A Porsche 993 restomod can outrun some modern supercars by combining supercar-level power with a much lower mass and a thoroughly re-engineered chassis. The strongest example in Gunther Werks’ published specifications is its 993-based Turbo program: the builder lists 850 hp, a 2,700-pound curb weight and a 3.18 lb-per-horsepower ratio. Those are builder specifications, not independently verified performance results, and they do not prove that the car beats every modern supercar. “Faster” depends on whether you mean acceleration, top speed, braking, cornering or lap time.
The decisive point is that a serious restomod is not a lightly modified 1990s Porsche. It keeps the 993’s structure and character while replacing or redesigning the engine, cooling system, suspension, brakes, wheels, bodywork and aerodynamic surfaces.

First, define which 993 restomod you mean
“993 restomod” describes a category, not one standardized vehicle. A car with a rebuilt naturally aspirated engine, modern tires and refreshed suspension is fundamentally different from a carbon-bodied, twin-turbo conversion. Published figures from one builder cannot be applied to every 993 project.
Gunther Werks says its Turbo program uses the 993—the final air-cooled generation—as the foundation for its vision. The program specifies a Rothsport Racing-built 4.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six, a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. It lists 600 hp in standard form and up to 850 hp in track mode, along with a 2,700-pound curb weight.

For context, RUF Automobile UK describes its Turbo R as a separate 993 Turbo-based conversion. Its page claims 550 bhp, 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a 206 mph top speed. Those figures belong to the RUF Turbo R, not the Gunther Werks Turbo.
The distinction matters because engine output, gearing, weight, aero setup and intended use can vary dramatically between conversions. There is no single “993 restomod” performance number.
Power-to-weight is the foundation of the speed advantage
850 hp in a 2,700-pound car
Gunther Werks’ headline specification is 850 hp at a listed 2,700-pound curb weight. The builder gives a 3.18 lb-per-horsepower power-to-weight figure. In standard form, the same program is described as producing 600 hp; the 850-hp figure is associated with track mode.
Power-to-weight is more informative than horsepower alone because it indicates how much mass each unit of engine output must accelerate. A heavy modern car can have extraordinary power yet carry substantially more mass than a lightweight 993 conversion. Reducing the load also helps braking, direction changes and tire work, not just straight-line acceleration.
These numbers should be read as program specifications. Gunther Werks’ published specifications do not provide an independent dyno sheet, instrumented acceleration test or verified top-speed run for the Gunther Werks Turbo. It is therefore accurate to say that the stated ratio gives the car the potential for supercar-level acceleration, but not that a measured 850-hp car has definitively beaten a particular supercar.
Why the engine specification is more than a larger displacement figure
The Turbo program’s 4.0-liter flat-six uses two turbochargers. Turbocharging increases the mass of air the engine can process, allowing substantially more fuel to be burned and more torque to be produced than a stock naturally aspirated 993 engine. The six-speed manual lets the driver keep the engine in its useful rev range, although a manual transmission does not automatically produce quicker launches than an automated gearbox.
Rear-wheel drive keeps the conversion’s traditional layout and affects how the available torque reaches the road. Launch technique, tire condition, surface grip and gear selection will determine how much of the stated output becomes forward motion.

Lower mass makes every performance system work harder
Carbon fiber changes more than the body panels
Gunther Werks lists carbon-fiber bodywork and describes carbon-fiber seats and rear-seat-delete elements. At 2,700 pounds, the stated curb weight is a central part of the performance case. Removing mass reduces the inertia that the engine must overcome and lowers the energy the brakes must dissipate.
Weight reduction also improves transient response. A lighter car can change direction with less force, and its suspension does not need to control as much load during braking, acceleration or cornering. The benefit is cumulative: lighter body panels, seats and wheels can improve the car’s response even when the peak horsepower figure stays unchanged.
The 2,700-pound figure is not a universal restomod target. Equipment, fuel load, interior trim, emissions hardware and track options can change the actual weight of an individual car. Treat it as the builder’s stated curb weight for the specified program.
Cooling and turbo response prevent power from becoming heat
Charge cooling supports repeatable output
Gunther Werks describes a race-derived flat fan and twin liquid charge coolers. The flat fan is intended to move cooling air through the engine system, while liquid charge cooling lowers the temperature of the compressed intake air before it enters the cylinders. Cooler charge air is denser, which helps an engine maintain power when it is being worked hard.

