The Sprint pays its top nine finishers, with a maximum of 12 points; the Sunday winner receives 25. Winning both races makes 37 points available at one Grand Prix weekend. Because the Sunday race is worth more and awards points to 15th place, a Sprint can swing the standings without outweighing a strong Grand Prix result by itself.
How MotoGP Sprint points are awarded
The Sprint is a separate championship race, not a qualifying session or a bonus attached to Sunday’s result. Its finishing order produces its own points allocation. Only the first nine riders score, so finishing 10th or lower in the Sprint adds nothing to a rider’s championship total.

This scale is the one presented in MotoGP’s official 2025 points explainer. It means a Sprint win is less than half the value of a Sunday win, while a ninth-place Sprint still has a small but potentially important championship value. The Sunday race has a broader scoring window, extending one point to 15th.
Where Sprint points sit in the championship
After each race, a rider’s Sprint score is added to the points earned in Sunday Grands Prix and to any points earned in earlier rounds. The rider with the highest accumulated total at the end of the season is World Champion, according to MotoGP’s championship explainer.

One rider, one combined total
There is no separate “Sprint championship” for riders. Standings tables may show Sprint results in a separate column for clarity, but those points are ultimately part of the same rider total used for the title. A rider who wins a Sprint and then retires from Sunday keeps the Sprint points; a rider who scores on Sunday but misses the Sprint keeps the Sunday points.
Do not confuse rider points with other classifications
Qualifying positions determine the starting grid under the format described by MotoGP’s 2025 explainer, but qualifying itself does not award championship points in the scoring table above. Team and manufacturer championships are separate classifications with their own counting rules. When comparing two riders for the World Championship, use each rider’s accumulated total rather than a team’s score, a manufacturer’s score or a fantasy-game scoring system.
Ties in the final standings
If riders finish the season level on points, MotoGP’s stated tie-break procedure compares their best results: the number of wins first, then second-place finishes, then third places and so on. If the riders remain tied after comparing their results, the later date on which the highest placing was achieved takes precedence. A Sprint result therefore can affect not only the points total but also the result record used to separate a tie.
How much a Sprint can change a weekend
The two races create a maximum of 37 points for one rider at one Grand Prix weekend: 12 from winning the Sprint and 25 from winning Sunday’s race. That is a ceiling, not an automatic allocation; a rider must finish in the relevant scoring positions in both races to collect it.
The Sunday race remains the larger opportunity
A Sunday victory is worth 13 more points than a Sprint victory. The difference matters in a title fight because one dominant Grand Prix can erase a meaningful portion of a rival’s lead, whereas a Sprint win alone cannot produce the same swing. Sprint points still matter because they are earned before Sunday and accumulate over every round that includes a Sprint.

Finishing positions can produce different gaps
The table also shows why a rider’s objective is not simply “win or score nothing.” A second-place Sprint earns nine points, while third earns seven; a small change in finishing order can therefore alter the championship margin. In the Grand Prix, points continue through 15th, so a rider who finishes outside the Sprint’s top nine may still limit the damage with a Sunday result.
A simple weekend comparison
Suppose Rider A wins both races and Rider B finishes second in both. Rider A scores 37 points for the weekend, while Rider B scores 29, creating an eight-point weekend difference. If Rider A wins the Sprint but Rider B wins Sunday, Rider A receives 12 and Rider B receives 25 from those respective victories; the Sunday result produces the larger single-race advantage. These are arithmetic illustrations using the official scale, not predictions about any particular event.

To evaluate whether a Sprint result changes a championship fight, calculate the points after both races at each round rather than looking only at Sunday’s classification.
- Record the pre-weekend totals. Start with the official rider standings immediately before the round.
- Add Sprint points separately. Apply the Sprint scale to each rider’s finishing position, awarding points only through ninth.
- Add Sunday points. Apply the Grand Prix scale through 15th, including riders who did not score in the Sprint.
- Recalculate the gap. Subtract the trailing rider’s new total from the leader’s new total. The gap can shrink, grow or change hands before the weekend is complete.
- Multiply only when the schedule is known. For future rounds, use the number of Sprints and Grands Prix actually remaining on the applicable calendar; do not assume every round has the same format.
- Check tie-break implications. If totals become equal, compare wins and then progressively lower finishing positions under MotoGP’s published procedure.
Example of a points swing
Imagine a 10-point gap before a weekend, with the leader ahead. If the leader finishes fifth in the Sprint and 10th on Sunday, the leader adds five plus six points. If the challenger finishes second in the Sprint and third on Sunday, the challenger adds nine plus 16. The challenger gains 14 points on the weekend and turns the 10-point deficit into a four-point lead. The calculation demonstrates why a Sprint can change the order even though Sunday carries the larger scale.
What information is still needed for a live title calculation
A precise answer for a particular season requires the current standings, the completed results, the remaining calendar and the regulations in force for that season. The official material available for this explanation does not provide a verified 2026 standings snapshot or a verified 2026 season points maximum, so a current title probability cannot be inferred from the scoring table alone.

