A large EPA range figure helps, but it does not prove comfort: seat shape, wheel-and-tire choice, road surface, weather, charging access and route-planning software all affect the experience.
The reliable way to choose is to compare the exact trim and wheel configuration, sit in every row you will use, drive on representative broken pavement and highway joints, and plan a familiar route in the vehicle’s own charging system before buying.

What long-trip comfort actually includes
Comfort is a system rather than a single feature. A massaging seat cannot compensate for a cushion that is too short, and a 450-mile estimate cannot remove the stress of an unreliable charging stop. Evaluate these areas together:
- Seat fit: lumbar position, thigh support, cushion length, posture and adjustment range for each regular driver.
- Ride control: how the suspension handles potholes, expansion joints, patched asphalt and undulating highways.
- Fatigue factors: cabin noise, vibration, steering effort and the ability to maintain a relaxed posture over several hours.
- Passenger conditions: legroom, headroom, entry and exit, ventilation and climate controls in every occupied row.
- Practical space: usable luggage room with the intended number of seats in use, not just the maximum cargo volume with rows folded.
- Energy logistics: real range for the exact configuration, DC charging speed, compatible stations and route planning that schedules sensible stops.
No published statistic establishes a universally most-comfortable luxury electric SUV. Manufacturer pages identify equipment, while independent evidence in this comparison does not provide like-for-like comfort scores for the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and Lucid Gravity. Start with seat fit, not the feature list
Check the geometry
Spend enough time in the driver’s seat to set your normal posture, then check whether the controls still fall naturally to hand. The cushion should support most of your thigh without pressing behind the knee; the lumbar contour should contact your lower back rather than your belt line; and the steering wheel should pull toward you so you are not reaching with straight arms. Verify that the seat can move low enough for your preferred hip-to-knee angle and high enough for clear visibility.
Repeat the exercise in the front passenger seat and in every row you expect adults to occupy. A third row that works for children may be unsuitable for an adult after an hour, and a large second-row console can limit the position needed to stretch a leg.
Separate fit from powered features
Heating, ventilation and massage are comfort aids, not proof that a seat fits. Mercedes-Benz USA describes heated power front seats in the EQS SUV with “energizing kinetics,” which make minute adjustments while driving. Its product page identifies ventilation and massage as standard on the EQS 500 and as options on the EQS 400, so equipment depends on the version you select: Mercedes-Benz USA EQS Luxury Electric SUV.

Why the same SUV can feel different
Air springs, adaptive dampers and automatic leveling can keep a heavy electric SUV composed, but wheel diameter and tire sidewall also change the impact you feel. A large wheel with a short sidewall may look appropriate on a luxury vehicle while transmitting sharper edges over potholes. Compare the exact wheel-and-tire package you would purchase, not a better-equipped demonstrator on a different specification.

Mercedes-Benz says the EQS SUV has standard multimode AIRMATIC air suspension with adaptive damping and automatic level control. Lucid describes Gravity as having adjustable air suspension and a smooth ride. Those are manufacturer descriptions of hardware and intent, not an independent head-to-head comfort result: EQS suspension information and Gravity features.
Use a representative road loop
- Drive over a rough residential street with patched pavement and utility covers.
- Cross several highway expansion joints at normal speed.
- Use a smooth motorway section to detect pitch, float or steering corrections.
- Take a passenger in the second row and ask what impacts or vertical motion they feel.
- Repeat the loop in the suspension modes you would actually use; do not judge only the most compliant setting if it creates excess body motion.
Note whether the vehicle settles after a single bump or continues to heave. Also check how much tire and suspension noise reaches the cabin. The available material contains no comparable decibel or fatigue measurements, so a sustained drive is necessary.
Keep every occupied row comfortable
Climate by row
Front-seat comfort does not help a passenger who is cold in the third row. Check whether rear occupants have their own vents, temperature controls, seat heating and usable airflow, and whether those controls remain accessible when child seats or luggage are installed. Lucid advertises four customizable climate zones and seating for up to seven in Gravity; confirm which trim and seat configuration includes each feature: Lucid Gravity product page.
Entry, exit and posture
Have every regular passenger enter without assistance. Inspect step-in height, door opening, seat-belt reach and the space needed to rotate out of the third row. Sit for at least 20 minutes in each row with the front seats set for the tallest expected occupant. Look for a footwell that allows a natural ankle angle and a seat base that supports the thighs rather than forcing knees upward.
Luggage with all seats in use
Bring the bags you normally carry: a stroller, soft cases, a cooler or charging cables. Load them behind the third row, then behind the second row, and check whether the cargo cover closes. Range and charging are part of comfort
Read range figures with their conditions
Lucid’s current Gravity page lists an EPA-estimated range of up to 450 miles for the Grand Touring with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels in a two-row, five-seat configuration. It lists 337 miles for Touring under the same stated configuration. Lucid says results vary with temperature, driving habits, charging and battery condition: Lucid Gravity range specifications. These are trim- and configuration-specific estimates, not a promise that every Gravity or every journey will achieve those numbers.
Wheel choice, cold weather, high speeds, headwinds, elevation and a full passenger load can reduce the distance available between stops. Leave a reserve that matches the route’s station density and your tolerance for detours rather than planning to arrive at zero.
Understand charging speed in context
Lucid states that a Gravity Grand Touring with the specified wheels can add up to 200 miles in under 11 minutes on a 400-kilowatt DC fast charger, while noting that rates vary with equipment and charging conditions: Lucid Gravity charging information. The vehicle, charger, battery temperature and state of charge all influence the actual session. A headline charging rate is useful only where a compatible high-power station exists and is functioning.
Use an independent result correctly
In Edmunds’ independent EV Range Test, as reported by AP News, a 2025 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+ SUV traveled 407 miles. The report gives that model an EPA-estimated range of 323 miles. That result belongs to the tested vehicle, route and conditions; it should not be projected to another EQS trim, model year, route or driver: AP News report of the Edmunds EV Range Test.
Route planning can prevent charging friction
Navigation quality affects how relaxed a long trip feels. Mercedes says its MBUX Electric Intelligence system plans using traffic, topography and charging options: Mercedes-Benz EQS route-planning information. Before purchase, enter a route you know and inspect the proposed stops, estimated arrival state of charge and alternatives. Check whether the system can precondition the battery for a fast charger and whether it recognizes stations on your preferred network.

