Buyers compare each aging model with the supply available locally, expected service and repair costs, fuel economy, reliability, mileage, condition and current demand. Those factors vary sharply by model and by year, so there is no single “luxury depreciation rate.”
U.S. market studies show why broad assumptions fail. iSeeCars measured average five-year depreciation of 41.8% for vehicles sold from March 2025 through February 2026, versus 45.6% in its 2025 study. In its large-luxury-car category, five-year retained value averaged 47.5%, while individual models ranged from the high 50s to 60%. These are cohort estimates, not guaranteed trade-in or private-party prices for your car.

How a luxury sedan’s resale value is actually set
A new luxury sedan is priced for its original buyer: the vehicle may carry a premium badge, costly materials, powerful engines, advanced equipment and a wide range of options. Five years later, a different buyer is deciding whether that same car is worth owning as a used vehicle. The second buyer is not paying for the original positioning; they are pricing the car against other used cars they can buy now.
Kelley Blue Book says resale value reflects “supply and demand, as well as current and projected future market conditions.” In its 2025 Best Resale Value announcement, KBB added that vehicles retaining value best are typically discounted the least and generate high consumer interest. A luxury sedan therefore falls quickly when the used market has limited interest in its exact model, trim or powertrain, even if the car was expensive and desirable when new.

Original MSRP is not a promise of future value
Depreciation studies generally compare a new vehicle’s MSRP with the price of an equivalent vehicle after a set period. iSeeCars defines resale value as the difference between new MSRP and the price of an equivalent five-year-old used vehicle, with inflation adjustments based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. That methodology is useful for comparing groups, but it is not a quote for an individual listing.
Market timing changes the result
Used-car supply and demand move from one year to the next. iSeeCars’ change from 45.6% average five-year depreciation in its 2025 study to 41.8% in the 2026 study demonstrates that the same five-year framework can produce different results as market conditions change. A retained-value estimate is therefore tied to its study period and should not be treated as a permanent annual rule.

The main reasons used luxury sedans lose value quickly
1. Used buyers may not value the original luxury premium
Luxury pricing is easiest to justify when a car is new and backed by the latest specification, warranty and showroom experience. Once the car is older, a shopper may compare it with newer mainstream sedans or less expensive luxury rivals that offer similar space and equipment. If the used market does not show strong consumer interest in the exact car, sellers must price it competitively. The badge alone cannot preserve the original premium.

2. Demand is model-specific, not brand-wide
Retention varies among individual models, body styles and powertrains. iSeeCars’ 2026 large-luxury-car figures illustrate the spread: the category averaged 47.5% retained value after five years, while the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe was listed at 60%, the Lexus LS 500 at 59.7% and the Porsche Panamera at 58.9%. These examples are study estimates for the listed vehicles; they do not establish a universal rate for every sedan from those manufacturers. The S-Class example is also a coupe, so it should not be read as a direct sedan-versus-sedan comparison.

A model with a broad pool of interested used buyers can retain more value than a technically similar car with a narrower audience. Body style and powertrain influence which shoppers consider the vehicle, while changing market preferences can alter that audience during the ownership cycle.
3. Expected service costs reduce what buyers are willing to pay
Used shoppers evaluate the complete ownership proposition, not just the purchase price. iSeeCars notes that high-horsepower vehicles can cost more to buy and service and may deliver poor fuel economy. Those characteristics can narrow the audience for an older performance-oriented sedan. Reliability is also model-specific: iSeeCars’ used-luxury rankings treat reliability and safety as separate considerations alongside value retention.

This does not prove that an expensive repair causes a specific percentage loss in resale value. It means a buyer may discount a car when its likely running costs, fuel consumption or reliability record compare unfavorably with alternatives. The relevant question is how the exact model is perceived, not whether every luxury sedan has the same repair profile.

4. Mileage and condition change the individual result
Five-year studies describe averages for vehicles in a defined sales sample. Your sedan may have substantially more or fewer miles, cosmetic damage, missing service records or a remaining warranty. CarEdge’s depreciation calculator includes annual mileage as an input, confirming that mileage belongs in a vehicle-specific estimate. The available evidence does not establish a universal dollar adjustment for every additional mile, maintenance record or warranty status, so those items should be checked rather than assigned a generic percentage.

