After the chequered flag, Verstappen told his Red Bull team, “We showed them one final time,” and urged them, “Don’t be too disappointed,” adding, “I’m certainly not disappointed,” according to Goodwood’s report.
What Verstappen said on the radio
Goodwood reported three short excerpts from Verstappen’s post-race team radio: “We showed them one final time,” “Don’t be too disappointed,” and “I’m certainly not disappointed.” The remarks were directed to his team after he won the race, with the title already decided in Norris’s favour.
These are reported excerpts, not a verified full transcript of the exchange. The FIA press-conference transcript records Verstappen’s public comments after the race, but it is not a complete team-radio transcript. Goodwood’s race report is the source for the quoted radio lines.
Verstappen won the race; Norris won the title
The distinction matters: Verstappen did not lose the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He started from pole and won, with Oscar Piastri second and Norris third, according to the FIA’s post-race record. Norris’s third place was enough to clinch the 2025 drivers’ championship. The Associated Press reported that Norris finished the season on 423 points, two ahead of Verstappen.

AP also reported that Abu Dhabi was Verstappen’s eighth race win of the 2025 season. Those results explain the radio’s mix of pride in the final race performance and acknowledgement that the championship had gone elsewhere.
What Verstappen said publicly after the finish
He felt Red Bull had maximised the weekend
In the FIA press conference, Verstappen said: “Well, honestly, we maximised everything that we could. We put it on pole, and we won the race.” He said he was “very proud again of the weekend that we had.” His comments describe a successful race weekend, not a title victory.

He kept watching for a chance in the race
Asked whether he had given up hope of winning the championship during the race, Verstappen said he kept looking at the screens to see whether something might happen. He also said the race itself had gone well and that he was enjoying driving.
He congratulated Norris and reflected on the season
Verstappen said a first championship is something drivers dream about from childhood, and described Norris and McLaren’s season together as “incredible.” He called his own season a “Massive rollercoaster” and said he was proud that Red Bull “never gave up.” He added that teams keep working even when they appear to be out of contention, because “you never know what can happen.”

On missing the title, Verstappen said it was a shame, but noted that he had not felt in the championship fight until a few rounds before the finale. He said he felt good about his own ability going into the next year. The Formula 1 transcript also records his response about race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase: Verstappen called him passionate, said he regarded him as a friend, and expected him to be emotional after the flag.
