Their effect on electric-vehicle (EV) charging is indirect: EVs draw from the shared National Electricity Market, where wind, solar, gas, storage, demand and interconnectors are balanced together. Smart charging can move some charging to periods when renewable output is high, but no household charging session can be guaranteed to come from a particular wind farm.
South Australia already runs on a high renewable share
The starting point matters. The Government of South Australia reports that renewables supplied over 75% of the state’s net electricity generation in 2025. For the 2024/25 financial year, it reports wind at around 45% of South Australia’s electricity and solar photovoltaic generation at over 32%. These figures use the government’s stated periods and measures; they should not be treated as identical statistics or added without checking the underlying definitions.

Wind and rooftop or utility-scale solar often complement one another. Solar output is concentrated in daylight hours, while wind can produce power at other times. When wind output is strong, the system can reduce reliance on gas generation or export electricity through interconnectors. AEMO reported that South Australian gas-powered electricity production fell 4.2% in 2024–25 compared with the previous year, with greater wind availability and other sources contributing to the change.

Which new wind projects are actually coming?
Project labels matter because a proposed megawatt figure is not the same as operating generation. AEMO’s 2025 South Australian Electricity Report lists the following Capacity Investment Scheme projects at different stages of certainty:

There is also operating capacity. AEMO says Goyder South was commissioned in May 2025, and the South Australian state register lists 413 MW of installed capacity. The register lists established projects including the 210 MW Port Augusta Renewable Energy Park. It also states that no licensed offshore wind farms are operating in South Australian waters.
As projects move from announcement to construction, their connection agreements, final design, storage arrangements and commissioning dates can change. Treat the table as a snapshot of project status, not a promise of a fixed delivery schedule.
What “100% renewable” means in the state’s target
South Australia describes an aspiration to achieve 100% net renewable electricity by 2027. The calculation is across a year: renewable generation over the year would match or exceed the state’s annual electricity consumption. It is not a promise that every hour, or every individual home, will be supplied entirely by wind and solar.
The government identifies several contributors: commissioning new wind and solar, adding dispatchable capacity, and completing Project EnergyConnect Stage 2. In practice, annual net accounting can coexist with hours in which gas generation, imports or stored energy are needed.

Why more wind does not mean constant power
A wind farm’s nameplate capacity is its maximum output under suitable conditions. Actual production changes with wind speed, weather, maintenance and network constraints. AEMO gives a clear South Australian example: from 26 to 29 June 2025, average wind generation was less than 10% of the state’s maximum wind capacity.
Low-wind periods can occur when winter solar output is also relatively low. AEMO therefore says gas generation remains important for reliability during such conditions. More turbines increase the amount of renewable energy available over time; they do not make the output flat or guarantee that every charger will be supplied by wind at the instant it is plugged in.

AEMO’s 2026 Integrated System Plan describes a least-cost National Electricity Market pathway based on renewable generation connected through transmission, firmed by storage and backed up by gas. Demand management is another part of that system. For South Australia, the practical combination is more generation, stronger networks, batteries or other storage, flexible generation and the ability to shift some demand.
How wind generation reaches an EV
EV charging is a growing electricity load. AEMO’s 2026 planning material includes half-hourly regional aggregate EV-charging demand, and its 2025 South Australian report says EV adoption increases electricity demand. Depending on how much generation and network capacity is built, that additional load could also affect gas generation.
The electricity system balances supply and demand across many generators and regions. If wind farms are producing strongly while your car charges, their output may be part of the mix serving the grid. But electrons are not tagged to a specific wind farm at a household socket, and the available evidence cannot assign an individual charging session to one project. A retailer’s renewable certificate or tariff is a separate contractual accounting matter, not proof of a physical wind-to-vehicle path.

Smart charging: what it can and cannot do
Smart charging changes the timing or power level of a charging session in response to a schedule, electricity price, household solar output, grid signal or vehicle state of charge. It can make EV demand easier for the grid to manage and can increase the chance that charging occurs during periods of abundant renewable generation. It cannot manufacture wind when the weather is calm.