The builder also describes a short intake route intended to reduce turbo lag. Turbo lag is the delay between opening the throttle and receiving the expected boost response. Shortening the path between the compressor, charge cooler and engine can reduce the volume that must be pressurized, but the actual response still depends on turbocharger sizing, calibration, gearing and engine speed.
Cooling and response are especially important on a track. A single acceleration run can show peak output; repeated laps reveal whether temperatures force the engine to reduce power. The published specifications describe the hardware and its intended function, not an independent endurance test.
The chassis converts horsepower into usable speed
Active suspension and revised geometry
The Turbo program specifies computer-controlled active coil-over suspension, revised suspension arms and geometry, and upgraded anti-roll bars. These changes can keep the tires better aligned with the road as the body heaves, rolls and pitches. Better control of camber, toe and body movement helps maintain a consistent contact patch during braking and cornering.

- IDEAL REMOTE CONTROL PORSCHE CAR :The remote control porsche car works well on a smooth surface, suitable to play inside and outside. You not only play with it using the remote control but also place it as an exhibit on a display shelf. It is a good choice for you at various festivals
Active control does not make a car universally faster. A setting that works on a smooth circuit may be too stiff for a rough road, and the best result depends on tire choice, alignment and driver inputs. The important change is the range of control available compared with a stock 1990s suspension.
Wheels and tires are the final link
Gunther Werks lists forged magnesium and carbon-fiber wheels. Lower wheel mass reduces unsprung and rotational weight, allowing the suspension to follow surface changes more closely and reducing the energy required to accelerate the wheels. Gunther Werks’ published specifications do not provide tire size, compound or independent grip measurements, so no specific cornering or braking improvement can be quantified from the published figures.
Brakes and aerodynamics determine how quickly speed can be used
Stopping hardware closes the performance loop
The program includes large Brembo brakes and braided brake lines. Larger brakes can absorb more heat, while braided lines can provide a firmer pedal by reducing hose expansion. Brake performance still depends on pad compound, cooling, tire grip, brake balance and driver technique. Horsepower without sufficient stopping capacity would make the car fast only in short bursts.
Downforce can improve corner entry and exit
Gunther Werks says its carbon-fiber body and airflow work serve weight reduction, cooling and downforce. Downforce can increase tire load at speed without adding static mass, improving cornering and braking potential. It also creates drag, so the aerodynamic balance must match the intended speed and track.
The builder’s description establishes design intent, not a measured aerodynamic coefficient or lap-time gain. Without wind-tunnel data or an instrumented comparison, it is not possible to state how much additional downforce the conversion produces or how that figure compares with a modern supercar.

