Short answer: Opel is planning an all-electric C-SUV that would combine Opel-led design and vehicle engineering with core electric architecture and battery technology from Leapmotor. Stellantis and Leapmotor say shared components and purchasing could improve affordability, while Zaragoza, Spain, is being assessed for production from 2028. However, the project remains prospective: there is no confirmed production decision, price, range, charging specification, order date, warranty or delivery commitment yet.

What Opel and Leapmotor have actually announced

On 8 May 2026, Stellantis and Leapmotor announced an intention to expand their strategic partnership. The proposed Opel model is described as the first vehicle arising from that contemplated expansion. That wording matters: it confirms a project direction, not a finished product or an irrevocable manufacturing program.

Opel says the vehicle will be an all-electric C-SUV positioned alongside the Grandland, Frontera and Mokka. The company expects it could go on sale as early as 2028. Stellantis is assessing its Zaragoza, Spain, facility as a production location, with a potential production start also cited for 2028. Neither statement is an order opening, delivery date or final commitment to build the vehicle.

The announced concept is a cooperation rather than a simple rebadge. Opel says the SUV is being designed and created in Rüsselsheim, Germany, with international development teams in Germany and China. Opel identifies its responsibilities as design, the onboard experience, chassis engineering, lighting and seating technology. The vehicle is expected to use core elements of Leapmotor’s latest electric architecture and battery technology, but no platform name or component-by-component specification has been published.

Who contributes what?

Area What has been stated What has not been established
Vehicle concept and design Opel says the C-SUV is designed and created in Rüsselsheim. Final exterior, interior, dimensions and trim details.
Vehicle engineering Opel lists chassis engineering, lighting, seating technology and the onboard experience. Suspension layout, steering calibration, software functions and driving modes.
Electric systems The SUV is expected to use core components of Leapmotor’s latest electric architecture and battery technology. Battery chemistry, usable capacity, motor outputs, platform designation, charging hardware and connector.
Manufacturing Zaragoza is under evaluation; a 2028 production start is a potential timing. A final production decision, volumes, local-content level and the exact line on which the Opel would be built.
Purchasing and cost Stellantis and Leapmotor say shared components and joint purchasing could improve price competitiveness. A retail price, quantified saving or proof that the SUV will undercut a particular rival.

For buyers, the practical interpretation is a mixed engineering program: Opel’s announced role covers the parts that shape the vehicle’s look, cabin experience and driving character, while Leapmotor technology is expected to supply important electric-system foundations. It is not accurate to call the SUV entirely Opel-developed or entirely Leapmotor-developed on the evidence available.

Why the partnership could matter to buyers

A potentially faster route to market

Opel says the cooperation could enable a development time of less than two years. If that target is achieved, Opel could add a new electric SUV more quickly than a clean-sheet program developed without shared architecture. The statement is a manufacturer expectation, not independent validation of the finished vehicle’s reliability, refinement or crash performance. A short development schedule also makes final software validation, regional certification and production ramp-up especially important questions to ask when ordering begins.

Possible cost advantages, with no price guarantee

Using components enabled by Leapmotor International’s ecosystem and combining purchasing volumes are presented as ways to improve affordability for European customers. Those mechanisms can reduce engineering duplication and supplier costs, but they do not establish what a customer will pay. Battery size, equipment, taxes, exchange rates, dealer margins, transport and market-specific incentives can all change the final transaction price.

Until Opel publishes a country-specific price list and standard equipment, the responsible conclusion is only that the partnership could help affordability. There is no announced saving, target price or evidence that this Opel will be cheaper than a named competing SUV.

A European production possibility

Zaragoza could give the project a European manufacturing base and allow Opel and Stellantis to use an existing industrial site. Stellantis says the Opel would be added on a new line alongside Leapmotor’s C-SUV B10, for which production at Zaragoza could potentially begin as early as 2026. The B10 and the Opel are separate models with separate prospective production plans.

  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

A Spanish assembly location does not, by itself, answer questions about country-of-origin treatment, local content, import rules, tax eligibility or consumer incentives. Those outcomes depend on the final supply chain and the rules in each market. Buyers should wait for official homologation and market documentation rather than infer benefits from the factory location.

A broader service footprint, but not a guarantee for this Opel

In May 2026, Stellantis reported that Leapmotor International had expanded to more than 850 sales and service points in Europe and had shipped more than 40,000 vehicles in Europe during 2025. These are company-reported figures for Leapmotor International. They indicate an expanding commercial network, but they do not prove that every location will sell or service the future Opel, nor do they predict this model’s sales volume.

