It combines an evolution of Horse’s HR12 engine with hybrid-system changes and Repsol renewable gasoline. The companies report a peak brake thermal efficiency of 44.2% and fuel consumption below 3.3 L/100 km under WLTP, but the H12 Concept is a technology demonstrator—not a confirmed production engine for sale to consumers.
What the H12 Concept is—and what it is not
Horse Powertrain and Repsol describe the H12 Concept as an evolution of the HR12 engine. Their February 2026 announcement said two prototypes had validated performance. Repsol’s update of 11 August 2026 said the first prototype vehicle had been presented at its Technology Lab. These are prototype milestones; the announcements do not establish mass production, a retail launch, or a vehicle a consumer can buy.
The concept pairs a hybrid powertrain with Nexa gasoline of 100% renewable origin. That makes it important to distinguish two parts of its pitch: the vehicle’s reported efficiency and the renewable origin of its fuel. Neither, on its own, establishes the full lifecycle emissions of a vehicle.
What changes from the HR12
The partners describe a package of engine and hybrid-system updates, rather than a single efficiency device.

Combustion and air-management changes
- 17:1 compression ratio: the joint release identifies this as part of the H12 Concept’s evolution from the HR12.
- Revised combustion system and high-energy ignition: both are listed among the changes intended to improve how the engine operates.
- New-generation exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and an optimized turbocharger: the partners identify these as further changes to the engine’s air and exhaust systems.
Hybrid-system and friction changes
- Improved hybrid gearbox and energy management: the announcement includes updates to how the engine and hybrid system work together.
- Reduced internal friction: Horse Powertrain and Repsol attribute this improvement to the use of Repsol lubricants.
The announcement names these design areas but does not provide a component-by-component breakdown of their individual contributions to the reported consumption figure.
What the reported efficiency figures mean
Horse Powertrain and Repsol reported the following figures in 2026. They are company-reported results; the consumption figure is identified as a WLTP result.

The figures describe different things: peak brake thermal efficiency is an engine measure, while L/100 km is a vehicle consumption measure. The 40% statement adds a specific historical comparison group—the average for new European passenger cars registered in 2023—so it should not be read as a universal comparison with today’s cars or with a particular model.
What “renewable gasoline” means in this project
Repsol says the project uses Nexa gasoline made from 100% renewable-origin feedstocks eligible under the EU Renewable Energy Directive. The description concerns the fuel’s origin and its accounting eligibility; it does not mean the car has zero tailpipe emissions.

Repsol also says Nexa 95 renewable gasoline can be used in conventional gasoline vehicles without engine modifications. Its February 2026 announcement reported availability at 30 service stations in Spain. That is a dated, geographically limited availability statement, not a current station count or evidence that the fuel is available elsewhere.
How to read Repsol’s annual CO₂ estimate
Repsol estimated 1.77 tonnes less CO₂ per year for a mid-sized vehicle equipped with the H12 and using 100% renewable Nexa gasoline, assuming 12,500 km of travel annually. The estimate uses Repsol’s stated conventional-vehicle-and-fuel comparison and a greenhouse-gas savings methodology that it says is based on the Renewable Energy Directive.

This is a scenario-based estimate, not a measured result for every driver or vehicle and not an independent full lifecycle comparison. Its value depends on the stated vehicle, annual distance, fuel, and comparison basis. It should not be used by itself to rank the H12 against battery-electric vehicles: the cited figures do not establish a full lifecycle comparison with them.

No confirmed retail or mass-production availability is established by the cited announcements. Horse Powertrain’s 2026 portfolio brochure lists the H12 family as a 1.2-liter gasoline/LPG system with a 60–110 kW range, but those are family-level portfolio specifications—not a confirmed specification sheet for the H12 Concept demonstrator. They should not be treated as final specs for a production H12 hybrid.

For now, the H12 is best understood as a prototype-stage demonstration of how an efficient combustion engine, hybrid hardware, and renewable-origin gasoline might be combined. Its reported results are informative, but production status, consumer availability, and the demonstrator’s final specifications remain unconfirmed in the cited material.
