They are not cast-iron rotors with a ceramic coating. During braking, the pads clamp the rotating composite disc, friction converts the car’s kinetic energy into heat, and the disc’s ventilation features carry that heat away. Porsche says the result is lower unsprung mass, consistent response during repeated heavy braking and strong wet-weather performance.
The material is made by forming a carbon structure, infiltrating it with silicon and applying high-temperature processing. Porsche publishes the broad manufacturing stages and selected historical process temperatures, but not a complete current formula. The exact equipment package also depends on the Porsche model, model year and market.

What PCCB actually is
PCCB is a complete braking system built around a ceramic fibre-reinforced composite disc. The disc, its friction surface and the pad compound are developed as a matched combination. Calling PCCB simply “ceramic brakes” misses the important distinction: the part doing the braking is a carbon-based composite whose structure is converted and reinforced during processing, not an ordinary steel or cast-iron disc carrying a thin ceramic paint-like layer.
Porsche treats its Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB) as a different system. PSCB starts with a cast-iron disc and adds a tungsten-carbide coating. That construction should not be described as a PCCB variant, and the two systems should not be assumed to have identical servicing or performance characteristics.

What the disc is made of
Current Porsche description
In its current PCCB explainer, dated 5 February 2026, Porsche describes the disc as a ceramic fibre-reinforced composite. The structure is formed under high pressure, with aluminium particles integrated into the disc, and then subjected to prolonged heat treatment. Porsche does not publish a complete formulation, the precise proportions of every ingredient or a blanket statement that every production revision uses exactly the same recipe.
That qualification matters when reading technical descriptions online. “Carbon,” “ceramic” and “silicon” each describe part of the manufacturing route, but none alone is a full ingredient list. The finished disc is a composite whose properties come from the fibres, the ceramic matrix, the silicon treatment, the reinforcement and the final heat cycles.
The detailed historical process Porsche has published
A Porsche Newsroom account published on 4 June 2014 gives a more granular view of one production process. It begins with pure carbon processed into fibres. Porsche says the fibres are coated, chopped to nine millimetres and mixed with other ingredients that the company keeps secret. The mixture is compressed and cured; that historical account specifies curing at 200°C.
The compacted part is then turned into a high-strength carbon disc in a nitrogen atmosphere at 900°C. Porsche describes drilling the ventilation and water-removal holes at this stage. The disc is treated with silicon and heated to 1,400°C. During that final treatment, Porsche says silicon reacts with the surface of the short fibres, creating the ceramic composite structure.
“Since the carbon disc is formed with millions of tiny capillaries between the short interlinked fibres, liquid silicon is absorbed like a sponge soaks up water.”

— Porsche Newsroom, “New lightness,” 4 June 2014
The capillary explanation describes why silicon can penetrate the porous carbon preform before the final reaction. It is useful for understanding the process, but it is not a promise that all current discs follow every step in precisely the same sequence. The 2014 article is a historical manufacturing account, while Porsche’s 2026 explainer is the appropriate reference for the current system description.

How PCCB works when you press the pedal
Friction turns motion into heat
Pressing the brake pedal sends hydraulic pressure to the calipers. The caliper pistons push the pads against both sides of the rotating disc. Friction opposes the disc’s rotation, reducing wheel speed and therefore vehicle speed. The energy does not disappear: the car’s kinetic energy is converted primarily into heat in the pads and disc, with some heat entering the caliper, hub and surrounding air.
PCCB uses pads Porsche says are specially developed for the composite discs and intended to provide consistent friction across a wide temperature range. The practical goal is predictable pedal response as the brakes move from ordinary road temperatures into repeated, high-energy stops.
Perforations and curved cooling passages
The discs are drilled with perforations and have curved internal cooling channels. The holes provide paths for gases and water to leave the friction area, while the internal passages move air through the disc as it rotates. Porsche describes the channels as curved or involute, a geometry intended to improve airflow and cooling compared with a plain solid disc.

Cooling is not a substitute for correct pad bedding, caliper condition or usable disc thickness. It is a thermal-management feature: by moving heat out of the disc more effectively, the design helps keep friction behavior stable during repeated deceleration.

Repeated high-speed braking and wet conditions
Porsche says PCCB can maintain stable friction during repeated high-speed braking and respond to pedal input without requiring excessive pedal pressure. A 2017 Porsche account uses categorical language that the friction coefficient is “always constant.” That wording is Porsche’s claim, not a universal guarantee under every temperature, pad condition, road surface or maintenance state.
Porsche also says the disc and pads absorb less water than conventional systems, so wet-weather braking response remains strong with little delay. Those statements are manufacturer descriptions; the supplied Porsche material does not provide an independent, controlled comparison across vehicle models.
What the weight claims mean
Porsche’s current explainer gives two different measurements that should not be conflated:
| Claim | What it compares | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Around 50% lighter | The PCCB disc compared with a comparable cast-iron disc | Porsche-published approximate disc-level comparison |
| Approximately 20 kg saved | Overall vehicle mass from the braking system | Porsche-published approximate system-level figure that varies by model |
Reducing mass at the wheel is especially valuable because it is unsprung and rotating mass. Porsche says the lower unsprung mass can allow suspension components to respond more quickly to changes in the road surface. The effect is not a guaranteed handling result for every driver or setup: tyre choice, suspension calibration, wheel design and the particular vehicle all influence what you feel.

