The Mitsubishi Mirage ended after the 2024 model year, but its departure did not leave just one new car under $20,000 for good. The Nissan Versa briefly held that distinction in 2025; after its cheapest manual trim was dropped, its reported starting price rose to $21,130. By Cars.com’s March 2, 2026 snapshot, the Versa was gone and the lowest-priced new car was the 2026 Hyundai Venue at $22,150 including destination. Those are dated market rankings—not a guarantee of today’s local prices or inventory.
When did Mitsubishi stop selling the Mirage?
Mitsubishi discontinued both the Mirage hatchback and Mirage G4 sedan after the 2024 model year. The company’s U.S. Mirage page says production ended and there would be no 2025 models. In 2024, Mitsubishi North American spokesman Jeremy Barnes told Car and Driver, “Mirage is being discontinued in the U.S. market, and there will not be a 2025 model.” (Car and Driver)
Could a dealer still have a new Mirage?
Yes. Ending production does not instantly clear unsold cars from dealer lots. In 2024, Mitsubishi estimated that dealer stock might last into summer 2025, but that was a forecast, not a promise. Cars.com reported a limited number of listings in March 2026; availability can vary by location and change quickly. Check with the selling dealer to confirm that a specific car is still available and whether it is new, rather than relying on an old listing. (Cars.com)
Was the Mirage really the last new car under $20,000?
That description fits the shrinking U.S. market for part of the period around the Mirage’s departure, but it needs a date. The Mirage ended after 2024. During 2025, Nissan’s Versa remained the last new car with a starting price below $20,000 until Nissan dropped the entry-level S manual. MotorTrend reported that the manual had cost $18,330 and that the remaining S automatic started at $21,130. Those figures describe the reported 2025 trim change, not a current quote. (MotorTrend)

By March 2, 2026, Cars.com reported that the Versa was gone and named the 2026 Hyundai Venue as the least expensive new car, at $22,150 including destination. The ranking and price are specific to that report; model-year pricing, fees, and availability can change. (Cars.com)
How do the key prices compare?
| Vehicle or figure | Reported price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Mirage | $19,205 | Historical average sale price in July 2023, attributed by the Associated Press to Cox Automotive. It is not the Mirage’s final model-year MSRP or a current transaction price. (Associated Press) |
| Nissan Versa S manual | $18,330 | Price MotorTrend reported for the entry-level manual dropped for 2025; it is not the starting price after that trim was removed. (MotorTrend) |
| Nissan Versa S automatic | $21,130 | Reported 2025 starting price after the manual entry trim was dropped. (MotorTrend) |
| 2026 Hyundai Venue | $22,150 including destination | Cars.com’s reported lowest new-car price as of March 2, 2026. (Cars.com) |
The Mirage’s historical average sale price and the Venue’s reported base price are different kinds of figures from different years. They should not be read as a direct price comparison. Neither tells you a particular car’s out-the-door cost, which can depend on taxes, fees, dealer charges, equipment, and local availability.

What did buyers give up when the Mirage left?
The Mirage’s appeal was its position as a basic, inexpensive new car. Cars.com describes it as slow, noisy, and cramped, while listing maximum EPA-rated fuel economy of 36 mpg city, 43 highway, and 39 combined. Those are maximum ratings reported by Cars.com, not a guarantee for every trim or transmission; check the EPA listing for the specific version. (Cars.com; EPA FuelEconomy.gov)
With the Mirage gone, a shopper comparing the least expensive new cars should look beyond the advertised starting price. Compare the actual out-the-door quote, body style and interior or cargo space, fuel economy, standard safety and convenience equipment, warranty, and whether a dealer has the vehicle in stock. The available figures here do not establish a like-for-like trim comparison across the Venue and other low-priced models.

What should a shopper do now?
- If you want a new Mirage: Search local dealer listings, then call to confirm the vehicle’s status, model year, trim, price, and availability. Remaining new inventory is not assured.
- If you are considering the 2026 price leader: Use $22,150 including destination as Cars.com’s March 2, 2026 reported Venue figure, then obtain a current written quote from a dealer. It is not an out-the-door price.
- If your budget is strictly below $20,000: Do not assume a new-car listing from 2025 is still available or priced the same. Check current local new inventory and compare it with used cars, using the condition, mileage, history, and total cost of each vehicle in your decision.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
