Which new diesel engines are scheduled for 2027?

These are manufacturer schedules, not confirmation that every truck configuration will be orderable or delivered on the same date. Check the vehicle maker for model-specific fitment and local availability.

Why the list has four, not five
Detroit’s Gen 6 family includes a DD16, but its production is scheduled to follow in January 2028, so it does not fit a 2027 list. Cummins’ next-generation B platform is also now expected to launch in January 2028. The company’s March 2025 B7.2 announcement initially projected North American full production in 2027; the later launch-plan update supersedes that timing, and says the current B6.7 will remain available through 2027. The four named engines are therefore the supported 2027 count in the manufacturer schedules reviewed—not a guarantee that no other manufacturer will announce another engine.

What “2027” means for buyers and fleets
Production timing is not the same as truck availability
Cummins distinguishes limited production from full production: the X10’s full-production target is Q3 2027, and the X15’s is Q4 2027. Those are company projections, not completed milestones. Cummins says timing is phased around OEM launch plans and could be adjusted if the final EPA rule materially differs from the company’s preliminary reading of the proposed rule. Detroit’s January 2027 date is an announced availability target, not proof that every truck configuration will reach a dealer or customer then.
Check compatibility at the vehicle level
An engine’s name alone does not establish that it fits a particular truck, duty cycle, or order slot. Ask the truck OEM or dealer which engine configurations it plans to offer, when orders and deliveries are expected, and which ratings and emissions equipment apply to the exact vehicle.

What is changing in the new engines?
Cummins X10 and X15
Cummins says the 2027 X10 and X15 are designed for improved fuel economy with similar diesel exhaust fluid consumption. The company also says these applications use its Twin Module aftertreatment: two assemblies in a DOC-DPF-SCR layout with electric heating. That is an emissions-system feature of the Cummins engines, not a separate engine or a fifth launch. These descriptions are manufacturer claims; the cited announcements do not provide independent comparative fuel-economy results.

Detroit describes Gen 6 as a refinement of the previous generation, with changes aimed at efficiency and emissions compliance. Daimler Truck North America’s announcement gives a new Gen 6 torque rating of up to 1,900 lb-ft; “up to” matters, and the figure should not be read as the rating of every DD13 or DD15 configuration. How to compare the four engines responsibly
The announced schedule and broad application are not enough to identify the best engine for a particular operation. Before comparing bids or planning a fleet transition, get configuration-specific information on:
- Vehicle fitment: the truck models and applications each OEM will offer with the engine.
- Ratings: horsepower and torque for the exact engine and vehicle configuration, rather than a family-wide maximum.
- Emissions equipment: the applicable aftertreatment layout and operating requirements.
- Delivery and transition: when the vehicle can be ordered and delivered, and how long the predecessor engine will remain an option.
- Operating economics: fuel, DEF, maintenance, and service assumptions for the intended duty cycle.
The announcements do not establish a like-for-like ranking for total cost, real-world fuel economy, reliability, or maintenance performance. Those judgments require configuration-specific terms and evidence beyond the launch claims.

What is confirmed—and what is not
The four-engine list and timing above reflect manufacturer announcements available for this article. Cummins’ dates are planned milestones, and Detroit’s are announced targets; neither schedule proves actual delivery timing for every model. Confirm final ratings and vehicle fitment with the relevant OEM before making an order or replacement decision. Detroit and Daimler Truck North America reported that 1.2 million Detroit heavy-duty engines had been sold for on-highway and vocational applications in their February 2026 announcement; that company-reported historical total provides context, not a comparison of the new engines’ performance.