Benefits Porsche attributes to PCCB
- Stable friction under repeated load: Porsche designs the disc and pad combination for consistent braking as temperatures rise during repeated heavy stops.
- Lower unsprung and rotating mass: The lighter disc can reduce the work required of suspension and wheel-control components.
- Thermal management: Perforations and curved internal passages help move air through the disc and remove heat.
- Corrosion resistance: Porsche lists resistance to corrosion as a design benefit compared with conventional iron discs.
- Reduced water absorption: Porsche says the disc-and-pad system absorbs less water, helping limit wet-weather delay.
- Long road-use life when maintained correctly: Porsche says service life can be long, but it does not provide a general mileage promise.
These are Porsche’s stated design benefits, not results from an independent test supplied for this article. No universal claim can be made that PCCB is the best choice for every road driver, track user or vehicle configuration.
PCCB compared with Porsche’s other brake constructions
| System | Disc construction | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| PCCB | Ceramic fibre-reinforced composite | Carbon-based composite disc with matched pads; Porsche claims substantially lower disc mass than comparable cast iron. |
| Original Porsche brake system | Cast iron | Conventional iron-disc construction used on many Porsche applications. |
| PSCB | Cast iron with tungsten-carbide coating | Separate surface-coated system, not a PCCB disc or PCCB derivative. |
The available sources do not establish a model-independent purchase price, total ownership cost, replacement interval or universal road-versus-track winner for these systems. Those questions require the exact car, brake option, market and usage pattern.
Which Porsche models have PCCB?
PCCB availability is equipment-specific. Porsche’s current explainer identifies PCCB as standard equipment on the 911 Turbo S (type 992.2) and Taycan Turbo S. It also lists PCCB as an option on selected models in the 911, Cayenne, Macan, Taycan and Panamera ranges.
“Available” does not mean every trim in every country includes the same hardware. Model-year changes, regional specifications, wheel packages and other options can alter what is fitted. Verify the build sheet or vehicle identification number with Porsche for the exact car before ordering discs, pads, sensors or related parts.
The history behind the system
Porsche dates PCCB’s introduction to 2000. The company says it first offered the system as an option on the 911 Turbo (type 996) and as standard equipment on the 911 GT2. Porsche also claims it was the first car manufacturer to develop a ceramic composite brake disc with a curved, or involute, cooling channel. That is a Porsche historical claim from its published material.

Maintenance, replacement and buying cautions
There is no universal PCCB parts list
A PCCB replacement disc is not a generic “ceramic rotor” that can be selected by diameter alone. Disc dimensions, mounting details, pad shape, sensor arrangements and software or electronic requirements can vary by Porsche model and axle. The same model name can also span multiple generations and option packages.
Use the vehicle’s exact specification when sourcing parts. A Porsche dealer or qualified workshop can identify the approved disc, pad and sensor combination from the vehicle identification number. Do not assume a component advertised for one PCCB-equipped Porsche fits another.
What the published material does not establish
- No current, model-independent replacement price is established.
- No single service interval applies to every PCCB installation.
- No general mileage guarantee is published.
- No independent test in the supplied sources proves a universal performance advantage over every cast-iron setup.
Inspection still matters. Uneven pad wear, vibration, unusual noise, warning messages or a change in pedal feel warrant professional diagnosis. Braking components should be assessed as a system rather than by replacing a disc or pad based only on a generic online listing.
How to interpret Porsche’s headline numbers
The figures most often quoted about PCCB describe different things. The approximately 50% figure concerns disc mass against a comparable cast-iron disc, while the approximately 20 kg figure concerns estimated vehicle-level savings and changes with the model. The 200°C, 900°C and 1,400°C temperatures, plus the nine-millimetre fibre length, come from Porsche’s 2014 process account; they are manufacturing details, not operating limits or performance ratings for every current disc.
Keeping those categories separate prevents a common error: treating a production temperature as a brake operating temperature, or treating a disc-only weight comparison as a guaranteed reduction for every complete vehicle.
The practical answer
PCCB works because Porsche combines a porous carbon-fibre preform, silicon-based high-temperature conversion and a ceramic composite disc with purpose-developed pads, drilled ventilation and curved internal cooling channels. The system’s intended advantages are lower wheel-end mass, thermal stability and predictable response in demanding braking, with Porsche also citing corrosion resistance and reduced water absorption. It is a model-specific factory system, not a universal ceramic coating or interchangeable aftermarket category, so the exact vehicle specification should govern any purchase or service decision.