Why teams and riders treat the Sprint differently
The extra race changes the competitive shape of a weekend. A rider has another opportunity to gain points, but also another start, first-lap battle and crash exposure before the Grand Prix. The championship value is therefore tied to both the reward scale and the risk of losing Sunday performance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a rider chasing the leader
A challenger can use the Sprint to reduce a deficit before Sunday, forcing the leader to respond over two races instead of one. A top-nine finish is valuable when the alternative is handing the leader a free increase in the gap. However, an aggressive attempt to gain a few Sprint positions can carry consequences if it compromises the motorcycle, the rider or Sunday’s race.
For the points leader
The leader may prioritize a controlled finish that protects points rather than taking unnecessary risks for the win. Because the Sprint and Grand Prix are scored independently, a difficult Sprint does not mathematically determine Sunday’s result, but it can alter tactical pressure, tyre allocation decisions and the points gap entering the main race.
For riders outside the title fight
A Sprint provides an additional chance to score a result that would otherwise be unavailable on a single-race weekend. A rider who normally fights around the edge of the Sunday points can target the Sprint’s shorter distance and still add to the season total by finishing ninth or higher.
What the MotoGP weekend format means for points
MotoGP introduced Sprints as a regular feature in 2023. MotoGP’s format explainer describes the Sprint as approximately half the distance of the full race. Under the format covered by that explainer, the Sprint takes place on Saturday.

Qualifying and the starting grid in the described format
In the format described by the 2025 explainer, qualifying sets the grid for both the Sprint and the Sunday Grand Prix. The Sprint’s finishing order determines its points, but it does not set a separate Sunday grid under that arrangement. This distinction is important when reading a results sheet: a Sprint result is a race result with championship points, while qualifying is a grid-setting session.
Why the format matters to championship arithmetic
The number of Sprints on a calendar determines how many additional scoring opportunities exist. A season with more Sprint rounds offers more chances to collect up to 12 points per round, but the exact season maximum depends on the number of Grands Prix and the rules adopted for that season. Calendar size and format should therefore be verified before converting the per-weekend maximum into a season total.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes for the 2027 format
In an announcement dated October 7, 2026, MotoGP said the 2027 weekend format will add qualifying for the Sprint and use separate grids for the Sprint and the Grand Prix. That is a change to how riders qualify and start the two races.
What is established
- The Sprint and Sunday Grand Prix will have separate qualifying processes under the announced 2027 format.
- The two races will use separate starting grids.
- The change affects the weekend format, so a Sprint result will no longer be interpreted through the same grid-setting arrangement described in the earlier explainer.
What is not established by the announcement
The announcement available for this topic does not say that Sprint points will be recalculated. Do not assume that the 12-9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale changes merely because qualifying and grids change. For a 2027 championship calculation, consult the regulations in force for that season and confirm both the scoring table and the number of Sprint rounds.

Common mistakes when reading Sprint standings
Counting a Sprint win as 25 points
The Sprint winner receives 12 points, not the 25 awarded to the Sunday Grand Prix winner. Treating the two victories as equal exaggerates the effect of a Saturday result.

Assuming every Sprint finisher scores
Only ninth place and higher score in the Sprint. A 10th-place Sprint is recorded as a finish but contributes zero championship points.
Adding Sprint points to a team instead of a rider
The question “How many points did the rider gain?” must be answered from the rider’s classification. Team and manufacturer standings are different tables and should not be substituted for the rider championship.
Using the Sprint to set Sunday’s grid in every season
Under the format described by MotoGP’s 2025 explainer, qualifying sets both grids. MotoGP’s 2027 announcement changes that arrangement, so season and regulation dates matter when interpreting a starting position.
Using a dated season maximum as a current fact
MotoGP’s 2025 championship explainer gave an example of up to 22 Grands Prix and a season maximum of 814 points. That figure belongs to the 2025 example. It is not a verified maximum for 2026 or 2027, because the number of rounds and applicable rules can change.
How to follow a championship over a Sprint weekend
- Check the official standings before the weekend and note the points gap.
- Confirm whether the round includes a Sprint.
- Record the Sprint result and apply points only through ninth.
- Recalculate the standings before Sunday rather than waiting for the full weekend.
- Apply the Sunday scale separately after the Grand Prix.
- Track wins and other best finishes if riders are close enough that a tie-break could matter.
- For a future round, verify the published calendar and regulations instead of extrapolating from the 2025 example.
Bottom line
MotoGP Sprint results are real World Championship results. They are added to the rider’s season total, but the Sprint’s maximum of 12 points is smaller than Sunday’s 25 and its scoring ends after ninth place. Winning both races can yield 37 points at one weekend, making Sprints capable of changing the title order across a season. The exact impact depends on the riders’ existing totals, the rounds still to run and the regulations that apply to that year, especially as MotoGP moves to separate Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying and grids in 2027.
