They are related through BMW’s S70 V12 development program. BMW M identifies the McLaren F1 engine as the 6,064-cm³ S70/2 and labels the one-off E31 BMW M8 prototype’s engine S70/2 as well. BMW describes the M8 unit as derived specifically from the S70. That makes the cars members of the same BMW V12 engineering lineage, not proof that every component, calibration or installation detail was identical.
The published figures show why “the same engine” is useful shorthand but an incomplete answer. BMW lists 627 hp and 651 Nm for the 1993 McLaren F1 application, while the M8 prototype is listed at 640 hp and 650 Nm. The M8 was a single front-engine prototype that never entered series production; the F1 used its BMW V12 in a production supercar and in the race car that won Le Mans in 1995.

The short answer: a shared S70/2 lineage
BMW M’s own engine-history material names the McLaren F1’s 1993 V12 as S70/2. BMW’s technical table for the E31 M8 prototype also gives the engine designation as S70/2, with the same 6,064-cm³ displacement. Separately, the M8 prototype description says its power unit was “derived specifically from the S70 engine.” Taken together, those statements establish a direct BMW development connection between the two applications.
That connection is more precise than saying BMW simply took the regular 8 Series engine and put it in a McLaren. BMW says the lower-powered M70 used in the production 8 Series shared only cylinder spacing with S70/2 and that every part was constructed anew. The F1 V12 was therefore a purpose-built high-performance engine family, not an ordinary M70 with minor tuning changes.

At the same time, BMW’s published material does not provide a part-by-part comparison proving that the M8 prototype and McLaren F1 engines were mechanically identical. The defensible conclusion is that they share the S70/2 designation and BMW engineering lineage, while their installations and stated calibrations differed.
What BMW lists for each application
BMW’s figures show matching displacement but different published output and torque values. The numbers below are the values BMW gives for each specific application; they should not be treated as a claim that one car’s engine was a dyno-verified copy of the other.
| Item | BMW M8 E31 prototype | McLaren F1 |
|---|---|---|
| Engine designation | S70/2 | S70/2 |
| Displacement | 6,064 cm³ | 6,064 cm³ |
| Maximum power | Up to 640 hp; technical table lists 640 hp at 7,500 rpm | 627 hp at 7,500 rpm |
| Maximum torque | 650 Nm at 5,600 rpm | 651 Nm |
| Vehicle context | Front-engine E31 prototype | Production supercar application; related race use |
| Production status | One unit; no series production | Engine supplied for the McLaren F1 program |
The 13-hp difference is not a contradiction. Engines with the same designation and displacement can receive different intake, exhaust, electronic, emissions, cooling and calibration choices. BMW’s sources provide the output figures but do not specify every change that accounts for the difference, so it is safer to report the values as application-specific ratings.
How the S70 program fits into the story
BMW’s high-performance V12 work
The S70 designation represents BMW’s motorsport-oriented V12 development rather than the mass-production M70 used in the 750i and 850i. BMW M describes S70/2 as a 6,064-cm³ engine built for exceptional performance. Its listed F1 specification is 627 hp at 7,500 rpm and 651 Nm of torque, figures that made the engine notable for both output and tractability.

BMW’s historical account credits engineer Paul Rosche with designing and building the engine. BMW Group also says Rosche created the F1 with McLaren director Gordon Murray. McLaren dates the F1’s conception to 1988 and its realization to 1992, placing the collaboration in a period when the engine program was being developed for a clean-sheet supercar rather than adapted from an existing BMW road car.
Why the M8 prototype mattered
The E31 M8 was BMW’s experimental answer to what a flagship 8 Series could become. BMW M says its power unit was derived specifically from the S70 and highlights a carbon-fibre intake system and roller valves. The technical table identifies the prototype engine as S70/2 and gives a potential maximum output of up to 640 hp.
Because BMW built only one M8 prototype and never put it into series production, its specification remained an engineering demonstrator. The car’s front-engine layout also required a different vehicle-level solution from the F1’s mid-engine installation. Even with a shared engine designation, packaging changes the intake routing, exhaust layout, cooling paths, ancillary placement, service access and calibration priorities.
What “same engine” gets right—and what it gets wrong
The part that is right
- BMW M lists S70/2 for both the M8 prototype and the McLaren F1 application.
- Both are documented at 6,064 cm³ displacement.
- BMW explicitly describes the M8 unit as derived from the S70 engine.
- The work belongs to the same BMW high-performance V12 engineering lineage associated with Paul Rosche.
The part that needs qualification
- The published ratings differ: 640 hp for the M8 prototype versus 627 hp for the F1, both at 7,500 rpm in BMW’s tables.
- Torque is listed as 650 Nm at 5,600 rpm for the M8 and 651 Nm for the F1.
- The M8 was front-engine and experimental; the F1 was designed around a mid-engine supercar package and also supplied the basis for competition use.
- BMW does not publish a complete component interchange or build-sheet comparison for the two engines in the cited material.
Accordingly, “the M8 and F1 used the same BMW S70/2 V12 family” is accurate. “Every part was identical” is not established. “The F1 engine was just the 8 Series M70” is specifically misleading, because BMW says the S70/2 and M70 shared only cylinder spacing and that every part of the S70/2 was constructed anew.

