New cars shifted toward several automatically controlled designs: multi-speed torque-converter automatics, continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), and dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs). Strong hybrids generally use hybrid CVTs, while battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) usually use a single-speed reduction gear. Manuals still exist, but in a very small part of the new-car market.
The clearest current picture is the United States. In model-year 2024 production, eight-speed transmissions represented 33% of new vehicles, while non-hybrid CVTs and transmissions with nine or more speeds each accounted for more than 20%, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Those categories describe transmission designs across powertrains; they are not a one-for-one conversion from five-speed manuals.

There was no one-for-one replacement
A five-speed manual combines a fixed set of forward ratios with a driver-operated clutch and shift lever. The market did not replace that package with one universally preferred gearbox. Instead, manufacturers adopted different solutions for different engines, vehicle classes, emissions targets and powertrains.
In conventional gasoline and diesel cars, the most common substitutes are electronically controlled automatics with fixed gears, CVTs that vary the ratio continuously, and DCTs that automate a manual-like clutch arrangement. These systems all remove routine clutch-pedal and shift-lever work, but they do not behave the same way.

The word “replacement” can therefore mean several things. An eight-speed automatic replaced the manual option in some family cars; a CVT took its place in many economy vehicles; a DCT filled that role in some performance-oriented models; and an electric drivetrain made the question irrelevant by using one reduction ratio. The appropriate comparison depends on the vehicle’s powertrain and the market in which it is sold.
What U.S. production data show
The latest broad quantitative source is the EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report, which covers U.S. model-year 2024 production. Its transmission categories show how the center of gravity moved away from the six-speed format.

Eight-speed transmissions became the most common category in model year 2019. The decline in six-speed production does not mean every six-speed gearbox disappeared: it means the combined six-speed category became much less dominant as eight-, nine- and higher-speed automatics expanded.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) provides a longer historical perspective. Automatic transmissions accounted for 65% of U.S. light-duty vehicles produced in 1980 and more than 99% in 2022. The DOE says the 2022 figures were based on preliminary EPA data, so they are a useful earlier snapshot rather than a replacement for the EPA’s newer 2024 production figures. The same DOE account puts CVTs at about one quarter of light-duty-vehicle production in 2022.
How the main replacement designs work
Multi-speed torque-converter automatics
A conventional automatic uses a torque converter to connect the engine to the transmission and a set of fixed gear ratios selected by hydraulic and electronic controls. Modern units typically include a lockup clutch inside the torque converter. Once conditions allow, lockup reduces the slip and frictional losses that would otherwise occur between the engine and transmission.
Manufacturers added more ratios because a wider spread between the lowest and highest gears can keep the engine closer to an efficient or powerful operating range. Lower gears provide launch multiplication; higher gears reduce engine speed during steady cruising. Eight-speed and nine-or-more-speed categories grew as electronic controls, compact gearsets and improved shift calibration made additional ratios practical.

These transmissions also changed the performance comparison with a manual. The EPA reports that automatic transmissions became generally more efficient and could provide better performance than manuals in modern vehicles. That is a statement about broad technology trends, not a guarantee that every automatic beats every manual in fuel economy, response or durability.

A CVT does not normally move through a fixed sequence such as first, second and third gear. Instead, variable-diameter pulleys connected by a belt or chain alter the ratio continuously. The control system can hold the engine at a speed that suits acceleration, climbing or fuel economy while the vehicle speed changes.
The DOE attributes CVT efficiency potential to their expanded ratio range. A CVT can select a very low ratio for moving away from a stop and a very high ratio for cruising without the discrete steps required by a traditional gearbox. Drivers may notice a steady engine speed during hard acceleration rather than the rising-and-falling rev pattern of a stepped automatic.
“CVT” is a mechanism description, not a guarantee about driving feel or ownership experience. Hybrid CVTs use different system layouts from many non-hybrid CVTs, and a CVT’s calibration, engine pairing and control software matter as much as the label.
Dual-clutch transmissions
A DCT uses two clutches and two interleaved sets of gears. One clutch generally handles odd-numbered ratios and the other even-numbered ratios, allowing the next gear to be selected before the shift. The control system then swaps clutch engagement to complete the change quickly.
That internal arrangement resembles a manual transmission, but the driver does not operate the clutches in normal use. EPA describes DCTs as capable of quick shifts and able to avoid some of the resistance associated with a torque converter. They can therefore occupy a middle ground between a traditional automatic’s convenience and a manual-like mechanical layout.

There is an important data limitation: automakers’ submissions to the EPA do not explicitly identify DCTs as a separate category. Consequently, the EPA report does not provide a directly comparable DCT production share. A DCT may be present within broader transmission reporting, but its exact portion cannot be read from that table.
Why the market moved away from five-speed manuals
Efficiency came from the whole system, not simply from adding gears
The claim that manuals lost out because they had “too few gears” is incomplete. Automatics gained lockup torque converters, broader ratio ranges, improved controls and more effective shift strategies. CVTs widened the usable ratio range in a different way. These changes reduced the historical efficiency penalty associated with automatic transmissions.
The EPA also reports that automatic gear counts grew faster than manual gear counts and that the average automatic gear count passed the manual average in model year 2012. More ratios gave engineers additional opportunities to keep an engine near an efficient operating point while preserving acceleration.

