Robotaxi apps collect much more than a pickup address. A typical record can combine your name and payment details, phone and network information, precise trip coordinates, messages and support calls, vehicle-camera footage, and predictions such as places you visit often. Turning off your phone’s location permission reduces one source, but it does not stop the service from receiving driver- or vehicle-derived trip location or from linking the ride to your account.
The most effective approach is layered: use the least-permissive location setting that still lets the ride work, enter addresses manually, disable optional advertising and promotional uses, understand the cabin-camera and microphone controls in the vehicle, and use the provider’s download, access, correction, or deletion tools. Exact rights, retention and sharing depend on the provider, autonomous-vehicle partner, record type and your jurisdiction.

What information a robotaxi app can collect
Robotaxi services operate two connected systems: the phone app and the autonomous vehicle. The app creates an account and dispatch record; the vehicle creates sensor and in-cabin records. A ride may therefore generate information even when your phone contributes little location data.

Waymo’s rider privacy materials list identifiers and contact information, payment method and billing address, and account details. These fields let the service authenticate you, charge the ride, provide receipts and respond to support requests. They are normally linked directly to the rider account rather than treated as anonymous trip telemetry.

Device and network activity
Apps can record device characteristics, operating-system and network activity, and interactions with the in-vehicle interface. This information helps deliver notifications, troubleshoot an app or vehicle connection, detect abuse and maintain service security. Disabling precise location does not disable these other technical records.
Trip and device location
Location data can include the pickup and drop-off points, route, timestamps, the phone’s location and locations inferred from the vehicle or driver. Waymo describes all of these categories. Uber’s app may request precise location and can use Bluetooth or nearby Wi-Fi signals to improve positioning. If you deny that permission, you can enter pickup and drop-off addresses manually, but Uber says location supplied by the driver during the trip is still collected and linked to your rider account.
Communications and behavioral inferences
Support chats, messages, calls and other communications can become part of the service record. Providers may also infer frequently visited destinations or suggest pickup and drop-off locations from earlier trips. Those inferences can personalize the experience, but they reveal routines even when you did not type the same destination on every ride.
Vehicle-generated information
A robotaxi can create interior audio or video, exterior road imagery, lidar and radar measurements, vehicle location and time data. The purpose may be safety, incident response, cleaning checks, lost-item recovery, autonomous-driving development or service improvement. Whether a record is tied to your account depends on the event and provider; the policy for the vehicle operator can add rules beyond the app’s general policy.

Does turning off phone location stop tracking?
No. It stops or reduces the app’s direct access to your phone’s location, but it does not make the ride location-free.
Uber explicitly says that, with app location disabled, a rider can type addresses manually while location from the driver during the trip is still collected and associated with the account. A vehicle’s own navigation and operational systems can likewise know where the car is. Waymo and Tesla describe trip or vehicle location as part of their service data. A location permission therefore controls one input, not the entire location trail.
Choose While Using the App, Only this time or an approximate-location option when your phone offers it and the ride can function that way. The iOS labels Always, While Using the App and Never are documented by Uber; Android wording varies by version. Test the setting before a time-critical trip because a stricter choice can make pickup less reliable.

Waymo’s interior monitoring
Waymo says it uses cameras inside the car to help trips go smoothly and improve services. Its examples include investigating a trip problem, checking cleanliness, confirming seatbelts and finding an item left behind. Its help documentation says, in substance, that microphones can hear riders only during a Support call or when riders actively choose to turn them on. Check the in-car indicator and current settings rather than assuming every microphone is continuously open.