What the published numbers actually show
The following comparison keeps each figure attached to its source and configuration. It is not a controlled head-to-head test: the vehicles are different, the test methods differ and the Gunther Werks Turbo has no sourced acceleration or top-speed result in Gunther Werks’ published specifications.
| Vehicle or build | Published figure | Evidence and configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Gunther Werks Turbo, 993-based | 850 hp; 2,700 lb curb weight; 3.18 lb/hp | Gunther Werks builder specifications. The 850-hp figure is for track mode; no sourced 0–60 mph or top-speed result. |
| RUF Turbo R, 993 Turbo conversion | 550 bhp; 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds; 206 mph top speed | RUF Automobile UK conversion-page claims. These figures are for the Turbo R, not the Gunther Werks Turbo. |
| Porsche 911 Turbo S, 2027 US listing | 0–60 mph in 2.4 seconds with Sport Chrono; 200 mph top speed | Porsche manufacturer comparison listing. The acceleration figure is configuration-specific and manufacturer-published. |
| Earlier naturally aspirated Gunther Werks 993 prototype | 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds | Car and Driver independent instrumented road test from 2019. It is a different, naturally aspirated prototype, not the Turbo program. |
The table explains why a simple headline such as “the restomod is faster” can mislead. The RUF Turbo R’s claimed 206-mph top speed is higher than the 2027 911 Turbo S listing’s 200 mph, while the Porsche’s listed 2.4-second 0–60 time is quicker than the RUF claim of 3.6 seconds. Those are different metrics and different evidence types, not proof that one car dominates the other in every situation.

How the 993 compares with its historical starting point
A stock 993 should not be confused with a modern conversion. Porsche’s historical material identifies the 993 as the final air-cooled generation and lists 331 kW, or 450 PS, for the 1998 911 Turbo S. Porsche also documented a power-pack upgrade for the regular 911 Turbo.
That historical output is far below the 850-hp figure claimed for the Gunther Werks Turbo. The difference comes from the conversion’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter engine, modern engine management, charge cooling and supporting systems—not from the 993 chassis alone. Calling the result “a faster 993” is shorthand for a new performance system built around a 993 foundation.
Why a restomod can still lose a straight-line contest
Published horsepower is not launch performance
Acceleration from rest depends on traction, weight transfer, gearing, clutch control and the driver’s ability to manage wheelspin. A rear-wheel-drive manual car can have a favorable power-to-weight ratio yet launch less consistently than a modern car with a highly automated launch strategy. Published sources do not provide comparable launch tests for the Gunther Werks Turbo and a modern supercar.
Top speed requires more than power
At high speed, aerodynamic drag rises sharply. Cooling openings, downforce devices, tire ratings, gearing and engine operating range all influence the maximum speed. The Gunther Werks page does not publish a top-speed figure, so its 850 hp cannot be converted into a defensible top-speed claim.
Track speed is a system result
Lap time combines acceleration, braking, cornering, thermal management and driver confidence. Active suspension, large brakes, light wheels and aerodynamic work may make the Turbo program exceptionally capable, but no controlled lap-time comparison with a modern supercar is supplied. Any claim that it beats all modern supercars would go beyond the evidence.
How to evaluate a 993 restomod performance claim
- Identify the exact build. Record the builder, engine version, power mode, transmission, drive layout, curb-weight definition and aerodynamic configuration.
- Match the metric. Compare 0–60 mph with 0–60 mph, top speed with top speed and independent tests with independent tests. Do not substitute a power-to-weight ratio for an acceleration result.
- Check the test conditions. Note tire type, surface, weather, fuel load, launch-control use, driver and whether the number is a manufacturer claim or an instrumented test.
- Separate intent from measurement. A builder can explain that a short intake reduces lag or that bodywork creates downforce; only testing establishes the size of the effect.
- Look for repeatability. Ask whether the car can deliver its output after repeated runs or laps, not just for one headline pass.
The defensible answer
A Porsche 993 restomod can be faster than a modern supercar in a particular discipline because it may combine 850 hp with a 2,700-pound body, modern suspension control, high-capacity brakes, lightweight wheels, improved cooling and purposeful aerodynamic work. That combination gives the car a remarkable theoretical and engineering advantage over a stock 993.

The Gunther Werks figures are builder specifications; the RUF Turbo R numbers are separate builder claims; Porsche’s 911 Turbo S figures are manufacturer-listed; and the only independent Gunther Werks acceleration result cited here belongs to an earlier naturally aspirated prototype. The honest conclusion is conditional: a well-engineered 993 conversion can be supercar-fast, and may be quicker in a chosen metric, but the specific comparison requires a controlled test of the exact cars involved.
