What Makes the First-Generation Ford Bronco Different From Newer Models?

The 1966–1977 Ford Bronco was a compact, purpose-built 4x4 with removable body panels and simple launch-era mechanics. Here is how it differs from the larger 1978 redesign and the 2021 Bronco’s modern suspension.

The first-generation Ford Bronco (1966–1977) is different from newer Broncos in its scale, construction and mission. It is a compact, short-wheelbase 4×4 with standard four-wheel drive, a simple three-speed manual at launch, removable body panels and several open or pickup-style configurations. The 1978 redesign grew onto an F-Series-based platform, while the 2021 Bronco added modern suspension engineering and much more configuration complexity. Because “first generation” covers twelve model years and “newer” spans several distinct designs, the useful comparison is generation- and model-year-specific.

What “first-generation Bronco” means

Ford dates the first-generation Bronco from 1966 through 1977. It was not one unchanging specification: engines, transmissions and convenience equipment evolved during that run. Nevertheless, the basic concept remained recognizable—a compact, purpose-built four-wheel-drive utility vehicle rather than a full-size derivative of Ford’s pickup line.

For a later comparison, two reference points are especially useful. The second-generation Bronco covered 1978–1979 and represented the major size and platform change. The 2021 Bronco shows how Ford combined modern chassis technology with a still-traditional solid rear axle. Neither later example should be treated as a specification for every subsequent Bronco.

Size, wheelbase and platform: compact purpose-built vehicle versus larger successors

The original’s maneuverable dimensions

Ford describes the first Bronco as having a short wheelbase and a 33.6-foot turning diameter (Ford’s first-generation history; the page does not state a publication year for that figure). A short vehicle is easier to place on narrow trails, in tight work areas and in urban parking spaces than a larger truck-based successor. The turning-diameter figure is a concrete indication of the original’s compact maneuverability, not a claim that every 1966–1977 configuration handled identically.

The 1978 break with the original formula

Ford’s account of the 1978 redesign says the Bronco increased in length and width to provide a smoother ride and more passenger comfort. It also moved to an F-Series-based platform. That change made the second-generation vehicle materially different from the small, purpose-built first generation: more interior and road-going space, but a larger physical footprint.

Ford’s historical account reproduces Ford division general manager Don Frey describing the proposed original as “a completely new line of sports-utility vehicles.” That language captures why the first Bronco does not simply feel like an early version of a later pickup-derived SUV: its starting point was a distinct compact 4×4 category.

Configuration What it was Practical character
Roadster The basic open model Maximum exposure to the outdoors and a simple utility layout
Sport Utility A short top with a pickup-style bed; later known as the half-cab Useful for carrying cargo while retaining a compact cab area
Wagon A full-length hardtop with rear seating More enclosed passenger and cargo space than the open versions

These were not merely trim names. The roof and upper body treatment changed how the vehicle carried people, weather protection and cargo. A Roadster and a Wagon can both be first-generation Broncos yet serve very different jobs.

Factory-removable top and upper sides

Ford states that “The top and upper sides are bolted on and can be removed if desired” (Ford). The removable construction is a defining difference from an ordinary fixed-roof passenger vehicle. It also means that condition, completeness and fit of the specific top and side hardware matter when assessing an individual Bronco. A missing or modified panel can change the vehicle’s weather sealing and originality even when the chassis is otherwise correct.

Launch powertrain: simple, standard four-wheel drive

1966 equipment

At launch, Ford lists standard four-wheel drive, a three-speed manual transmission and a 170-cubic-inch, 105-horsepower six-cylinder engine. Those are original 1966 specifications, documented in Ford Motor Company’s historical account published July 1, 2020 (Ford Motor Company). The standard 4×4 system distinguishes the Bronco from two-wheel-drive utility vehicles of the period, while the three-speed manual and six-cylinder combination reflects a straightforward, mechanically direct design.

The V8 upgrade

Ford says a 289 V8 became an available upgrade in March 1966. Therefore, “a first-generation Bronco” does not automatically mean a six-cylinder vehicle. The engine fitted to a particular Bronco depends on its model year, build and subsequent changes. Any comparison involving acceleration, load use or driveline parts should identify the engine rather than relying on the generation label alone.

Changes introduced for 1973

Ford says the Bronco remained essentially unchanged until 1973, when several important options and substitutions arrived:

  • Power steering became available.
  • An automatic transmission became available.
  • A 200-cubic-inch six replaced the 170-cubic-inch six.
  • A 302 V8 option was offered with Cruise-O-Matic.

These changes do not apply to every 1966–1977 Bronco. A 1966 example and a 1973–1977 example can both be correctly called first generation while differing substantially in engine, steering and transmission equipment. When buying parts or evaluating originality, verify the model year and the actual drivetrain installed.

Suspension: early coil-spring front design versus 2021 hardware

First-generation layout

Ford’s first-generation history highlights coil-spring front suspension with radius arms. This is part of the original’s purpose-built chassis identity. It should not be confused with the suspension arrangement of the later F-Series-based 1978 model or with the 2021 Bronco’s independently specified front system.

