This equipment reduces exposure to impact, abrasion, wind, debris and poor conspicuity; it does not make riding risk-free.
Helmet laws differ by state, so check the rule where you ride. The checklist below follows federal guidance from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and recommendations from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).

The everyday motorcycle gear checklist
- Helmet: A correctly fitting helmet with the required U.S. DOT FMVSS No. 218 certification wording on its label.
- Eye protection: A helmet face shield, goggles or suitable riding glasses, depending on your helmet and riding conditions.
- Jacket and pants: Sturdy protective coverage for both arms and legs; purpose-built motorcycle garments can add construction features and armor.
- Gloves: Full-finger motorcycle gloves that preserve control while adding hand coverage.
- Footwear: Boots or shoes extending high enough to cover the ankles; MSF recommends boots over the ankle.
- Visibility: Bright colors, reflective material, strips or decals, and potentially a light-colored helmet to help other road users see you.
Wear every item on every ride, including short commutes. A low-speed fall, a sudden gravel patch or an object striking your face can happen close to home.
Why this gear matters on ordinary trips
NHTSA reports that 6,228 motorcyclists were killed in the United States in 2024, accounting for 16% of all traffic fatalities. For 2024, its figures put a motorcyclist’s fatality risk per vehicle mile traveled at almost 27 times that of a passenger-car occupant and injury risk at almost five times. These are national, dated statistics—not a prediction for an individual rider—but they explain why routine riding deserves the same preparation as a long trip.

NHTSA also reports that 74% of riders wore DOT-compliant helmets in 2023. Helmet use is associated in NHTSA’s synthesis of studies published from 2003 through 2019 with a 22%–42% reduction in motorcycle rider fatalities and a 41%–69% reduction in brain injuries. Those ranges summarize earlier research; they are not a guarantee for a particular crash or rider.
NHTSA puts the helmet’s role plainly: “If you’re ever in a serious motorcycle crash, the best hope you have for protecting your brain is a motorcycle helmet.” MSF adds that “A full-face helmet provides the best protection.” A full-face design generally covers more of the head and face than an open-face design, but the helmet still has to fit correctly and carry the required U.S. certification label.
How to choose and fit a compliant helmet
Check the U.S. DOT certification label
For U.S. street riding, look for the manufacturer’s certification label stating that the helmet meets FMVSS No. 218. NHTSA does not pre-approve helmets. Manufacturers self-certify compliance, while NHTSA tests some helmets and can recall products found not to comply. A novelty helmet that lacks the required certification wording is not an acceptable substitute where DOT compliance is required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA Snell label or another construction designation does not replace the federal DOT label when your jurisdiction requires a DOT-compliant helmet. Treat any additional certification information as supplementary, not as permission to ignore the FMVSS No. 218 wording.
Use a fit check before you buy
- Measure your head according to the helmet maker’s instructions, then use that measurement only as a starting size.
- Try the helmet on with the head centered. The interior should contact your head evenly without a painful pressure point.
- Fasten the retention strap exactly as intended. A loose or unfastened strap can let the helmet move or come off in a crash.
- Shake your head and move the helmet by hand. It should stay stable rather than slide independently over your scalp.
- Keep the helmet on for several minutes. Increasing pain, numbness or a sharp localized pressure point indicates a poor shape or size, even if the helmet does not move.
- Check that your eyes are centered in the opening, the face shield operates fully, and the helmet does not interfere with glasses or other required equipment.
Helmet shapes vary between manufacturers, so a nominal size is not universal. Choose the model that fits your head securely and remains comfortable enough that you will wear it on every trip.

Eye protection: face shield, goggles or glasses
Eye protection prevents wind, dust, insects and other foreign objects from disrupting vision. NHTSA says a face shield protects the eyes from wind and foreign objects, and MSF includes eye protection in its basic protective dress.
Match protection to the helmet
- Full-face or modular helmet with a usable shield: Keep the shield closed when moving whenever conditions allow. Confirm that it seals and operates without obstructing your view.
- Open-face helmet: Use a compatible shield, goggles or riding glasses. Ordinary sunglasses may not provide the coverage, retention or impact features of dedicated riding eyewear.
- Half-helmet or minimal coverage: Eye protection becomes especially important because the helmet itself covers less of the face. It does not compensate for the reduced head and facial coverage.
No single eye-protection format covers every face and weather condition equally. Select equipment that stays in place, works with your helmet and prescription eyewear if needed, and leaves a clear field of vision.

Wear sturdy clothing over your arms and legs. NHTSA identifies leather or heavy denim as examples of coverage and notes that protective riding gear can also help prevent dehydration. Coverage is not the same as crash-proof performance: ordinary denim or a particular garment cannot be represented as preventing serious injury.
Purpose-built motorcycle jackets and pants can offer stronger construction, closures that keep material in place and designated armor locations. NHTSA’s countermeasure guidance says well-constructed jackets and pants can prevent abrasions and bruises and discusses evidence concerning armor. The benefit depends on the garment’s construction, fit and the crash; do not assume that every jacket or pair of pants has the same protection.
Practical clothing decisions
- Keep sleeves and trouser legs long enough to cover the skin in your normal riding position.
- Choose a jacket and pants that do not ride up or expose the waist, wrists or ankles when seated.
- Check how closures, pockets and armor interact with your motorcycle controls and riding posture.
- For hot weather, look for ventilation while retaining coverage; for rain or cold, add layers that do not restrict movement or obscure controls.
- Use garments that you can tolerate for the entire trip. Gear left at home provides no protection.
Gloves protect hands and preserve control
Wear full-finger motorcycle gloves on every ride. NHTSA notes that gloves can help with grip and crash protection, while MSF lists gloves as part of protective dress. A suitable pair should let you operate the clutch, brake, throttle, switches and phone-free navigation controls without bunching or slipping.

