It is a vent path—not an electrical wire or fuel line—and it must be connected and routed as specified for your BMW and battery.
What the BMW battery vent tube does
A battery vent opening lets gas escape from the battery. The tube provides a route for that gas toward the vehicle’s exterior rather than leaving it to collect in the battery compartment. BMW’s service procedure warns of an injury and explosion hazard if the vent opening is assigned incorrectly or the hose is routed improperly. That warning concerns correct installation; it does not mean a properly installed battery is likely to explode.
How the hose and battery openings work
The arrangement varies by vehicle and battery. In the procedure for the 2022 BMW 540i xDrive, the battery has ventilation openings on opposite sides: BMW directs technicians to close one opening with a dummy plug and connect the vent hose to the other. The procedure says, “The vent hose (3) must be correctly connected and routed at the other ventilation opening (2).” Read the BMW 540i xDrive battery procedure.
That is a model-specific example, not a universal diagram for every BMW. Do not assume that every battery has the same number or position of ports, or block both openings. Follow the instructions for the particular vehicle and replacement battery.

Why the vent tube’s routing matters
BMW’s 2022 540i xDrive procedure calls for the hose to slope toward the outside and warns against forming a siphon. A hose that is disconnected, damaged, incorrectly routed, or attached to the wrong opening may not provide the intended vent path. Do not treat a loose or missing tube as harmless.
What to check when replacing a BMW battery
- Confirm the replacement battery is specified for your BMW and has the vent port arrangement the vehicle requires.
- Check whether the battery or service parts include the correct plug or elbow, and whether the hose connector fits.
- Confirm hose length and connector shape for the application. BMW documented a specific case in its August 2013 bulletin for certain 2009–2012 F01/F02 vehicles moving from a 90 Ah AGM battery to a 105 Ah AGM battery: a longer hose might be needed, with hose part number 61 21 1 377 745 listed if required. That part number is not established as a fit for other BMWs. See BMW North America bulletin SI B61 03 13.
- Verify that the installed hose reaches the exterior outlet and can follow the vehicle-specific route, including any specified slope.
BMW has also treated the tube itself as a replaceable service part: a March 29, 2022 delivery-stop bulletin called for replacement of the 12-volt battery vent tube on three specified 2022 X5 vehicles produced March 23, 2022. This narrowly defined action is not evidence of a general X5 or BMW defect. See BMW North America bulletin SI 61 05 22.

If the tube is missing, damaged, or will not fit
Use the vehicle-specific repair procedure or ask a qualified shop to verify the battery, port, plug, hose, and routing. For a replacement hose, confirm fitment using the BMW’s model, year, battery and preferably VIN. The 2013 bulletin’s part number applies only to its stated vehicle and battery-replacement example; it does not identify a universal BMW vent hose.
