The Honda CR500R earned its reputation through its place in motocross history, not a settled all-time ranking. Honda’s own retrospective identifies it as a major machine of the sport’s 1980s golden era: introduced in 1984 with an air-cooled engine, it moved to liquid cooling in 1985. Honda also says the CR500R’s styling inspired the CRF450R 50th Anniversary edition.
What made the Honda CR500R special?
The CR500R was Honda’s large-displacement motocross bike during a period when the sport and its machines were changing quickly. In its anniversary retrospective, Honda describes the model as one that tested the limits of chassis development and most riders’ abilities. Those are Honda’s historical characterizations, not comparative test results, but they help explain why the CR500R remains an emblematic name in discussions of 1980s motocross.
The model’s development also captures a clear technical turning point. Honda says the CR500R arrived in 1984 with air cooling and received a liquid-cooled engine for 1985. That change is a more firmly documented way to understand its early evolution than broad claims about how much faster or more powerful one year was than another.
How long was the CR500R made?
Secondary histories commonly give the production span as 1984–2001. Honda’s genuine-parts catalog identifies a 2001 CR500R and describes 2001 as the final year, while the full year-by-year span is not confirmed by an official Honda production-history archive in the sources cited here.

What is established about its specifications?
The name CR500R and Honda’s genuine-parts page identify the 1984 model as a 500 cc machine. A secondary reference lists 491 cc, but the exact displacement is not corroborated here by an opened Honda technical specification. Treat that precise figure as unverified unless you confirm it in a factory manual for the particular model year.

Horsepower, torque, weight, top speed and chassis figures also should not be treated as confirmed across the model’s full run on the basis of the available sources. Specifications can vary by year, and reliable comparison requires year-specific Honda documentation rather than a single set of figures applied to every CR500R.
What is the CR500R’s legacy?
Honda’s retrospective places the CR500R among the important machines of motocross’s 1980s golden era. Its most specific modern legacy claim is visual: Honda says the bike’s aesthetics inspired the CRF450R 50th Anniversary edition. That supports a styling connection, not a claim that the CRF450R is a direct engineering successor.

Choose factory documentation by model year and purpose. The available Helm listings cover different ranges, so a manual for a nearby year should not be assumed to match your bike.