Try gloves while holding the handlebars. Fingers should reach the controls without excess material, seams should not create painful pressure, and the wrist closure should keep the glove from sliding off. Match insulation and ventilation to the weather, but do not trade away secure fit or full-finger coverage for convenience.
Footwear that covers the ankles
Wear boots or shoes high enough to cover the ankles. MSF recommends over-ankle boots, and NHTSA includes ankle-covering footwear in its motorcycle safety guidance. Secure laces, straps or closures so they cannot interfere with the controls, chain or other moving parts.
Choose footwear that stays on your feet, gives you a stable platform when stopping, and works with the motorcycle’s foot controls. Low-cut casual shoes leave the ankle exposed; they are not equivalent to over-ankle riding footwear.
Visibility: help drivers detect you
Protective coverage and visibility solve different problems. Bright colors, reflective materials, reflective strips or decals, and a light-colored helmet are recommended by NHTSA and MSF to help riders stand out. Use them on the parts of your clothing and motorcycle that other road users are most likely to see, especially in low light or heavy traffic.
Visibility aids do not grant the right of way and cannot prevent every collision. Keep normal lane-position, speed and lighting choices appropriate for conditions; reflective material is an additional cue, not a substitute for attentive riding.

Comparing everyday gear choices
| Gear area | Common options | What to check | Limits and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head | Full-face, modular, open-face or other helmet designs | FMVSS No. 218 DOT wording, secure fit, stable retention and compatibility with eyewear | Coverage, ventilation, weather comfort and field of view vary; a Snell label does not replace the DOT label where required |
| Eyes | Face shield, goggles or riding glasses | Clear vision, retention, compatibility with the helmet and protection from wind and debris | Coverage is not identical among formats; open-face helmets require separate eye protection |
| Torso and limbs | Purpose-built jacket and pants, leather or heavy denim coverage, layered clothing | Arm and leg coverage, fit while seated, construction, closures, ventilation and any armor | Generic clothing is not crash-proof; more coverage may increase heat or bulk |
| Hands | Full-finger motorcycle gloves for warm, cool or wet conditions | Grip, control feel, retention and coverage of fingers and wrists | Insulation and waterproofing can reduce ventilation or fine control if the fit is poor |
| Feet | Over-ankle motorcycle boots or ankle-covering shoes | Secure retention, ankle coverage, stable footing and control compatibility | Casual low-cut shoes leave the ankle uncovered |
| Visibility | Bright clothing, reflective panels, strips, decals or a light-colored helmet | Contrast with the environment and visibility from likely traffic angles | Visibility aids supplement, rather than replace, defensive riding |
A routine pre-ride gear check
- Confirm the helmet label and inspect the fit: it should sit level, remain stable and have its retention strap fastened.
- Close the face shield or put on goggles or riding glasses before moving.
- Fasten every jacket, pant, glove and boot closure; check that no sleeve, cuff or lace can catch a control.
- Make sure the jacket and pants still cover your arms, legs, wrists and ankles in your seated riding position.
- Look at your visibility: bright or reflective areas should not be hidden by a backpack, rain layer or other garment.
- Check that the gear allows full steering, braking, shifting and head movement before entering traffic.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying by label size alone
Problem: The helmet or gloves move, pinch or leave gaps despite having the advertised size.
Correction: Use measurements to narrow the choice, then perform the stability and comfort checks while wearing the actual equipment.
Assuming any helmet is “DOT approved”
Problem: A novelty helmet or a helmet with only a non-federal label is treated as compliant.
Correction: Look for the manufacturer’s wording that the helmet meets FMVSS No. 218, and verify the helmet law in your state.
Using a shield or glasses that do not stay put
Problem: Wind, fog, debris or poor fit interrupts vision.

How to choose gear for your riding conditions
Use five questions when comparing any two items: Does it fit and stay in place? What body area does it cover? What certification or construction information is actually stated? Will it remain comfortable in your weather and trip length? Does it work with your helmet, controls and other clothing?
For a daily commuter, ventilation, rain compatibility and easy storage may determine whether protective gear is worn consistently. For night or low-visibility travel, reflective material and a contrasting helmet become more important. For changing temperatures, layer underneath or over protective garments without creating loose material that can interfere with controls. These are practical selection decisions, not universal product ratings; the available federal and MSF guidance does not establish one best apparel brand, model or rating threshold for every rider.

Bottom line for an everyday rider
Put on a properly fitted FMVSS No. 218 DOT-labeled helmet, eye protection, sturdy arm-and-leg coverage, full-finger gloves and ankle-covering footwear before every ride. Add bright or reflective elements to improve conspicuity, and choose garments that stay secure and comfortable in your actual riding position and weather. Check your state’s helmet law separately: federal guidance supplies the equipment baseline, but jurisdiction-specific requirements determine what is legally required where you ride.
