That figure is a reported claim, not an independently verified test result in the available coverage.
What is the jet-powered Harley?
It is a one-off custom built by Bob Maddox around the design of a 1929 Harley-Davidson track racer—not a production Harley model. The Drive reported in November 2022 that Maddox had built it more than a decade earlier. The motorcycle uses a twin pulsejet setup, according to contemporaneous coverage by TechEBlog.

A pulsejet produces propulsion through repeated combustion pulses. That is different from a turbine motorcycle whose engine’s power is delivered through a drivetrain. The phrase “pure thrust” describes the pulsejet custom’s propulsion; it should not be taken to mean that every motorcycle described as jet-powered works the same way.
How fast was it reported to go?
The 60-mph claim
The Drive wrote that “it’s said to reach 60 miles per hour in about five seconds.” The wording matters: the source reports a claim, but does not provide an instrumented test, testing conditions, or an independent verification. TechEBlog also repeated an approximate five-second 0–60 claim in 2010; that shows the figure circulated, not that it was independently measured.

Other reported speed figures
The Drive also recounted Maddox’s claim in a 2011 video that the bike could cover a quarter-mile at about 120 mph. The same report said Maddox was unsure of the motorcycle’s top speed. Neither number is established there as a verified test result.
How does a pulsejet motorcycle work?
In a pulsejet, air and fuel are ignited in repeated bursts, producing thrust. The Drive described Maddox’s motorcycle as using regular 87-octane gasoline and characterized pulsejets as having few moving parts, but inefficient operation and extreme noise. Those are the report’s descriptions; it supplied no efficiency measurement or sound-level reading.

WIRED’s 2009 interview with Maddox offers background on his pulsejet work, but it covers an earlier bicycle, not this Harley. Discussing that bicycle’s engines, Maddox said: “I stacked two 60-pound thrust engines and opened a hole between the combustion chambers and that makes them cycle as one.” That quote should not be read as a technical description of the Harley’s specific arrangement.

How loud is it?
The Drive described the motorcycle as extremely loud and said earplugs were needed to start it. No measured decibel figure was reported, so there is no supported numerical sound level to cite. Earplugs are not a substitute for assessing the hazards of operating a loud experimental vehicle.

Is this the Harley that set a land-speed record?
No. Maddox’s pulsejet custom is separate from Harley-Davidson’s 1970 Sportster Streamliner. Harley-Davidson’s official history describes the Streamliner as using a heavily modified 89-cubic-inch Sportster V-twin. It recounts Cal Rayborn’s 255.380-mph run on October 15, 1970, followed by a next-day average of 265.492 mph. Those record figures belong to the Streamliner, not Maddox’s pulsejet motorcycle.
