What LFP Batteries Are—and Why Truck Makers Are Considering Them

LFP lithium-ion batteries can reduce cost and support long service life, but their lower energy density than NMC affects range, payload and packaging. Here is how truck makers are weighing the trade-off.

LFP batteries are lithium-ion batteries whose cathode uses lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). Truck manufacturers are considering them because they generally cost less, can offer long service life and many charging cycles, and have thermal characteristics that manufacturers value. The compromise is lower energy density than nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry, which can make long range, payload, battery mass and packaging harder to optimize.

There is no universally “best” battery chemistry for an electric truck. A regional delivery truck, a vocational rigid truck and a long-haul tractor have different energy and payload requirements, so the appropriate choice depends on the vehicle’s duty cycle.

What are LFP batteries?

LFP stands for lithium iron phosphate, also called lithium ferro phosphate. It is a lithium-ion battery chemistry: lithium ions move between the cathode and anode during charging and discharging, while the cathode material is lithium iron phosphate rather than the nickel-manganese-cobalt compounds used in NMC cells.

The chemistry is already used in commercial vehicles. DAF says its electric trucks use LFP batteries, and Mercedes-Benz Trucks identifies LFP cell technology in the eActros 600. Those examples show that LFP is a production option for heavy vehicles, not merely a laboratory concept. They do not mean every electric truck from either manufacturer uses LFP.

What the chemistry changes

The cathode material affects several engineering decisions at once: how much energy a pack stores for its mass and volume, how much it costs, how it behaves under heat, and how long it can remain useful through repeated charging. Battery-pack design, cooling, software, vehicle weight and operating conditions still matter, so chemistry alone does not determine a truck’s range or durability.

Why are truck makers considering LFP?

Lower battery cost

Cost is the most immediate reason. Ford has described LFP as the lowest-cost automotive battery technology currently available. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that LFP packs averaged more than 40% less per kilowatt-hour than NMC packs in 2025. That is a global battery-pack comparison, not a truck-only price list: the IEA cautioned that stationary-storage applications, which predominantly use LFP, influence the average.

For a truck, a lower-cost pack can reduce the purchase price, protect a manufacturer’s margin, or allow more capacity within a target vehicle price. It can also make electrification more practical in applications where the truck does not need the highest possible energy per kilogram. The actual saving on a particular truck depends on pack size, contracts, production volume, cooling hardware and the rest of the vehicle.

Long service life and repeated charging

Truck fleets can accumulate high mileage and frequent charging. DAF cites lifespan and the number of charging cycles among LFP’s advantages, while Daimler describes LFP as having a long service life. These are manufacturer characterizations, not a guarantee that every LFP pack will reach the same mileage or cycle count. Temperature, charging power, state-of-charge limits, payload and maintenance all influence useful life.

Thermal characteristics

DAF highlights thermal safety alongside lifespan and cycle count. LFP’s thermal behavior is attractive to manufacturers designing large commercial packs, where cooling, protection and failure containment are central engineering tasks. “The electric DAF trucks use LFP batteries (Lithium Ferro Phosphate) with a high energy density that are very advantageous in terms of thermal safety, lifespan and the number of charging cycles,” the company said on August 21, 2024. The safety and durability statements in that sentence are DAF’s claims; they should not be treated as an independent, universal comparison of every LFP and NMC pack.

Supply-chain and manufacturing strategy

LFP avoids nickel and cobalt in the cathode. That can help manufacturers manage material cost and sourcing exposure, although cell prices and supply chains change. Ford’s June 2025 update said LFP production equipment was making C-sample cells at an equipment supplier’s location. Ford’s 2024 strategy said its Michigan project was on track to begin production in 2026. Those statements describe dated development plans and progress, not proof that the facility was operating at commercial scale.

LFP vs. NMC for electric trucks

NMC remains attractive when a truck needs maximum energy from a constrained battery envelope. LFP is often attractive when cost, frequent cycling and service life carry more weight. The following comparison uses the distinctions established by the IEA, manufacturers and a 2024 industry report; it is not a universal specification sheet for every truck.

