Your ordinary car insurance may not cover the Nürburgring. The answer depends on whether you are driving Touristenfahrten, a closed track day, an organised driving experience or a race-style event, plus the exact wording of your policy. Some policies specifically exclude the Nordschleife, track days, testing and competitive driving. Others may cover only third-party road liability, not damage to your own car or the circuit.
For a tourist drive, the car must be road-legal under German rules and carry valid vehicle liability insurance; non-German vehicles must carry proof of insurance. The Nürburgring does not sell insurance at the circuit, so you need to establish cover before arriving.

There is no single “Nürburgring insurance” answer
Insurance turns on four details: the session you booked, the circuit used, the vehicle and driver, and the exclusions in the policy schedule and wording. A statement that your policy covers “Germany” is not enough. A policy can include Germany for ordinary road use while naming the Nordschleife, toll roads, track days or competitive driving as exclusions.

- Touristenfahrten: public tourist sessions operated under the Nürburgring’s road-traffic framework.
- A closed track day: a private event controlled by an organiser’s booking terms and waivers.
- A driving experience or course: an organised programme that may include limited participant or third-party insurance.
- A race-style, timed or testing event: the category most likely to trigger exclusions for racing, timing, trials or tests.
Those labels are not interchangeable. Ask the insurer to confirm the exact event name and date in writing rather than relying on a general territorial statement.
What Touristenfahrten requires
Road-legal vehicle and documents
The Nürburgring’s driving rules applying from January 2026 treat tourist rides within the German road-traffic framework. Your vehicle must be licensed for road use under the German StVZO rules. Carry your driving licence and vehicle registration documents. If the vehicle is not registered in Germany, carry proof of insurance; the rules make that proof mandatory for non-German vehicles.
The Nürburgring’s official information requires at least valid vehicle liability insurance for a vehicle used on tourist rides. That is a minimum road-use requirement, not a promise that your policy will pay for your own crash damage, a barrier or other track costs.
No insurance counter at the circuit
The Nürburgring’s FAQ states that insurance cannot be bought at the circuit. Arrange and verify cover before travelling. If your insurer will not confirm the Nordschleife in writing, treat that uncertainty as a lack of confirmed cover.
Road rules do not create first-party cover
Touristenfahrten rules govern how the session operates; they do not automatically turn a normal motor policy into track insurance. Read the policy for references to the Nordschleife, private toll roads, track days, racing, timing, trials, tests, modifications, driver eligibility and territory. The circuit operator also excludes its own liability for user losses, subject to the legal exceptions stated in its terms.

Why a normal policy can fail
Private-car policies often contain a specific circuit exclusion alongside broader motorsport wording. One current policy example, version 49, excludes loss, damage, injury or liability while the vehicle is used:
“On the Nurburgring Nordschleife, or any sections of private toll roads without speed limits.”
The same policy example separately excludes “track days, trials or tests” and competitive driving. This is an example, not a universal rule: your own wording controls. Nevertheless, a named Nordschleife exclusion can defeat a claim even when the vehicle is road-registered and the event is called a tourist drive rather than a race.
Check both the general exclusions and the schedule. A certificate showing comprehensive cover may not override a circuit-specific exclusion. Ask for a written answer that quotes the relevant clause or confirms that the clause does not apply to your session.
Touristenfahrten versus a closed track day
Tourist sessions
Touristenfahrten operate under the Nürburgring’s public-session rules. You still need a road-legal vehicle, the required documents and valid liability insurance. Your policy must separately permit the Nordschleife if you want protection for your own car, and you must establish whether it covers any resulting third-party or circuit liability.

Closed events
A closed track day is governed by the organiser’s contract, waiver and event rules. DN Events’ terms state that the person or company making the vehicle booking is fully responsible for damage to the circuit, barriers or venue property. Its terms also warn: “You should not expect your normal road risk insurance to cover you or any third party in the event of an accident.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A waiver does not prove that insurance exists; it can instead allocate financial responsibility to you or the booking party.
What organiser-provided cover may include
For driving experiences conducted by Nürburgring itself, the published Conditions Driving Experiences & Courses list the following sums. They are limits in those terms, not a guarantee that every Nürburgring event has identical insurance.
| Cover described in the published conditions | Published amount or scope | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Participant accident: death | €15,000 | Applies within the stated participant-accident terms. |
| Participant accident: invalidity | €30,000 | Applies within the stated participant-accident terms. |
| Third-party personal injury | €1,500,000 | Cover is limited to the published sum. |
| Third-party property damage | €500,000 | Cover is limited to the published sum. |
| Third-party pecuniary damage | €50,000 | Cover is limited to the published sum. |
| Damage to buildings, track, equipment or crash barriers | Participant remains liable under the conditions | The organiser’s insurance does not erase this responsibility. |
The conditions say the cover applies only within those sums and for simple negligence. They exclude gross negligence, intent and amounts above the limits. Confirm that the specific experience you booked is governed by the current conditions and ask how any excess, recovery charge or uninsured amount is allocated.
What happens if you hit the Armco?
Armco is the track’s barrier system, and a barrier strike can create a liability claim separate from damage to your car. On a closed event, the booking party may be contractually responsible for the barrier, circuit or venue damage. On an organiser-run driving experience, the published conditions expressly keep participants liable for damage to buildings, track and equipment, including crash barriers.