Hardware and engineering details BMW does identify
M8 prototype features
BMW M calls out a carbon-fibre intake system and roller valves on the M8 prototype. Those details signal an engine designed to reduce restrictions and support high-rpm breathing, rather than a lightly modified luxury-car V12. BMW’s wording describes the unit as combining smooth running with substantial performance potential, a useful reminder that the M8 program sought both refinement and extreme output.
McLaren F1 features
BMW M’s description of the McLaren F1 engine identifies individual throttle valves, adjustable inlet timing and dry-sump lubrication. Individual throttles give each cylinder bank or cylinder precise air control and sharp response; adjustable inlet timing broadens the useful operating range; and a dry-sump system helps maintain oil supply under the high cornering loads expected of a mid-engine supercar and race-derived applications.
Those features explain why the F1 engine should not be described as a conventional 8 Series V12. They also illustrate why a common core designation does not guarantee identical external hardware. Intake systems, oil tanks, exhausts, accessories and control strategies must match the vehicle around them.

BMW’s sources do not identify one single reason for the 13-hp spread, and it would be speculative to assign it to a particular camshaft, compression ratio or software map. Several normal engineering variables can change a published rating without changing the engine’s basic identity:

McLaren’s timeline
McLaren dates the F1’s conception to 1988 and its realization to 1992. The project’s engine therefore emerged from a dedicated collaboration rather than from a late decision to borrow a showroom motor. BMW Group’s account connects Rosche and Gordon Murray with creating the F1 and notes that the six-litre BMW V12 powered McLaren to victory at Le Mans in 1995.
The M8’s limited status
The E31 M8 never became a production model. BMW’s technical table records one prototype and no series production. That status is essential when comparing the cars: the M8 demonstrates what BMW’s engineering team was exploring in an E31 chassis, whereas the F1 represents the engine’s better-known production-supercar application and its subsequent competition success.

Calling the M8 “the car that used the F1 engine” reverses the documented relationship. BMW describes the M8 engine as S70-derived and labels it S70/2, while BMW’s history page separately identifies S70/2 as the F1 engine. The sources support a shared development path and designation; they do not establish that one finished engine was removed from one car and installed in the other.

How to describe the relationship accurately
For a concise explanation, use this formulation: The one-off BMW M8 E31 prototype and the McLaren F1 were connected by BMW’s S70/2 V12 program. Both are listed as 6,064-cm³ S70/2 engines, but BMW gives different application ratings—640 hp for the M8 prototype and 627 hp for the F1—and does not document every component as identical.
This wording preserves all the important distinctions:
- It identifies BMW, not McLaren alone, as the source of the engine lineage.
- It names the S70/2 designation used in BMW’s technical material.
- It acknowledges the shared displacement.
- It keeps the separate output and torque figures attached to the correct car.
- It distinguishes a one-off prototype from the F1’s production and racing program.
- It avoids the unsupported claim that every internal and external part was the same.
Common misconceptions
“It was the normal 850i engine.”
No. BMW says the lower-powered M70 and S70/2 shared only cylinder spacing, with every S70/2 part constructed anew. The S70/2 was a separate high-performance design, even though both engines were BMW V12s.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“The M8 and F1 ratings must be a mistake because the designation matches.”
No. A designation identifies an engine version or development family; it does not require every vehicle installation to have the same calibration or published rating. BMW itself lists 640 hp for the M8 prototype and 627 hp for the F1.
“The prototype proves BMW planned to sell an M8 with the F1 engine.”
The prototype proves BMW built and evaluated an S70/2-powered E31. BMW’s table records one unit and no series production, so it does not support a claim that a production M8 was approved, priced or scheduled.
Bottom line
The BMW M8’s V12 was related to the McLaren F1’s because both sit within BMW’s S70/2 development lineage. BMW identifies the F1 engine as S70/2 and labels the M8 prototype engine S70/2 after describing it as derived from the S70. Their 6,064-cm³ displacement matches, but BMW lists 640 hp and 650 Nm for the M8 prototype versus 627 hp and 651 Nm for the F1. The M8 was a single front-engine prototype; the F1 was the production supercar application whose BMW V12 later powered McLaren’s 1995 Le Mans victory. That is a direct engineering relationship, not evidence that the two finished engines were identical in every part or tune.