Decision factor LFP NMC What it means for a truck
Pack cost IEA reported more than 40% lower average cost per kWh in 2025, with stationary storage affecting the comparison. Higher average cost per kWh than LFP in that IEA comparison. LFP may reduce the cost of a large pack, but the truck-specific saving is not established by the market average.
Energy density Lower than NMC in the cited industry comparison. Higher than LFP in that comparison. NMC can provide more stored energy for a given mass or volume; LFP may require more cells or space for the same target capacity.
Service life and cycles Manufacturers cite long life and many charging cycles. Service life depends on the cell, pack controls and use; no universal value is established here. High-utilization fleets should evaluate the warranty, expected duty cycle and replacement policy rather than chemistry alone.
Thermal behavior DAF cites thermal safety as an advantage. Specific truck-to-truck thermal results are not stated. Cooling and protection design still determine the behavior of the complete pack.
Best-fit duty cycle Potentially compelling where cost and repeated charging matter more than maximum range per kilogram. Potentially compelling where long range and tight mass or packaging limits dominate. Route length, payload, charging access and daily utilization decide the trade-off.

Do not convert the energy-density difference into a fixed percentage range penalty. Pack architecture, usable state-of-charge window, aerodynamics, terrain, weather, payload and charging strategy can change the result. The available evidence does not establish an apples-to-apples range comparison between otherwise identical LFP and NMC trucks.

Are LFP batteries suitable for long-haul trucks?

They can be, but suitability depends on the route and the truck’s design. Long-haul work increases the value of energy density because every additional kilogram of battery can affect payload and because charging opportunities may be limited. That is the central argument for NMC in some long-distance applications.

However, LFP is not limited to short urban routes. Mercedes-Benz Trucks uses LFP cell technology in the eActros 600, a heavy-duty model designed for long-distance haulage. This demonstrates that a manufacturer can engineer an LFP truck for demanding routes; it does not prove that LFP is the best choice for every long-haul operation or that the model’s results transfer to another truck.

Questions a fleet should answer

  • How many kilometres does the truck cover between scheduled charging opportunities?
  • What payload must be carried after accounting for the complete battery and cooling system?
  • Can the depot or route provide the required charging power during legally permitted rest periods?
  • How much range reserve is needed for weather, traffic, terrain and detours?
  • Will the truck be charged frequently enough for cycle life to matter more than maximum energy density?

What truck makers are doing now

DAF in Europe

DAF’s 2024 announcement described new-generation electric trucks with LFP batteries and up to 500 kilometres of zero-emission range. That is a manufacturer figure for the described vehicle range, not an LFP-only test result. In January 2026, DAF expanded its electric program across rigid and tractor models and said it was using its newest-generation liquid-cooled LFP batteries. DAF also stated an eight-year warranty for those batteries. Warranty coverage is a manufacturer term for the specified products and should not be generalized to every LFP truck.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ eActros 600

Daimler identifies LFP cell technology as a feature of the eActros 600 and describes the chemistry as known for long service life. Because the eActros 600 is aimed at heavy-duty long-distance haulage, it is a useful example of LFP being considered beyond urban distribution. The evidence is model-specific; it does not establish the chemistry used across the manufacturer’s entire electric-truck range.

Ford’s North American production effort

Ford’s June 2025 update reported C-sample LFP cells being produced on equipment at a supplier location. Its 2024 strategy said Michigan production was on track to begin in 2026. These milestones indicate an effort to build domestic LFP capacity in the United States, but they are plans and progress reports from the stated dates. Production status, volume and the trucks that might use those cells require confirmation from later company updates.