The guideline discusses control through a charger app, a home-energy-management system or an aggregator. Depending on the equipment and enrolment, a signal can reduce, pause or resume charging, or align charging with photovoltaic production.
Set up a managed home-charging routine
- Check the vehicle first. Confirm the car’s maximum AC- charging rate, connector, minimum state-of-charge needs and whether it supports scheduled charging.
- Assess the household circuit. A licensed electrician must install a dedicated charger. The electrician should check switchboard capacity, cable routing, protection and whether other large loads could run at the same time.
- Choose the control method. Use the charger’s app, the vehicle’s schedule, a home-energy-management system or an approved aggregator. Confirm what data and permissions the service requires.
- Set a departure deadline. A deadline lets the system delay charging while still reaching the required state of charge before a trip.
- Define an override. Keep an immediate-charge option for emergencies, long trips or unusually low renewable output. Managed charging should remain convenient rather than becoming a reliability problem for the driver.
- Review actual behaviour. Check whether charging is being curtailed, delayed or started at the expected times, and adjust the schedule for seasonal driving and household demand.
Choosing where to charge
Australian Government guidance says around 80% of reported EV charging in Australia occurs at home. A standard power point may be adequate for drivers with modest daily travel and long parking periods. A dedicated AC unit is faster and can provide the communications needed for smart charging, but it is not essential for every driver.

For a dedicated home unit, a 7 kW class charger is a common category, but the appropriate rating depends on the car, household supply and driving pattern. A larger rating does not make the vehicle charge faster than its onboard charger allows, and it may require more substantial electrical work.
Public charging across South Australia
The South Australian Government says the RAA/Chargefox statewide network has more than 550 chargers at more than 140 stations, including 100 regional locations. The network includes destination, rapid and ultra-rapid sites. The government-supported smart-charging trials concluded by 2025.

Counts and operational status can change. Before a trip, check the current network map or app for the connector your vehicle uses, live availability, pricing, opening access and any time limits. Regional coverage reduces the planning burden, but it does not remove the need to allow for a busy or temporarily unavailable station.

Generation is useful only when the network can move it to customers or storage. Project EnergyConnect is a 900-kilometre interconnector between South Australia and New South Wales. AEMO’s October 2026 update says it began progressive operation from 1 October 2026 as testing opportunities permit, with full commissioning expected by the end of 2027. It should not be described as already operating at full capacity.
The interconnector can support transfers between regions and connect generation and storage to a wider set of consumers. In AEMO Group Manager, Operations Resilience Teresa Smit’s words: “Transmission connects new generation and storage to the grid, helping move electricity from where it is generated to where it is needed and allowing lower-cost electricity to be shared between regions.”
Storage absorbs surplus renewable output and releases it later. Transmission can export South Australian energy when local production exceeds demand, or import electricity when wind and solar are weak. Together with flexible gas generation and demand response, those tools reduce the reliability risk created by variable output.

What this means for an EV owner
If you charge at home overnight
Your car will use the grid mix available during those hours. A timer can avoid a household peak or take advantage of a price signal, but it cannot identify electrons from a particular wind farm. If your home has solar, a compatible energy-management system can prioritize charging from on-site production, subject to the vehicle and inverter settings.

If you need a fast public charge
Use the station that fits your route and vehicle. Rapid charging is designed to reduce waiting time, not to wait for a low-wind or high-wind interval. The grid still supplies the station through the regional mix, which may include wind, solar, storage, gas and interstate transfers.
If you want to support renewable-friendly charging
Choose equipment and software that can schedule charging, set a departure deadline and respond to solar or demand signals. Keep enough flexibility for travel needs. The strongest system benefit comes from many vehicles shifting part of their load, not from expecting one vehicle to follow one generator continuously.
Limits to keep in mind
- Project status, commissioning dates and installed capacity can change as approvals, finance, construction and grid connections progress.
- Wind and solar percentages quoted by government apply to specified years or financial years and measures; they are not hourly supply guarantees.
- A 100% net-renewable annual target does not mean every hour is renewable-only.
- Charger availability, network counts and station access change, especially during travel peaks or maintenance.
- Smart charging can shift demand, but it cannot guarantee wind-powered charging or eliminate the need for firming resources.
- No household savings, emissions figure or direct wind-to-EV allocation should be assumed without a separate, clearly defined calculation.
The practical outlook
New wind farms should increase the amount of renewable energy South Australia can produce and reduce the frequency with which gas is needed when wind conditions are favourable. Their value will depend on transmission, storage, flexible generation and demand management as much as on turbine capacity. EVs add demand to that system, while smart chargers give households a way to make some of that demand more flexible.
For drivers, the useful takeaway is straightforward: charge where and when your vehicle needs it, use scheduling when it is convenient, and check live public-charger information before a trip. The state’s transition is a coordinated grid change, not a dedicated wire from a new wind farm to an individual car.