How to assess the SUV when Opel publishes specifications

1. Compare like-for-like prices

Check the price in your country, including VAT and mandatory equipment, rather than comparing a headline figure from another market. Separate the standard trim from options, launch promotions and government incentives. Ask whether the quoted price is recurring or limited to an introductory allocation.

2. Check range and efficiency under the same test

Use the official WLTP figure for European comparisons, then examine energy consumption, wheel size and winter-range guidance. A larger battery can increase range but also weight and price. A smaller battery may be adequate for an urban commute while requiring more frequent long-distance charging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Examine the complete charging specification

Look for AC charging power, maximum DC power, the time stated for a defined battery window, preconditioning behavior and the connector used in your market. Peak charging power alone is not enough; the charging curve determines how long a motorway stop actually takes. Confirm whether a heat pump, battery preconditioning and bidirectional charging are standard, optional or unavailable.

4. Verify space and practical capability

Compare exterior length and width, rear-seat room, boot capacity measured with the seats in use, loading height and turning circle. If you tow, carry bikes or use a roof box, wait for the official towing limit, roof-load rating and approved accessories. A C-SUV badge does not guarantee a particular cargo volume.

5. Read the warranty and service terms

Check the years and mileage for the vehicle and high-voltage battery, the battery-capacity threshold, corrosion coverage, roadside assistance and software support. Confirm where repairs can be performed, how long common parts are expected to take and whether over-the-air updates affect warranty obligations.

6. Confirm delivery and manufacturing information

Ask the dealer whether the vehicle is a confirmed production model or a reservation subject to approval. The final factory, build schedule, homologation status and allocation for your country should be in writing. Do not treat a projected 2028 sales window as a guaranteed delivery date.

What the partnership does not prove

  • It does not prove that the Opel will be cheaper than another electric SUV.
  • It does not prove that the Opel will use the same range, battery or charging figures as the Leapmotor T03, C10 or any other existing model.
  • It does not prove that every Leapmotor sales and service point will handle Opel warranty work.
  • It does not establish eligibility for a national tax credit, company-car benefit or purchase incentive.
  • It does not establish a final safety score, reliability record or resale value for a vehicle that has not launched.

These distinctions protect buyers from turning a partnership announcement into specifications that have not been released.

Historical context: how the relationship began

Stellantis and Leapmotor created Leapmotor International as a 51/49 Stellantis–Leapmotor joint venture in their original 2023 announcement. The venture received rights outside Greater China to export, sell and manufacture Leapmotor products. In May 2026, Stellantis described its ownership stake in Leapmotor as approximately 21%; the 2023 announcement had described an approximately 20% stake at that time. The change in wording reflects the dates of the respective announcements, not a published ownership structure for the future Opel model.

During the European launch announcement in 2024, Stellantis said designated Stellantis-brand dealers were taking orders for the Leapmotor T03 and C10. That release described the C10 as a D-segment SUV with a 420-kilometre WLTP range and a launch price from €36,400, with prices identified as indicative and market-dependent. Those were launch-era claims for the C10. They are not current C10 pricing, and they cannot be used as a forecast for the Opel C-SUV’s price, range or equipment.

What prospective owners can do now

  • Decide how much daily range and boot space you actually need before comparing future figures.
  • Check whether home, workplace or public charging is available; a home charger is useful for many EV owners but is not a requirement for every buyer.
  • If you are considering a wallbox, wait for the Opel’s confirmed connector and AC charging rate, then verify electrical capacity and installer compatibility.
  • Track Opel’s announcements for the production decision, technical specifications, country pricing, order dates and warranty terms.
  • Keep any deposit or reservation conditional on a written specification, cancellation terms and an estimated delivery window.

Bottom line for buyers

The proposed Opel electric C-SUV could give buyers an Opel-shaped, Opel-engineered driving and cabin experience while using Leapmotor electric architecture and battery technology underneath. Shared purchasing and a possible Zaragoza production program may help Opel bring the vehicle to market quickly and pursue a competitive price. The announced development target is less than two years, and sales could begin as early as 2028.

For now, however, this is a plan under consideration rather than a vehicle you can evaluate on value. The decisive questions—price, range, battery, charging, warranty, service coverage, production confirmation and delivery timing—remain unanswered. Treat the project as worth watching, but make no purchase comparison until Opel publishes market-specific specifications.