- Run it through the vehicle’s built-in navigation, not only a phone app.
- Review each stop’s location, amenities, opening hours and backup options.
- Check the predicted arrival charge with a full passenger load and cold-weather assumption where relevant.
- Identify a second station before a remote stretch so a single outage does not force a major detour.
- On the actual trip, follow live traffic and charger availability rather than treating the original plan as fixed.
At home, an optional connected charging station can replenish a compatible vehicle overnight, which may simplify departure preparation. Lucid describes its Connected Home Charging Station as an optional accessory; installation, compatibility and pricing must be verified for your location: Lucid charging accessories. Home charging is an ownership convenience, not a substitute for evaluating public charging on long journeys.

Lucid senior product executive Eric Bach said at the April 15, 2025 launch that Gravity combines “comfort and space, ride and handling, practicality and range” and offers charging convenience. That is Lucid’s promotional characterization, not an independent finding: Lucid launch release.
A practical test-drive checklist
Book enough time to evaluate the vehicle as a travel tool, not a showroom object. Bring the people and luggage that define your use.
- Before driving: record the exact trim, battery, wheel and tire specification; photograph the window sticker; set the seat from scratch instead of accepting the salesperson’s position.
- Seat test: adjust cushion length, height, rake, lumbar and steering reach; drive with massage and ventilation off, then test each setting.
- Road test: include broken pavement, highway joints, a smooth high-speed section and a tight parking maneuver.
- Passenger test: put an adult in every row, operate rear climate controls and check visibility, belt fit and ease of exit.
- Space test: load your real bags with all intended seats upright and confirm charging cables have a protected location.
- Interface test: ask the navigation system to plan a route with a charging stop and inspect arrival-charge assumptions and alternatives.
- After the drive: write down pressure points, noise, motion sickness, temperature differences and any control you could not find quickly.
Pitfalls that create an uncomfortable trip
Buying by EPA range alone
Range is an energy estimate, not a measure of seat support, ride isolation or charger reliability. Compare the exact trim and conditions, then test the route that matters to you.

Assuming a premium feature guarantees comfort
Massage, air suspension and four-zone climate can improve a well-fitting vehicle, but they cannot correct poor geometry, an over-large wheel or inadequate third-row space.

Testing only a smooth urban loop
A quiet dealership route hides the impacts and fatigue you may encounter on patched roads and highway joints. Insist on representative surfaces and a passenger evaluation.
Planning the optimistic charging case
Maximum charging rates require the right charger and conditions. Build a reserve, verify station availability and keep a backup stop for remote sections.
Ignoring configuration changes
Two-row and three-row layouts, wheel sizes and optional seat or climate packages can alter both comfort and range. Keep the specification sheet for the vehicle you actually order.

The most comfortable luxury electric SUV for a long trip is the one whose seat fits every regular occupant, filters your roads without excessive motion, keeps each row at a tolerable temperature, carries your luggage in the intended seating layout and turns charging into a predictable part of the itinerary. Current examples demonstrate useful equipment and impressive model-specific figures, but the available evidence does not establish a single winner. Compare exact configurations, drive your real roads and validate a real charging plan before deciding.
