Ford’s retrospective timeline lists 355 horsepower for the 1967 GT500. A small number of 1967 cars are associated with 427 engines, but those are exceptions rather than the normal GT500 specification.
The short answer: a Mustang transformed for Shelby performance
The standard Mustang was Ford’s broad model line, offered with several engine choices and body styles. Shelby took the enlarged 1967 Mustang and developed a more specialized performance version around a big-block V-8. That work changed the car’s powertrain, appearance and positioning without turning it into an entirely unrelated automobile.

Shelby American’s official history explains that Ford enlarged the Mustang enough to accept a big-block V-8, allowing the Shelby GT500 to join the range in 1967. The defining production engine was a 428-cubic-inch V-8. Ford Motor Company’s “50 Years of Mustang Milestones” timeline, dated December 5, 2013, describes the 1967 GT500 as having a “hefty 428-cid V-8 that produces 355 horsepower.” That is a retrospective Ford rating, not the result of a newly conducted 1967 dynamometer test.

How the GT500 compares with a standard Mustang
| Comparison point | Standard Mustang | 1967 Shelby GT500 | What can safely be said about 1968 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity | Ford Mustang passenger-car model line with multiple configurations | Shelby-developed high-performance Mustang variant | The title covers a second model year, but the cited material does not establish a complete 1968 trim breakdown |
| Engine | Several Mustang engine choices were available; the cited sources do not itemize them here | 428-cubic-inch big-block V-8 as the defining standard engine | Do not assume every 1968 detail from the 1967 launch specification without checking the individual car |
| Published power figure | Not stated in the cited material | 355 horsepower, according to Ford’s 2013 retrospective timeline | A universal 1968 rating is not established by the cited material |
| Body treatment | Ford Mustang bodywork | Shelby-specific styling, including a custom fiberglass front treatment | Year-specific appearance and equipment should be verified rather than generalized |
| Platform relationship | Mustang | Mustang-based, with Shelby development and modifications | The same basic distinction applies, but exact equipment can vary by year and car |

The 428 V-8 is the mechanical headline
Why the engine mattered
The GT500’s 428-cubic-inch big-block was the clearest mechanical separation from an ordinary Mustang. Shelby American identifies the GT500’s engine family as a 428, while Ford’s timeline gives the 1967 car a published output of 355 horsepower. In period terms, this was not simply a cosmetic package or a trim badge: the Shelby was built around a substantially larger-displacement V-8 intended to deliver the authority associated with a high-performance big-block car.
It is important to keep the wording precise. “355 horsepower” is Ford Motor Company’s figure in a timeline published in 2013. It should be attributed to that source and year rather than presented as a contemporaneous independent test result. Horsepower figures from the 1960s can also be described differently depending on rating conventions and test conditions, so the Ford figure should not be converted into a modern performance claim without additional evidence.
Why “standard Mustang” is an incomplete comparison
There was no single mechanical specification shared by every standard Mustang. Ford sold the Mustang with a range of engines and equipment levels. The useful comparison is therefore not “GT500 versus one universal Mustang engine,” but “GT500’s 428 big-block versus the ordinary Mustang configurations available to a buyer who did not purchase the Shelby-developed model.” The GT500’s distinction lies in its focused, high-output configuration rather than in a minor engine option alone.

Fiberglass treatment, not a wholly separate body
The Shelby received a custom fiberglass front treatment and other Shelby-specific visual work. That made the nose and overall presentation visibly different from a standard Mustang. The distinction matters for restoration and identification: a GT500 should not be described as an unrelated chassis, but neither should its bodywork be dismissed as a decal package.
Ford’s timeline also notes that the 1967 Mustang itself was redesigned, with a sweeping full fastback roofline among the model’s notable forms. A Shelby GT500 built from that Mustang inherited the underlying Mustang architecture while adding Shelby-developed exterior treatment. In other words, the car was both things at once: a Mustang at its foundation and a Shelby in its engineering and presentation.

What the visual difference does—and does not—prove
Fiberglass and Shelby styling can help distinguish a car in photographs, at a show or during an inspection, but appearance alone does not establish authenticity. Components may have been replaced, repaired or reproduced over the decades. A claimed GT500 should be assessed through its documented history, identification information and drivetrain evidence, not only by whether its front end looks correct.
1967 and 1968 should not be treated as identical
The GT500 joined the Shelby range in 1967, which is the year most clearly covered by the authoritative material cited here. The central 1967 facts are secure: Shelby development, a standard 428-cubic-inch big-block V-8, Ford’s 355-horsepower retrospective rating and Shelby-specific fiberglass body treatment.

