If you’re searching for a used Jaguar with about £1,500 to spend on the car itself, start with the X-Type. It is the clearest candidate for a low-budget search, but the cheapest examples can have an expired MOT or be sold as seen. Treat £1,500 as a purchase budget, not a safe all-in ownership budget: condition, service evidence and likely repairs matter more than the badge or asking price.
No current listing sample establishes which Jaguars are actually available at this price, or their mileage and condition. Check local adverts and assess each car individually rather than assuming a sound example will be waiting at £1,500.

Which cheap Jaguar should you buy?
Use the X-Type as your first search, then consider an S-Type or XJ only if the particular car’s history and condition justify the risk. The model reviews below offer useful context on what to inspect, but their historical prices are not current market valuations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Model | Why consider it | Checks to prioritise |
|---|---|---|
| Jaguar X-Type | The most plausible starting point for a low-price Jaguar search; described by What Car? as good to drive. | Automatic gearbox, four-wheel-drive transfer box where fitted, door latches, key fob, clutch and suspension; check MOT and service history. |
| Jaguar S-Type | A larger, comfort-oriented alternative; What Car? describes 2004 as a major facelift and later cars as better than the earliest examples. | Ignition-coil, engine-wear and electrical concerns, plus evidence that applicable recalls have been addressed. |
| Jaguar XJ | A tempting route to a large luxury saloon for little money, but its low purchase price can conceal substantial running and repair commitments. | Checks depend on generation; for 2003–2009 cars, listen for suspension noises and check electronics, smoke, corrosion and recall history. |
Jaguar X-Type: the most realistic place to begin
What Car?’s X-Type used review says the model can be found at very low prices, while warning that the cheapest cars may have expired MOTs or be sold as seen. Its roughly £2,000–£3,000 figure for facelifted cars is a historical review price, not a current 2026 asking-price guide or proof that a sound example is available for £1,500.
#1 Best Overall
- Package dimensions (L x W x H): 10.6 cm x 11.6 cm x 24.0 cm
- Package Weight: 360g
- Country of origin: China
- Number of packs: 1
The X-Type reliability review highlights the automatic gearbox and, on four-wheel-drive cars, the transfer box. It also mentions door-latch, key-fob, clutch and suspension concerns. Do not assume that a later registration has eliminated risk: check the specific car’s behaviour, paperwork and repair history.
Jaguar S-Type: comfort depends on condition
What Car?’s S-Type review identifies 2004 as a major facelift and regards later examples as better than the earliest cars. That is useful context when comparing generations, not a guarantee that a later car is sound.
Rank #2
- Plastic model to build to stick and paint on scale 1/24
- 110 pieces to assemble, difficulty level 3/5 for beginner model makers
- High level of detail, decal board included
- Paints, glue and accessories not included
- Multilingual and detailed instructions in color type BD. Other collectible vehicles
The S-Type reliability review reports early ignition-coil, engine-wear and electrical issues and flags recalls involving safety-related components. Its recommendations and engine-cost discussion are dated; they should not be treated as a current model ranking or present-day repair-cost guide. A low asking price does not establish that outstanding work will be affordable.

Jaguar XJ: budget for more than the purchase
The 1997–2003 XJ review describes early petrol cars as available below £2,000 in its historical market snapshot, while noting that a good, low-mileage example with a full service history cost more. Its central warning is financial: buying an XJ cheaply does not make it cheap to run.
Rank #3
- Brand new box
- Real rubber tires.
- Detailed interior, exterior.
- Die-cast metal body and chassis,
- Dimensions approximately L-2.75 inches long.
For 2003–2009 XJs, What Car?’s reliability review recommends attention to suspension noises, electronics, smoke, corrosion and recall history. A separate 2010–2019 XJ review concerns a later, more expensive generation and reports high running costs with reliability varying by model. Its findings should not be applied to the older XJs that might appear in a £1,500 search.
What to check before viewing or paying
Run checks on the exact registration
Ask the seller for the registration before travelling. Use the GOV.UK used-vehicle checks to check the registration details against official records, review MOT status and history, and check for serious safety recalls. GOV.UK advises: “Check the MOT status and history matches the details you’ve been given.” A registration check is specific to that car, so do not rely on a general model description or an old advert.

- Highly-detailed die-cast precision model
- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Officially licensed product by Maisto International
- Collectible quality True-to-scale detailed vehicle

Verify the car and its paperwork
- Inspect the V5C and confirm that its identifying details match the car and the information supplied by the seller.
- Compare service records and invoices with the car’s age, mileage and condition. Look for evidence of repairs relevant to its model and symptoms, rather than relying on verbal assurances.
- Consider whether the engine and transmission suit your use, and whether the car’s condition is credible at the asking price.
- Account for likely repair exposure and ongoing ownership costs separately from the money available to buy the car.
Get an uncertain car inspected
If you cannot confidently judge its mechanical condition or repair history, arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing. Use the inspection to assess the specific car; a model’s reputation or clean-looking advert cannot substitute for checking its actual condition.
How to make a £1,500 Jaguar shortlist
- Search X-Types first. Treat this as the most plausible starting point, not a promise that the budget will buy a sound example.
- Compare evidence, not just prices. Weigh the asking price against MOT history, service records, documented repairs and visible condition.
- Use model-specific checks. Pay particular attention to the X-Type gearbox and transfer box where applicable; the S-Type’s reported engine, ignition and electrical issues; and the XJ checks relevant to its generation.
- Check the exact car’s registration and recalls. Verify its identifying details and V5C before paying.
- Walk away or inspect further if the history is unclear. A low price does not compensate for an unknown mechanical condition or repair commitment you cannot absorb.
There is no current like-for-like cost data establishing the likely repair bills for £1,500 Jaguars. Older review prices and cost discussions can provide context, but they are not reliable current market or ownership-cost figures.