Uber’s road-data collection
Uber’s road-data notice concerns vehicles operating on public roads, not a promise that every rider’s cabin is recorded. It describes outward-facing cameras combined with lidar, radar, location and time information. Traffic scenes can incidentally include faces or license plates. Uber says its autonomous-driving partners are contractually prohibited from using those recordings to identify or profile the people captured. The data may nevertheless be shared with selected partners, subsidiaries, service providers, insurers or authorities in specified safety, legal or dispute situations.
Tesla Robotaxi events and cabin data
Tesla describes safety-event clips of up to 30 seconds that can be associated with the rider account for emergency response, vehicle evaluation or roadside assistance. It also describes anonymous external-camera recordings used for fleet learning. Cabin-camera data is not transmitted by default except for support, occupancy detection, safety events or a rider’s opt-in. Sound can be transmitted for a support request or safety event; siren detection is processed locally by default. Optional entertainment or media services can process their own data under separate policies.
Why the vehicle partner matters
Uber’s autonomous-vehicle directory directs riders to partner policies, including those for Avride, Motional, Wayve, Zoox and Waymo. The Uber app policy therefore cannot answer every question about a particular autonomous vehicle. Before riding, identify the vehicle operator shown in the app or car and read that operator’s current cabin, sensor and retention terms.
How to reduce the data you expose
- Audit phone permissions before the ride. Open your phone’s app-permission page, select the robotaxi app and choose the least-permissive location option that still supports the pickup. Disable background location if it is not required. Review Bluetooth, nearby-device, microphone, camera, contacts and notification permissions separately; location settings do not govern those categories.
- Enter pickup and drop-off addresses manually. Uber documents manual entry when location is disabled, and Tesla documents manual pickup entry. This avoids continuous phone-location permission while preserving the addresses needed to dispatch the vehicle. The provider can still receive vehicle or driver location during the trip.
- Turn off optional promotion and targeted advertising. In Waymo, review account privacy controls for promotional messages and any Do Not Sell or Share or targeted-advertising choice available in your region. These settings reduce secondary use; they do not erase operational trip records needed to provide or document a ride.
- Check cabin indicators and opt-ins. Look for the vehicle’s camera or microphone status before discussing sensitive information. Do not activate a microphone or cabin-camera analytics feature unless you need it. During a Support call, assume the conversation can be recorded or transmitted under the support terms.
- Decline optional recordings and connected services. Avoid support recordings that are not necessary to resolve your issue. Sign out of third-party entertainment accounts, or do not use those services, because their providers apply separate privacy policies and may receive account or usage data.
- Use data-rights tools. Where applicable, request access, correction, portability, restriction or deletion. Waymo provides account-download and deletion pathways and lets riders review trip history. Uber says a road-recording request may require identity verification and enough information to locate the footage, such as the relevant vehicle, time or incident.
- Delete or close accounts deliberately. Download information you may need for receipts, insurance or disputes before deleting an account. Account deletion may not instantly remove records that must be retained for legal, safety, fraud-prevention or financial obligations, and it does not necessarily erase an independently held vehicle recording.
What privacy tools cannot do
No consumer product blocks every robotaxi data source. A VPN can change the apparent network address but cannot hide the pickup address you enter, the vehicle’s route, cabin sensors or a payment record. A signal-blocking pouch can interfere with the phone connection needed to summon or safely complete a ride and cannot prevent the vehicle from sensing its surroundings. Disabling phone location also cannot prevent driver-derived or vehicle-derived trip data.

Use these tools, if at all, for the narrow problem they solve—such as reducing app network metadata—not as a guarantee of anonymity. The meaningful controls are permission choices, manual address entry, in-app privacy settings and formal rights requests.
Retention, sharing and jurisdiction
There is no single robotaxi retention period. Uber’s road-data notice says recordings are kept only as long as necessary for stated purposes or as required by law, with safeguards such as encryption and access limits. A safety investigation, insurance claim, legal hold or regulatory request can therefore extend retention beyond ordinary operations.
Data may move among the app company, an autonomous-vehicle partner, cloud or service providers, insurers, cities, transportation authorities and law-enforcement agencies in defined circumstances. Uber says cities or transportation authorities may receive vehicle geolocation and timestamps for order starts, stops and routes. The city data is not collected from the rider’s personal phone and is not directly identifying according to Uber, although it could become identifiable with additional effort.

Privacy rights differ by country, state, account type, app version and vehicle partner. A deletion or access right that applies to an account record may not automatically apply to an anonymized fleet-learning clip or footage that cannot be located. Read the live policy and the in-app labels immediately before submitting a request.
A practical pre-ride privacy checklist
- Confirm which company operates the vehicle.
- Set phone location to While Using, Only this time or approximate location where workable.
- Prepare typed pickup and destination addresses.
- Review microphone, camera, Bluetooth and nearby-device permissions.
- Disable promotional or targeted-ad sharing that you do not want.
- Check the cabin camera and microphone indicator before sensitive conversations.
- Avoid optional support recordings and third-party media logins.
- Save receipts or trip details before requesting account deletion.
- For a footage request, record the date, approximate time, vehicle and incident so the provider can locate the record.
Bottom line
Robotaxi privacy is a combination of ordinary ride-app data and vehicle telemetry. Limit phone permissions and enter addresses manually, but expect the ride’s vehicle or driver to generate location data anyway. The strongest protection comes from provider-specific controls—especially account downloads, deletion and advertising opt-outs—and from understanding when interior microphones, cabin cameras and exterior sensors are active. Because autonomous partners and laws differ, verify the policy for the exact service and vehicle you are about to use.
