The exact reference number has not been established by the sources reviewed.
What happened in Richard Hammond’s crash?
Hammond crashed in Switzerland in June 2017 while filming The Grand Tour. He was driving a Rimac Concept One during a hill-climb run when the car left the course and rolled down a hill. Contemporaneous reporting said he got out before the car caught fire and suffered a fractured knee. The Guardian’s report from 11 June 2017 quoted producer Andy Wilman saying, “If Richard had been a few seconds slower getting out, he would have been incinerated.” That is Wilman’s description of the danger, not a technical finding about the crash.
The Guardian’s initial report on 10 June 2017 also placed the accident during filming in Switzerland. The Rimac Concept One involved is the same car discussed by Hammond and Mate Rimac in a later Rimac Newsroom interview.
Submariner or Sea-Dweller?
The more consistent identification in specialist watch coverage is Sea-Dweller. Time+Tide’s headline calls the watch a Submariner, but its article body identifies it as a Sea-Dweller. Hodinkee likewise describes the returned crash-damaged Rolex as a Sea-Dweller. Hodinkee’s account and Time+Tide’s account support the Sea-Dweller identification at the model-family level; neither establishes the precise reference number.

What happened to the damaged Rolex?
Watch-publication accounts say the Rolex was recovered after the crash and later returned to Hammond. Time+Tide reports that it was presented on The Grand Tour in an acrylic display case. The outlet gives the inscription on the case as: “Made in Switzerland — Carefully perfected on 10th June 2017 by the British”. This wording is reported by Time+Tide; it is not independently confirmed here against the episode itself.
Time+Tide also reports details about the watch catching on something, Hammond undoing its clasp, and its recovery. Those are the publication’s account of the incident rather than independently verified first-person evidence in the sources cited here.
