Porsche says all-electric Boxster and Cayman models are expected to contribute to sales in their first full production year in 2028. Final electric-model specifications, prices, customer-delivery dates and market availability have not been published in the cited announcement, so owners must treat 2028 as a prospective planning point rather than a guaranteed handover date.
What Porsche actually changed
The change is a production and product-plan transition, not an announced end to support for cars already on the road. Porsche’s 2025 annual report records the discontinuation of combustion 718 Boxster and Cayman production in October 2025. The company reported 18,612 combined Boxster and Cayman deliveries worldwide in 2025, compared with 23,670 in 2024, a 21.4% decline that it attributed mainly to the model line being phased out.

Porsche’s third-quarter 2025 delivery report had already said the then-current 718 line would end production in the fourth quarter. That report also mentioned limited model availability associated with European Union cybersecurity regulations. Those are separate pieces of company-reported context: the material does not say that regulation alone caused the production decision.

In October 2026, Porsche described the next step in its sports-car strategy: “This will start with the all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman models, which are expected to support sales in their first full year of production in 2028.” The wording matters. “Expected” is a forward-looking corporate plan, not a confirmed showroom date, order-bank opening or delivery promise.

What the production end means if you own a combustion 718
Your car does not become unsupported overnight
Ending factory production changes the supply of new cars; it does not, by itself, cancel scheduled maintenance, warranty obligations that still apply, diagnostic work or parts ordering for vehicles already sold. The cited production and strategy announcements do not announce a blanket withdrawal of service or parts support for current Boxster and Cayman owners.
Support is still vehicle-specific. A 2005 Boxster, a 2018 718 Cayman and a late-production 2025 car do not necessarily share the same parts pipeline, software, corrosion exposure or specialist knowledge. A Porsche Centre or independent Porsche specialist will need the vehicle identification number, model year, engine and market specification to confirm fitment and availability.
New-car supply is now finite
There will be no further factory-built combustion 718 examples after the October 2025 discontinuation. Buyers who want a petrol Boxster or Cayman therefore shop from existing dealer inventory or the used market. Condition, service history and specification matter more than the production headline: the end of a model line does not establish that every car will appreciate, nor does it predict depreciation for an individual vehicle.

Do not infer a value guarantee
Porsche’s reported delivery totals describe vehicles handed over by Porsche AG, not used-car prices, registrations in a particular country or the size of the surviving fleet. They cannot support a claim that a combustion 718 is a guaranteed investment. A well-maintained example may be desirable to some buyers, but future value depends on mileage, maintenance, accident history, configuration, local taxes, market supply and broader economic conditions.
Will Porsche still service my Boxster or Cayman?
There is no evidence in the cited announcements of an immediate service cutoff. Routine work should continue through Porsche Centres and qualified independent specialists, subject to normal factors such as technician capability, diagnostic equipment and parts availability. Keep the maintenance schedule for your exact car and ask for a VIN-specific plan rather than relying on a generic internet interval.
Porsche’s United Kingdom 718 service schedule explicitly includes engine-oil and oil-filter replacement. That confirms the task as part of routine 718 maintenance, but it does not establish one oil grade, filter number or interval that fits every year, engine and market. Before buying consumables, verify the specification in the owner’s manual or with a Porsche Centre or specialist using your vehicle details.

How to arrange the next service
- Record the VIN, current mileage, model year, engine designation and country in which the car is registered.
- Review the last invoice and identify time-based items that may be due even if mileage is low.
- Ask a Porsche Centre or experienced independent specialist for a written scope that distinguishes scheduled maintenance from condition-based repairs.
- Confirm that any proposed oil, filter, brake, battery or software item is listed for your exact vehicle configuration.
- Keep invoices, diagnostic reports and replaced-part details; a complete history helps future troubleshooting and resale even when the model is no longer in production.
Can you still get parts?
Porsche has a continuing Classic pathway for some older generations. Porsche Classic’s United States model list names the Boxster 986 and 987 and the Cayman 987 among vehicles receiving genuine-parts support and specialist services. Porsche’s international Classic catalogue also lists the Boxster 986 and describes a genuine-parts distribution network.
Those pages establish support channels for the generations they name. They do not guarantee that every component is perpetually stocked, that every current-generation 718 is covered, or that delivery times and prices are identical worldwide. A trim panel, control module, air-conditioning component and engine part can have very different availability.
Use a part-by-part check
- Give the supplier the VIN, not only “718 Boxster” or “Cayman.”
- Ask whether the part is new genuine stock, remanufactured, used or superseded by a revised number.
- Confirm software or coding requirements for electronic modules before ordering.
- For body and interior parts, verify colour, side, body style and options such as Sport Chrono or adaptive systems.
- Obtain the return policy for special-order items and ask whether a back-order has an estimated release date.
If a Classic page does not name your generation or component, describe coverage as unconfirmed rather than assuming that Porsche has made a universal lifetime commitment.

The figures combine both body styles, so they do not show whether Boxster or Cayman demand was stronger. They also do not reveal country-level allocation, dealer inventory, private registrations or the number of cars remaining in the fleet. Use them to understand the phase-out, not to set an asking price for your car.

Porsche’s stated planning point is the first full production year: 2028. That does not specify the first customer delivery in every country. A model could begin production late in a preceding year, launch in selected markets first or have different approval and allocation timing by region.
The cited strategy announcement does not provide final battery capacity, driving range, charging rate, power output, curb weight, luggage capacity, price, options, order timing or detailed suspension and brake specifications. It also does not establish whether combustion and electric versions will overlap in showrooms. Treat all of those details as unknown until Porsche publishes them.

What that means for a wait-versus-buy decision

An electric 718 should not be treated as a confirmed like-for-like financial or driving substitute for a combustion car. Until Porsche releases technical data and local pricing, a direct comparison is speculation.
A practical ownership plan for the transition
If you already own a 718
- Follow the schedule for your exact model year and engine rather than changing intervals because production has ended.
- Store complete service records and note any software updates, recalls or specialist repairs.
- Resolve warning lights and deferred maintenance while diagnostic tools and model knowledge are readily available.
- Ask your preferred workshop which components are currently special-order items and whether an approved alternative or remanufactured unit exists.
- Budget by condition and age, not by the assumption that the car will rise in value.
If you are shopping for one
- Compare the individual car’s purchase price, mileage, inspection results and maintenance history.
- Check that consumables and major service items match the precise engine and market specification.
- Have a specialist inspect cooling, suspension, brakes, drivetrain, electronics, accident repairs and corrosion before committing.
- Ask the seller for evidence of completed campaigns and replacement of time-sensitive items.
- Confirm insurance, registration and emissions requirements in your jurisdiction; production status does not change those legal obligations.
If you plan to wait
- Set a decision date rather than assuming the announced year guarantees delivery.
- Keep a backup plan if your current car becomes unreliable or your preferred market receives allocations later.
- Compare the eventual electric car with your actual needs—charging access, journey length, passenger and luggage use, winter conditions and operating costs—once verified specifications are available.
The bottom line for Boxster and Cayman owners
Porsche’s move means the combustion 718 is a finished production line and the next Boxster and Cayman generation is planned as electric. It does not mean current owners suddenly lose service or parts access. Porsche Classic documentation demonstrates ongoing support for certain named older generations, while coverage for every 718 year and component remains unconfirmed. Maintain the car according to its own documentation, verify parts by VIN and treat the 2028 electric timing—and every specification attached to it—as a prospective announcement until Porsche publishes customer-ready details.
