Check two independent limits before choosing an electric panel van: payload (how much weight the plated vehicle can carry) and usable cargo dimensions (whether your load can physically enter and fit). A load can fit inside the quoted cubic volume yet exceed the weight limit, or be light enough but too long, wide for the wheel arches, or too tall for the doors.
The useful comparison is always configuration-specific. Match the market, model year, body length, roof height, gross vehicle mass (GVM), powertrain, doors and installed equipment, then verify the plated limits and actual mass of the vehicle you will receive.

Payload and cargo space answer different questions
Payload is the remaining legal weight
Payload is the weight available for people, tools, racking, liners, charging equipment and cargo after the vehicle itself is accounted for. The relevant ceiling is the vehicle’s plated gross vehicle mass (GVM), not a headline figure from another body or weight rating. A higher-GVM version can have a very different allowance from an otherwise similar van.
Manufacturers do not always present payload on the same basis. Ford’s UK E-Transit tables, for example, state maximum gross payload excluding the driver, while its brochure explains a calculation from GVM and kerb mass with a 75 kg driver deduction. Read the definition beside every number before comparing it with another make.

Cargo dimensions determine whether the load fits
Volume is only a first filter. A pallet, ladder, pipe bundle or cabinet may need a particular floor length, clear width or door opening. Check the usable floor length with the bulkhead and fixed equipment installed, the maximum internal width, the width between wheel arches, internal height, rear and side-door openings, and loading height.

Start with the exact vehicle configuration
Write down the full specification of every van on your shortlist. At minimum, record the body length (such as L2, L3 or L4), roof height (H2 or H3), GVM rating, battery or powertrain, door arrangement and market. A figure for an L4 high-roof van is not an allowance for an L2 standard-roof van, and a 4-tonne version cannot be treated as a 3.5-tonne version.
Ask for the manufacturer’s technical sheet or configurator output for that exact build. Confirm whether the payload includes or excludes the driver, and whether the quoted volume is measured to the bulkhead, to the seat backs or by a standard such as VDA. Keep the document with the vehicle quotation so a later option change cannot silently alter your calculation.

Build a realistic load list
- Write down the heaviest normal cargo, not an optimistic average. Include seasonal or occasional loads that could be carried on a typical working day.
- Add every person who may travel: driver, passengers and assistants.
- Add tools, batteries, chargers, shelving, racking, flooring, liners, partitions, tie-downs and permanently mounted equipment.
- Check the exact GVM and the manufacturer’s payload definition for the selected body and rating.
- Subtract the people and equipment from the stated allowance, then leave operating margin rather than planning to run at the absolute limit.
Kerb mass is not necessarily identical from one delivered van to another. Ford’s UK brochure notes that body style, engine and options affect kerb mass; its standard figure includes fluids and a 90%-full fuel tank but excludes the driver, crew and cargo. Manufacturing tolerances can also change the actual mass. Rear-float options and other equipment add mass and therefore reduce payload.

Use a margin when close to the limit
Ford advises customers who intend to load close to maximum payload to add a margin equal to 5% of kerb mass before calculating the load. That is a planning safeguard, not extra legal capacity. The brochure also states: “It is the responsibility of the vehicle operator to ensure their vehicles are legally compliant for road use.” Apply the rule for the vehicle and jurisdiction concerned, and follow the plated information on the actual van.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose a particular configuration is listed with 1,069 kg payload. If the planned day carries two occupants and 180 kg of fitted equipment, those items consume part of the allowance before any goods are loaded. The remaining capacity is the listed payload minus the measured occupants and equipment; it is not 1,069 kg of cargo. Weigh the finished vehicle if the result is close to the limit, because a brochure figure is not a substitute for the mass of your build.
Measure the cargo space that your work actually uses
Length and floor shape
Measure the longest item in its real carrying orientation. Check floor length at the height where it will sit; a bulkhead, wheel arch, toolbox or raised floor can shorten the usable path. If an item must be loaded diagonally or above another object, record that requirement rather than relying on the headline floor measurement.

Record both the maximum internal width and the clear width between wheel arches. A sheet or pallet may fit at shoulder height but not on the floor. Measure the side-door and rear-door openings separately: the body can be wider than the aperture through which the load must pass.

Height, openings and loading height
Measure internal height from the actual floor to the lowest obstruction, not simply to the roof lining. Then measure rear and side entry heights and the distance from ground to the cargo floor. A tall cabinet can clear the internal roof but fail at the door header, while a high floor can require a lift or ramp that changes how the load is handled.
Allow for movement and securing
Leave room for tie-downs, protective packaging and safe access. If staff must walk or reach the load, that working space is part of the practical capacity even when it is not included in the manufacturer’s volume figure.
How to read published volume and payload figures
Do not merge numbers produced by different methods. A maximum volume measured with a bulkhead may not match a VDA volume, and figures from different markets may describe different body codes or equipment. Use volume to narrow the shortlist, then verify the dimensions and payload of the exact build.

