particular racing achievement, not simply another name for the GTR.
How the LM fits beside the standard F1 and the GTR

The distinction matters: the GTR’s race-regulated power figure and competition equipment cannot be transferred to the LM just because the LM commemorated the GTR. Nor does the available evidence justify describing the LM as a street-legal GTR. The reliable comparison is about purpose and production context: the F1 was conceived as a road car, the GTR competed, and the LM was a small road-car series celebrating the GTR’s Le Mans result.

What can—and cannot—be said about technical differences
McLaren’s description of the standard F1’s carbon-fibre monocoque and the ACO’s account of its engine and seating layout help identify the F1 family, but they do not by themselves establish the LM’s precise specification. The official histories cited above do not provide a complete LM-specific comparison covering output, mass, aerodynamics or equipment.
That means popular numerical comparisons should be checked against a source that explicitly identifies the LM, rather than inferred from GTR regulations or standard-F1 figures. In particular, “below 600 bhp” is a figure McLaren Racing gives for the regulated GTR; it is not an established LM output figure in these sources.

Why the 1995 result made the LM significant
The F1 GTR’s first Le Mans appearance produced an overall win, four additional McLaren finishes and three cars among the top five. That result gave McLaren a clear occasion to mark with a special road-car series. McLaren Racing’s 2023 retrospective quotes F1 architect Gordon Murray on the demands of endurance racing: “Winning Le Mans is more difficult than winning an F1 championship. It’s a whole season’s worth of races without stopping.” McLaren Racing’s retrospective was published on 8 March 2023.

Think of the F1 LM as a rare, five-car road-car commemoration of the GTR’s 1995 Le Mans victory—not as the standard F1, and not as a GTR with a road-car label. The strongest documented differences are its commemorative purpose and limited production. A detailed technical specification comparison requires LM-specific evidence beyond the official histories cited here.