The title includes 1968, but the available sources do not provide a complete, authoritative breakdown of every 1968 trim detail, appearance change or midyear engine specification. That limitation changes how a careful answer should be written. It is reasonable to explain the GT500’s identity through the 1967 launch specification and Shelby’s Mustang-based approach; it is not reasonable to claim, without a year-specific source, that every 1968 car had exactly the same equipment, engine calibration or appearance.
For a particular 1968 car, use the model year shown by its documentation and inspect that vehicle’s original equipment, body panels, engine markings and ownership history. A general description of the GT500 family is useful for orientation, but it cannot substitute for a car-specific authentication review.
The 427-equipped 1967 cars are important exceptions
The 428 is the normal defining GT500 engine. Shelby Research Group’s specialist history documents a small number of 1967 GT500s associated with 427 engines. These cars are significant precisely because they are unusual; they should not be used to rewrite the standard specification.

When discussing one of these cars, separate three statements that are often blurred together:
Recommended Free Tools
- The regular 1967 GT500 identity is tied to the 428 big-block V-8.
- A limited group of 1967 cars is documented with 427 engines or exceptional engine histories.
- The presence of a 427 does not mean every GT500 left the factory with one.
Because rare cars attract replication and disputed histories, a 427 claim deserves especially strong documentation. Engine casting information, period records and a coherent chain of ownership are more persuasive than a replacement engine’s appearance or a seller’s description.
What the contemporary road test tells you
Car and Driver’s February 1967 “Road Test ’67 G.T. 500” is useful because it captures period impressions and discusses the equipment of the vehicle tested. It provides historical texture that an official timeline cannot: how a contemporary magazine framed the car, what it noticed and which equipment was present on that particular test vehicle.
That evidence must be read narrowly. A road test describes the car the magazine received, including its particular equipment and condition. It does not prove that every production GT500 had every option, setting or behavior noted in the article. Use the road test to understand period context, not as a universal build sheet or a substitute for factory records.
How to tell a Shelby GT500 from an ordinary Mustang
Start with the claimed year
Confirm whether the car is being represented as a 1967 or 1968 model. The year determines which appearance and equipment references are relevant. Be cautious when a description blends 1967 launch facts with unverified 1968 claims.

Check the powertrain claim
A 1967 GT500’s defining standard engine should be discussed as a 428-cubic-inch big-block V-8. If the car has a 427, treat that as an exceptional history requiring documentation, not as proof that the car is more typical of the model.
Inspect the Shelby-specific bodywork
Look for the custom fiberglass front treatment and the broader Shelby visual identity, while remembering that old fiberglass can be repaired or replaced. A correct-looking front end is evidence to investigate, not conclusive authentication.
Separate original equipment from later work
Classic cars often contain replacement engines, repaired panels and reproduction parts. Record what is currently installed, then determine what the car was built with. This distinction is essential when comparing a surviving vehicle with the historical GT500 specification.
Match claims to evidence
Use period documents, specialist records and a continuous ownership trail where available. Official Shelby and Ford histories establish the model’s broad identity; specialist references can illuminate rare 427 examples; a period road test can explain contemporary context. None of those sources, by itself, proves every detail of a specific car.
Common misconceptions
“It is just a Mustang with badges”
That understates the GT500. The 428 big-block and Shelby-developed fiberglass treatment are substantive mechanical and body changes. The car remained Mustang-based, but its engineering intent and specification were different.

“Every GT500 had a 427”
That reverses the evidence. The 428 is the standard defining engine, while 427-equipped 1967 cars are rare exceptions.
“The Ford horsepower number is a dyno result”
Ford’s 355-horsepower figure comes from its 2013 retrospective timeline. It is a published historical rating, not a newly reported 1967 test measurement.
“A 1967 description automatically covers 1968”
The model-year range makes that unsafe. The available authoritative material is strongest on the 1967 introduction, so 1968 claims should be tied to year-specific documentation.
Why the distinction still matters
For historians, the difference defines what the Shelby GT500 was: a Mustang enlarged enough to receive a big-block, then developed into a more specialized Shelby performance car. For restorers, it identifies which parts and drivetrain claims deserve scrutiny. For buyers, it prevents two opposite errors—paying Shelby-level money for an ordinary Mustang with cosmetic additions, or dismissing a genuine GT500 as merely a rebadged Ford.
The most defensible description is therefore specific: a 1967 Shelby GT500 is a Shelby-developed Mustang variant whose normal defining engine was a 428-cubic-inch big-block rated by Ford at 355 horsepower in its 2013 timeline, with Shelby-specific fiberglass and styling. Rare 427-equipped 1967 cars exist as exceptions. A 1968 car belongs to the same GT500 story, but its exact equipment and engine details should be verified at the individual-vehicle level rather than assumed from the 1967 launch specification.