Ford UK E-Transit examples
Ford UK’s E-Transit 350 GVM technical table covers five van bodies from L2H2 through L4H3. In that UK document, maximum load volume with the bulkhead ranges from 9.5 to 15.1 m³, while VDA loadspace ranges from 8.3 to 14.1 m³. Maximum gross payload excluding the driver ranges from 790 to 1,035 kg. The listed loadspace between the wheel arches is 1,392 mm, and floor load length runs from 3,083 to 4,256 mm.

The same document lists a separate 390 GVM series for those five body configurations, with maximum gross payload excluding the driver from 1,190 to 1,408 kg. That difference demonstrates why the rating must be identified before a payload comparison. These are UK specifications for the versions in the cited technical document; they are not a cross-market test or a promise for another model year.

Renault Master E-Tech examples
Renault UK lists payload capacities of 1,504 kg for L2H2, 1,441 kg for L3H2 and 1,327 kg for L3H3 on its Master E-Tech page. The page separately highlights a 1,625 kg loading-capacity figure for the L2H2 E-Tech 4-tonne with an 87 kWh battery. That 4-tonne, 87 kWh figure belongs to the specifically rated version; it is not the payload of every Master E-Tech.
A Renault Italy MY26 configurator example shows an L2H2 T35 with a 3,500 kg GVM and urban-range electric powertrain. The selected configuration lists 3,225 mm loading length, 1,069 kg payload and 10.8 m³ load volume. It is an Italian-market, model-year-specific configuration and should not be combined with UK figures as though the vehicles had identical ratings, equipment or measurement methods.

A practical shortlisting procedure
- Describe the work. List the heaviest routine load, its dimensions, number of occupants and all equipment that stays in the van.
- Set the rating. Decide which local GVM class is appropriate, then request figures for that exact rating rather than selecting a body from a generic range.
- Screen by weight. Compare the realistic combined mass of cargo, people and equipment with the defined payload, including a margin if the load is near the limit.
- Screen by geometry. Match the longest, widest and tallest items to floor length, wheel-arch width, internal height, door openings and loading height.
- Check the measurement method. Label each volume as bulkhead, VDA or another method and compare like with like.
- Inspect the built vehicle. Confirm that racking, flooring, partitions, ramps and other options on the quotation are included in the mass and dimensions.
- Verify before signing. Ask the seller for the plated GVM and the remaining payload for the actual vehicle identification and arrange weighing when your projected load is close to the limit.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the biggest number in a brochure
Brochures often show several lengths, roofs and ratings together. Selecting the highest payload or volume and assuming it applies to every body is the most common error. Highlight the row that matches your GVM, body and market, and ignore unrelated rows.

Comparing volume without entry measurements
Two vans with similar cubic capacity can have different door widths, wheel-arch intrusions or floor lengths. Reject a van that fails the loading aperture even if its advertised volume looks sufficient.
Forgetting installed equipment and occupants
Racking, a lining, a ramp and charging accessories are part of the vehicle’s carried mass. So are passengers. Weigh or obtain reliable masses for these items instead of treating the published payload as cargo-only capacity.
Treating a brochure mass as the delivered mass
Options and manufacturing tolerances alter kerb mass. When the expected load is close to the ceiling, have the completed vehicle weighed and compare the result with its plated limits. If the numbers do not work, choose a higher-rated configuration, reduce equipment or revise the load plan before operating it.
Mixing countries and model years
Market equipment, tax classes, battery choices and rating conventions can change specifications. Keep UK, Italian and other national figures in separate notes and ask the local seller to confirm the current vehicle’s plate and technical data.
Questions to put to the dealer
- What is the exact plated GVM for this vehicle, and what payload definition is used in the quoted figure?
- What is the kerb mass of this completed build with the selected battery, doors, trim and options?
- Are the payload and volume figures measured with the bulkhead and any fixed equipment installed?
- What are the usable floor length, maximum width, wheel-arch width, internal height, rear-door opening, side-door opening and loading height?
- Will the quoted racking, lining, ramp or partition be included in the mass calculation?
- Can the finished vehicle be weighed before delivery if the planned load is near the limit?
Bottom line
Choose an electric panel van only after it passes both tests: the real vehicle must have enough plated payload for cargo, people and equipment, and its measured openings and internal dimensions must accept the largest items you carry. Use manufacturer figures to build a shortlist, but confirm the exact body, GVM, market, model year and delivered mass with the seller before purchase.