General Motors’ cost and chemistry plans

General Motors said in April 2025 that using low-cost LFP chemistry could cut $6,000 from the battery pack of a Chevrolet Silverado EV. That is a company estimate for a planned application, not a demonstrated saving on a currently sold truck. In May 2025, GM announced work with LG Energy Solution on lithium manganese-rich (LMR) cells for future trucks and SUVs, claiming 33% higher energy density than its best-performing LFP-based cells at comparable cost. LMR is a different chemistry, and the figure describes a prospective company comparison rather than an independent production result.

How widespread is LFP in electric trucking?

The IEA reported that electric trucks accounted for about 8% of global electric-vehicle battery deployment in 2025, up from less than 5% in 2024. Those are shares of global EV battery deployment, not the percentage of trucks using LFP. The figures do show why truck-cell choices matter: as commercial vehicles take a larger share of battery demand, pack cost, durability and energy density become fleet-level issues.

A 2024 industry report recorded differing manufacturer views about using LFP for long-haul work. That disagreement is important. It means the market is not converging on one chemistry; companies are weighing range, payload, charging infrastructure, cost and expected utilization differently.

What LFP means for operators

Vehicle economics

A lower-cost pack can improve the purchase case, but fleets should calculate total cost of ownership. Include electricity, demand charges, charger installation, maintenance, financing, payload revenue, downtime and the residual value of the truck. A cheaper battery does not automatically produce a cheaper operation if the vehicle needs extra capacity, more charging time or route changes.

Payload and packaging

Because LFP has lower energy density than NMC in the cited comparison, a truck targeting the same usable energy may need a larger or heavier pack. Engineers can respond with more cells, a different underbody layout or a different range target. The resulting payload and body-builder options are vehicle-specific and cannot be inferred from chemistry alone.

Charging strategy

Frequent opportunity charging can make an LFP truck practical even when its maximum range is lower than an NMC alternative. Depot schedules, charging power, battery temperature management and the usable state-of-charge window determine whether the truck can complete its work without disruptive stops. Operators should request route simulations using their own loads and weather conditions rather than relying on a headline range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warranty and support

Read the battery warranty for duration, mileage, retained-capacity threshold, exclusions and approved charging practices. DAF’s eight-year statement illustrates how a manufacturer may present coverage, but another truck can have different terms. Also confirm who handles high-voltage diagnostics, what happens after a module fault and whether replacement parts are available in the operating region.

Limitations buyers should keep in mind

  • There is no universal range, weight or cost penalty that applies to every LFP truck.
  • The IEA’s more-than-40% cost difference is an average influenced by stationary storage, not a clean comparison of truck packs.
  • Manufacturer statements about safety, lifespan, range and savings are claims about specified products or plans, not independent fleet tests.
  • No matched test covering identical trucks, loads, routes, weather and charging conditions establishes a general LFP-versus-NMC winner.
  • A battery’s real-world performance also depends on cooling, software, charging hardware, aerodynamics, payload and maintenance.

How to choose between LFP and NMC for a truck

  1. Map the duty cycle. Record daily kilometres, dwell times, payload, gradients, temperatures and the percentage of days requiring the full route range.
  2. Set the usable-energy requirement. Include a realistic reserve for traffic, weather, degradation and diversions rather than designing to a laboratory maximum.
  3. Check charging feasibility. Match the required energy and charging power to depot capacity, grid limits, rest periods and route infrastructure.
  4. Compare payload and body configurations. Ask for curb weight, usable battery capacity and axle loads for the exact specification, not generic chemistry figures.
  5. Model total cost. Include purchase price, electricity, infrastructure, maintenance, financing, downtime and expected battery warranty coverage.
  6. Validate support. Confirm technician training, roadside assistance, high-voltage repair capability and end-of-life battery handling in every operating region.

LFP is attractive because it can lower pack cost while offering characteristics manufacturers associate with long life, repeated cycling and thermal safety. NMC can remain advantageous when energy density and long-range packaging are the dominant constraints. The right decision is therefore a route-and-vehicle calculation, not a blanket verdict about one chemistry.