Your own vehicle policy may exclude the Nordschleife or track use, leaving you to fund repairs. Even if the car is insured for road liability, that does not establish first-party cover for collision damage. Ask specifically whether the policy covers:
- Barrier and Armco repair charges.
- Marshal, recovery and spill-clean-up costs.
- Track-closure or venue charges.
- Damage to another participant’s vehicle or property.
- Passenger injury and claims made against the driver.
Do not assume that a third-party liability limit covers every circuit invoice. The contract may treat venue damage as a separate responsibility, and the insurer may seek recovery from you if you breached a policy condition.
Coverage to verify before booking
Obtain a written answer from the insurer or broker to each question below. Keep the reply with the policy documents and event booking.
- Which circuit? Confirm Nordschleife, Grand Prix circuit or both. A policy may name one and exclude the other.
- Which session? State Touristenfahrten, closed track day, instruction, testing, timed running or race-style activity.
- Own-car damage? Confirm whether collision damage is covered, the agreed or market value basis, the excess and any mechanical-failure exclusion.
- Third-party liability? Ask about other vehicles, passengers, marshals and spectators, and whether the insurer can recover from you after a breach.
- Circuit liabilities? Ask directly about Armco, barriers, marshal costs, recovery, spill clean-up, buildings, equipment and track closure.
- Driver and vehicle rules? Confirm licence requirements, permitted modifications, tyres, timing equipment and any driver-age or experience condition.
- Conduct exclusions? Check alcohol or drugs, licence breaches, racing, timing, testing and competitive-driving language.
- Territory and vehicle ownership? Verify territorial limits and whether cover differs for a personally owned car, leased car or rental vehicle.
Request the answer for the exact vehicle registration and driver names. A broker’s generic statement that “Germany is covered” does not address a clause naming the Nordschleife.

| Comparison point | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Session eligibility | Does it cover Touristenfahrten, closed days, instruction, testing or race-style use? | A policy can accept one category and exclude another. |
| Nordschleife wording | Is the circuit named as covered or excluded? | Specific wording can override broad German territorial cover. |
| Own-car damage | Is collision damage insured, and what excess and valuation apply? | Road liability alone will not repair your car. |
| Third-party liability | What are the limits and who counts as a third party? | Passenger, marshal, another driver and venue claims may be treated differently. |
| Barrier and circuit liability | Are Armco, venue property, recovery and closure charges included? | Organiser terms may make the booking party liable regardless of car cover. |
| Driver and vehicle restrictions | Are modifications, tyres, timing devices, licence status and alcohol rules specified? | A breach can void or reduce protection and may allow insurer recovery. |
| Recovery and mechanical failure | Is recovery included, and are mechanical failures excluded? | A car that stops without a collision may be treated differently from an accident. |
If a quotation does not answer one of these points, ask for an endorsement or written clarification before purchase. “Not stated” is not the same as covered.
What to do after an incident
- Make the scene safe. Follow marshal instructions and obtain medical help where needed.
- Record the event. Keep the session name, date, vehicle details, photographs and any incident or barrier documentation.
- Notify the correct parties promptly. Contact the organiser or circuit as required by the event terms, then notify the insurer within its policy deadline.
- Do not assume fault or settle privately. Ask the insurer how to handle a demand for Armco, venue damage, another vehicle or passenger injury.
- Preserve documents. Retain the policy schedule, endorsements, written coverage confirmation, booking contract and waiver.
The organiser’s contract may impose responsibility on the booking party even when the driver was not the person who paid. Check whose name appears on the booking before the vehicle goes on track.
Decision guide: when separate cover is sensible
You have only ordinary road insurance
Do not assume you are covered. First check for a Nordschleife, private toll-road, track-day, testing or competitive-driving exclusion. If any applies, ask whether an event-specific endorsement is available; otherwise, treat own-car and circuit damage as uninsured until confirmed.
Your policy covers tourist driving but not closed events
Use that permission only for the named session and circuit. A closed day, timed activity or instruction package may fall outside the permission even if it takes place on the same asphalt.
The organiser offers limited insurance
Read the monetary limits and negligence standard. The Nürburgring driving-experience terms publish participant and third-party sums, but leave participants liable for track, buildings, equipment and barriers and do not cover gross negligence, intent or amounts above the limits.
You are using a rental or borrowed car
Confirm cover separately. Rental-car terms, the owner’s policy and an event organiser’s waiver can allocate damage differently from a policy covering a personally owned vehicle.
The safest practical test is simple: can you show written confirmation naming the exact Nürburgring circuit, session, vehicle, driver and liabilities you are trying to insure? If not, you have a requirement to investigate, not evidence of cover.
