After taking pole for the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint, Lewis Hamilton asked Ferrari race engineer Riccardo Adami, “In che posizione siamo?” (“What position are we in?”). Sky Sport Italia’s clip description says Adami replied, “San Diego,” and Hamilton laughed: “P1, ma davvero?” (“P1, really?”). The available page text does not provide a full written transcript, so these verified excerpts—not a reconstructed transcript—are the reliable wording.

Why it was a surprising message
Hamilton had just taken Sprint Qualifying pole in Shanghai. Formula 1’s report describes him responding with “Really?” and laughter when told of the result. In his separate post-session remarks, he said, “I didn’t expect that result but I’m so, so happy and so proud.” That was a media comment after the session, not part of the radio exchange. Hamilton’s later comments about Ferrari
In the FIA post-Sprint press conference, Hamilton said he had found his first race with Ferrari, in Melbourne, difficult, but felt more comfortable in the car in Shanghai. He credited the engineers and mechanics for fine-tuning the car, while cautioning that the Sprint was a stepping stone and the team should not get ahead of itself. These comments came later in the press conference; they are not part of the radio clip. Read the FIA post-Sprint press-conference transcript.