An electronically controlled transmission can repeat the same shift timing, clutch pressure and torque management thousands of times. It can coordinate shifts with engine, turbocharger, traction-control and emissions systems. That consistency helps manufacturers meet fuel-economy and emissions requirements while delivering predictable acceleration.
This does not make a manual obsolete as a driving experience. It means the automatic can now satisfy several engineering goals at once: low cruising rpm, rapid acceleration, smooth launches and integration with the vehicle’s software. For many buyers, that combination outweighed the involvement of a clutch pedal.
Consumer demand and vehicle packaging reinforced the change
As automatic technology improved, the convenience advantage became easier to obtain without accepting a large fuel-economy penalty. A manufacturer could offer one automated transmission across a high-volume vehicle range instead of engineering separate manual controls, clutch hardware and calibration for a small group of buyers. The market result was a feedback loop: fewer manual versions meant fewer opportunities for buyers to choose one, while automatic versions received more development investment.

The powertrain now determines the answer
Strong hybrids
In model-year 2024 data, the EPA says strong hybrids most often used hybrid CVTs. In these systems, the engine and electric motor or motors can share propulsion duties, and the transmission’s operating strategy is designed around that interaction. A hybrid CVT is therefore not simply a conventional CVT with a battery added; its ratio control and power flow are part of the hybrid system.

Calling a hybrid CVT the replacement for a five-speed manual can be misleading. It is a solution for a different powertrain architecture, one optimized to blend engine operation, electric assistance and regenerative braking.
Battery-electric vehicles
BEVs generally use a single-speed reduction gear. Electric motors produce useful torque across a much wider speed range than combustion engines, so a multi-ratio gearbox is often unnecessary. A fixed reduction ratio can provide the required wheel torque and top speed with fewer moving parts and no conventional gear shifts.
The EPA notes a limited number of high-performance EVs with two-speed transmissions. Those exceptions show that “electric vehicles have one speed” is a useful generalization, not an absolute rule. Their transmission choices respond to performance targets and motor operating range rather than to the constraints of a gasoline engine.

EPA data place all manual transmissions below 1% of U.S. production from model year 2021 onward. That is a market-share statement, not a claim that manuals are unavailable everywhere or in every type of vehicle.
Manufacturers have continued to develop six-speed manuals for selected markets and enthusiast applications. In 2018, Toyota described a new six-speed manual as a response to global needs, particularly in Europe, and said its intelligent manual-transmission (iMT) system could adjust engine speed during shifts. That example demonstrates continued engineering investment at the time; it does not establish current global sales or availability.

A historical Volkswagen Jetta technical page illustrates another pattern: five- and six-speed manuals were listed alongside six- or seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearboxes, with the pairing dependent on the engine. The page distinguishes a seven-speed dry-clutch DSG from a six-speed wet-clutch DSG. This is evidence that automated transmissions often appeared beside manuals as an alternative, rather than instantly erasing them. It describes a historical Jetta offering and should not be read as a current lineup guide.
How to compare the choices in a real car
Transmission names can hide important differences. Use four separate questions rather than treating every automatic as interchangeable.

Do not infer fuel economy, reliability, repair cost or driving enjoyment from the number of gears alone. The evidence summarized here establishes the market shift and the operating principles, but it does not support a universal ranking of these designs for ownership value.

If you want a clutch pedal, begin with the vehicle list rather than assuming a five-speed manual is still the default alternative. Manual availability is now limited, and surviving examples may use six speeds or another ratio count. Verify the exact transmission for the engine and trim sold in your market.
If you are considering an automatic, identify the mechanism before comparing specifications. An eight-speed torque-converter automatic, a CVT and a DCT can all be described simply as “automatic,” yet they deliver different shift behavior and use different hardware. A hybrid CVT and a non-hybrid CVT should also be treated as distinct powertrain applications.
For an EV, expect a single-speed design in most cases. A two-speed unit is an exception associated with a limited number of high-performance models, not the normal configuration.
Finally, keep geography and date attached to every market claim. The strongest current numbers here describe U.S. production through model year 2024. They do not establish a worldwide transmission split. A manufacturer statement about a manual developed for global needs is an individual example, not a global market survey.

The bottom line
The five-speed manual was not replaced by one new gearbox. It was displaced by a family of automated solutions: increasingly common multi-speed automatics, widely used CVTs, selected DCTs, hybrid-specific CVT systems and, in most BEVs, single-speed reduction drives. In the United States, the EPA’s 2024 production data show eight-speeds leading at 33%, while non-hybrid CVTs and nine-or-more-speed transmissions each exceeded 20%; all manuals together were below 1%. The right comparison is therefore not “manual versus automatic,” but mechanism, ratio strategy, degree of driver control and powertrain considered together.
