What sets the VQ family apart?
Nissan’s development story centers on refining engine response and airflow over successive VQ generations. In its 2006 announcement of the VQ35HR, Nissan described redesigned core components, symmetric intake and exhaust arrangements, variable valve timing, reduced friction and changes intended to improve block rigidity. Nissan said the HR designation stood for “high revolution” and “high response.” These are the manufacturer’s stated design aims, not independent proof of a reliability advantage or a power record. Nissan’s 2006 VQ35HR announcement also set a 7,500-rpm engine-speed target and characterized it at the time as a top-in-class level for the new HR engines.
The VQ family also had substantial production scale: Nissan reported that cumulative VQ production reached 5.5 million engines by the end of fiscal 2005, or March 31, 2006. That is a historical figure, not a current production total. Nissan’s announcement is the source for both the production figure and the rpm target.
How much power did the VQ37VHR make?
Nissan’s archived V36 Skyline specification page lists the 3.7-liter VQ37VHR at 243 kW (330 PS) at 7,000 rpm and 361 N·m of torque at 5,200 rpm. On the same page, the VQ25HR is listed at 165 kW (225 PS) at 6,400 rpm and 258 N·m at 4,800 rpm. The VQ37VHR’s VVEL system—Variable Valve Event & Lift—varies intake-valve event and lift in response to accelerator input, according to Nissan. It is one of the technologies that distinguishes this later VQ example; the specification page’s power figures describe the engine’s output in the listed Skyline application, not a family-wide benchmark. What do the VQ’s awards and production claims show?
Nissan said in 2007 that the VQ35HR received a Ward’s 10 Best Engines award and that the VQ had appeared on the list for 13 consecutive years by then. Nissan described the award selection as the work of ten editors and writers from Ward’s automotive publications. Does the VQ deserve to be called one of Japan’s most powerful production engines?
The cited Nissan material supports a more specific conclusion: some VQ variants combined high-rpm design goals with substantial output, and the VQ37VHR made 243 kW (330 PS) in the V36 Skyline specification Nissan published. It does not compare the entire VQ family against every Japanese production engine, so it cannot substantiate a definitive “one of the most powerful” ranking. To assess a particular car, use its exact engine code, model and market specification rather than assuming that all VQ engines share the VQ37VHR’s output or features.