5. The used market can reprice a whole segment
A change in financing conditions, fuel prices, supply or buyer preferences can move prices for many vehicles at once. iSeeCars’ 2026 study reported 57.2% five-year depreciation for electric vehicles, a broad segment comparison rather than a luxury-sedan statistic. The figure is useful as evidence that powertrain groups can experience different market outcomes, but it cannot be applied to a particular gasoline or electric luxury sedan without matching the model, period and methodology.

Because iSeeCars and KBB use different datasets, dates and methods, their percentages should not be merged into one precise forecast. A five-year retained-value estimate also is not the same as a dealer trade-in offer, a private-party price or total cost of ownership.
How to compare two actual used luxury sedans
If you are deciding between two cars, use the same horizon and the same evidence for both. A badge-only comparison can hide large differences in mileage, equipment, market supply and ownership risk.
- Record the exact specification. Write down make, model, model year, trim, body style and powertrain. “Luxury sedan” is too broad for a meaningful valuation comparison.
- Match the valuation basis. Compare five-year estimates with five-year estimates, and identify whether the source uses MSRP-to-used-price retention, an advertised price or another metric. Do not compare a forecast with a completed-sale average as if they were identical.
- Enter vehicle-specific mileage. Use a calculator that accepts annual or current mileage, such as the input described by CarEdge. Treat the output as an estimate, not an offer.
- Document condition and history. Check accident history, tire and brake wear, cosmetic condition, service invoices, number of owners and remaining warranty. The available studies do not provide a universal adjustment for each item, so use them to explain differences between the two cars rather than applying an invented formula.
- Check model-level retention. Use a published ranking for the same model and time horizon. Keep category averages separate from the exact vehicle; the iSeeCars large-luxury examples show how widely model estimates can differ.
- Evaluate ownership costs separately. Compare reliability information, safety, expected service expense and fuel economy. A vehicle can retain value reasonably well yet still be costly to operate, or lose value quickly without having the highest repair bills.
- Check current local supply and demand. Count comparable listings in your area, note how long they remain advertised and compare prices for similar mileage and condition. KBB identifies current and projected market conditions as resale drivers, so a national estimate may not match a local selling environment.
- Use the result as a range, not a promise. Leave room for negotiation, taxes, fees and the difference between an asking price and a completed sale. A calculator or ranking cannot guarantee what a dealer or private buyer will pay.
Common mistakes when judging luxury-sedan depreciation
- Converting a five-year figure into an annual rate. Depreciation is not necessarily linear; the published percentage covers a five-year comparison, not five equal yearly drops.
- Assuming every luxury sedan depreciates faster than every mainstream car. The available studies show variation by segment and model, not a universal brand-or-category penalty.
- Treating retained value as cash in hand. A percentage describes a comparison under a stated method. It does not account for your exact mileage, condition, location, transaction type or negotiation.
- Blaming repairs alone. Service cost and reliability are relevant ownership considerations, but the cited evidence does not quantify a standalone resale deduction caused by repairs.
- Using a brand average for a specific car. A manufacturer can sell models with very different demand, powertrains and reliability records. Compare the exact model and body style.
- Ignoring the study date. iSeeCars’ 2025 and 2026 averages differ. Always state the measurement period before using a percentage to make a buying decision.
When a fast drop can create a worthwhile used-car opportunity
Rapid depreciation is not automatically a reason to avoid a luxury sedan. It can lower the entry price for a buyer who has verified the car’s condition and budgeted for ownership. The trade-off is that the same market forces that make the purchase inexpensive can make resale harder later. A sensible decision weighs the discounted purchase price against reliability, fuel economy, service needs, mileage, local demand and how long you intend to keep the car.
The strongest comparison is therefore not “Which luxury badge depreciates least?” It is “Which exact sedan offers acceptable retained value and ownership risk at today’s local price?” Published estimates help establish context; the vehicle’s specification and condition determine where it sits within that context.