2021 Bronco specification

Ford’s 2021 two- and four-door technical specifications list a low-mass independent front suspension and a five-link solid rear axle with a Panhard rod (2021 Bronco technical specifications). The important point is the split architecture: the front wheels use an independent arrangement, while the rear remains a solid axle located by links and a Panhard rod.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a model-year-specific comparison. It does not establish that every newer Bronco uses exactly the same suspension, and it does not make the first-generation front suspension “the same” as the 2021 design. A buyer comparing trail behavior, steering feel or replacement components should name the exact year and two- or four-door configuration.

Why the first generation feels different in use

Compact trail and work-site behavior

The short wheelbase, compact body and 33.6-foot turning diameter give the original a different spatial relationship with a trail or work site than a larger successor. You are driving a smaller vehicle around obstacles, not simply a scaled-down full-size truck. That can be an advantage where clearance between trees, rocks or buildings is limited.

Less built-in comfort and convenience

The original’s body choices prioritize open-air access and utility. The Roadster is fundamentally different from the enclosed Wagon, and the Sport Utility/half-cab emphasizes a pickup-style bed. Later Broncos were designed with more passenger comfort in mind; Ford specifically cites smoother ride and additional passenger room when describing the 1978 redesign. Do not assume that a first-generation Bronco provides the quiet, enclosed environment expected from a modern SUV.

Mechanical variation inside one generation

Early three-speed manual and six-cylinder examples, V8-equipped Broncos, and 1973-and-later vehicles with available power steering or automatic transmission can have very different driving and maintenance requirements. The generation name identifies the era and basic architecture, not a single engine, gearbox or equipment package.

First generation versus the 1978–1979 second generation

Comparison point First generation (1966–1977) Second generation (1978–1979)
Basic concept Compact, purpose-built 4×4 Larger redesign
Platform relationship Original Bronco architecture F-Series-based, according to Ford
Size and comfort goal Short-wheelbase maneuverability; compact utility Greater length and width for smoother ride and passenger comfort
Body choices Roadster, Sport Utility/half-cab and Wagon Not stated in the cited Ford history source
Powertrain details 1966 launch: standard 4×4, three-speed manual, 170-cubic-inch 105-hp six; later changes varied by year Not stated in the cited Ford history source

The table shows why a 1978 Bronco should not be used as a proxy for a 1966–1977 vehicle. The redesign changed the platform and proportions before later generations introduced still more modern engineering.

First generation versus the 2021 Bronco

Feature First-generation reference 2021 reference
Era 1966–1977, with equipment changes during the run 2021 model year
Front suspension Coil springs and radius arms highlighted by Ford Low-mass independent front suspension
Rear suspension Not specified in the cited first-generation summary Five-link solid rear axle with Panhard rod
Body strategy Roadster, Sport Utility/half-cab and Wagon; top and upper sides removable Two- and four-door technical specifications; the cited sheet does not provide a first-generation-style body comparison
Launch engine and transmission 170-cubic-inch, 105-hp six and three-speed manual at 1966 launch Not stated in the cited technical-sheet facts used here

The 2021 specification demonstrates a modern interpretation of the Bronco name rather than a direct continuation of every first-generation detail. It combines independent front suspension with a linked solid rear axle, while the original is defined by its compact body, removable upper structure and simpler launch driveline.

How to identify which differences matter for a specific Bronco

  1. Confirm the model year. Separate 1966–1972 vehicles from 1973–1977 examples because Ford records the 1973 engine, steering and transmission changes.
  2. Record the body configuration. Determine whether the vehicle is a Roadster, Sport Utility/half-cab or Wagon, and check whether the top and upper-side panels are present and correctly fitted.
  3. Verify the engine and transmission. A launch-specification six-cylinder/manual Bronco, a 289 V8 upgrade and a later 302 with Cruise-O-Matic are not interchangeable descriptions.
  4. Check the chassis architecture before ordering parts. First-generation coil-spring/radius-arm components are not a substitute for parts designed around the 2021 independent front suspension and five-link rear axle.
  5. Choose the comparison vehicle by year. If the alternative is a 1978–1979 Bronco, focus on the F-Series platform and larger dimensions. If it is a 2021 Bronco, focus on its specified suspension and two- or four-door configuration.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Treating 1966 and 1977 as identical. The first-generation label spans a dozen model years and includes the 1973 changes.
  • Calling every later Bronco “the same.” The 1978 redesign and the 2021 technical specification represent different generations with different engineering priorities.
  • Assuming every first-generation Bronco has the launch drivetrain. The 289 V8, later 200 six, 302 V8, power steering and automatic transmission availability all qualify that assumption.
  • Ignoring body style when discussing practicality. A Roadster, half-cab and Wagon offer different weather protection, seating and cargo arrangements.
  • Using modern suspension terminology as a universal shortcut. The 2021 independent-front/five-link-solid-rear description is specific to that model year’s technical specification.

Bottom line for buyers, restorers and history readers

The first-generation Bronco is distinctive because it starts with a compact, short-wheelbase, standard-4×4 package built around maneuverability and adaptable bodywork. Its removable top and upper sides, three distinct body configurations and simple launch powertrain make it feel more like a small purpose-built utility 4×4 than a later full-size SUV. Ford’s 1978 redesign changed that formula by adding size, passenger comfort and an F-Series-based platform. The 2021 Bronco then applied modern suspension engineering—independent up front and a five-link solid axle at the rear—while retaining the Bronco name. For an accurate comparison, always pair the first-generation vehicle with its exact year, body style, engine and transmission, and identify the newer model year being considered.
